Chapter

Jace didnโ€™t continue, but I already knew. โ€œShe wants to be your wife, right?โ€

Jaceโ€™s head shot up, surprise all over his face like Iโ€™d cracked some big secret.

โ€œYou know her pretty well,โ€ he said after a beat, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

The jab wasnโ€™t subtle. He was implying Iโ€™d been keeping tabs on Tanyaโ€”because, yeah, sheโ€™d stolen Jace from me. Classic.

โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it,โ€ I shot back, keeping my cool. โ€œI donโ€™t care about her. But sheโ€™s so obvious. Her obsession with money and fancy things? Kinda hard to miss.โ€

Right as I finished, the sky started to change. I used to think night slowly turned into day, but it was like someone flicked a switch. The sky justโ€ฆ lit up, fast and sharp. No wonder they call it the breaking of dawn.

โ€œJace, an amusement parkโ€™s worth a lot, sure. But compared to being the CEOโ€™s wife? Itโ€™s pocket change.โ€ I watched his expressionโ€”he blinked, clearly not expecting me to go there.

Yeah, the Johnstons gave me a whole amusement park, but Jaceโ€™s net worth? He could buy a hundred of those. Tanya knew that. Thatโ€™s why she didnโ€™t waste any time using Desmondโ€™s death to her advantage. โ€œShe never wanted me,โ€ Jace muttered, his voice bitter. โ€œShe only wanted what Iโ€™m worth.โ€

I laughed softly under my breath. Is he just now getting this? Did he really think Tanya was with him for love?

In rich-people-land, how many couples are actually in love? Most are just business deals wrapped in wedding dresses.

Suddenly, Sasha popped into my head. That girl was all over Thorsten, a guy old enough to be her dad. Was that love? Maybe. Or maybe she was just in love with his bank account.

โ€œBut why donโ€™t you care?โ€ Jace asked quietly. โ€œIf you cared about money, you wouldnโ€™t haveโ€ฆ left because of her, right?โ€

He wasnโ€™t wrong. If I was after wealth, I couldโ€™ve ignored Tanya. Weโ€™d fight, sure, but Iโ€™d wait until we got married. Then, when we split? Iโ€™d walk away with half his empire.

Even Lena thought I was dumb for letting Jace off so easy. Sheโ€™d told me if he cheated, I shouldโ€™ve made him pay for it.

โ€œMaybe I am dumb,โ€ I said with a small, self-deprecating smile, echoing Lenaโ€™s words.

โ€œKeira,โ€ Jace said, using my name in a way that caught me off guard. โ€œDid you ever really love me?โ€

I let out a low laugh, thinking, โ€˜After everything, now he asks if I loved him?โ€™

I looked at him, my voice cold. โ€œYouโ€™re like someone who doesnโ€™t just want to hurt someoneโ€”they want to twist the knife afterward.โ€

Chapter 424

Jace tilted his head back, staring at the now-bright sky. โ€œIโ€™ve been thinkingโ€ฆ if you really loved me, how could you just leave? How could you be with someone else so fast? I canโ€™t even imagine it, butโ€ฆโ€

He trailed off, his voice breaking. โ€œThe longer weโ€™re apart, the more I realizeโ€ฆ. I canโ€™t live without you.โ€ Ah, the aftermath.

I saw the pain on his face, the sadness clinging to him like a shadow. And in that moment, something inside me finally clicked.

I realized I wasnโ€™t the only one who had loved. He had too, in his own messed-up way. We just went down the wrong road. Much like this conversation, which started about Tanya but somehow circled back to us.

Since we were already here, I figured Iโ€™d clear things up for him.

โ€œEver hear the saying?โ€ I asked, bending down to pick up a fallen leaf. I spun it between my fingers. โ€œA leaf doesnโ€™t turn yellow in a day; people donโ€™t just wake up one day and stop caring.โ€
