Chapter 420 +25 BONUS

I knew exactly what I had asked Steve to look into, but this wasnโ€™t the time Iโ€™d imagined getting an update. My head was spinning with everything that had just happened, but now this unease crept in, making my eyelid twitch.

โ€œWhat did you find?โ€ I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

โ€œThe info you had wasnโ€™t the full story. Thereโ€™s a final conclusion you missed,โ€ Steve replied, sounding just as confused as I felt.

I took a slow breath. โ€œWere you able to find it?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Steve said, and suddenly his tone grew more serious. โ€œThe officer who handled the case died shortly after your dadโ€™s accident.โ€

A cold shiver ran through me. โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œOne month after the investigation was closed.โ€

For a second, I couldnโ€™t even breathe. Steveโ€™s voice cut through the panic buzzing in my head. โ€œReaโ€ฆ you there?โ€

I jumped in, my mind racing. โ€œDo you think his death was connected to how my dadโ€™s accident was ruled?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve thought about that,โ€ Steve admitted. โ€œBut officially, itโ€™s listed as sudden cardiac arrest. Thereโ€™s a hospital report and everything.โ€

His words left me hollow, like the air had been sucked out of the room.

โ€œI tried talking to his family, but they didnโ€™t know anything that would help,โ€ Steve added, and the chill in my bones deepened.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ thereโ€™s nothing left, right?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThatโ€™s what it looks like,โ€ Steve said, sounding defeated. โ€œUnless the officer left something behind, but his family doesnโ€™t know of anything. And with his sudden death, the trailโ€™s gone cold.โ€

It was starting to feel like the truth about my dadโ€™s accident was buried too deepโ€”too many years had passed, and anyone who could help was either gone or didnโ€™t want to stir up the past.

โ€œWhat about his colleagues? Friends? Did you check with them?โ€ I pushed, not ready to give up.

โ€œWe did,โ€ Steve replied, but there was a finality in his voice that told me not to expect much more.

I closed my eyes, feeling like a weight was pressing down on me. โ€œSo unless someone comes back from the dead, this is where it ends.โ€

โ€œNot necessarily,โ€ Steve said, trying to sound hopeful, but I could hear the doubt. โ€œIโ€™ll keep reaching out to the officerโ€™s family, see if anything turns up.โ€

I stared out at the dark night, a void that reminded me too much of the night my parents never came home. โ€œNo need, Steve. If they knew something, theyโ€™d have said it by now.โ€

Whoever wanted the truth hidden did a good job. After ten years, those secrets were buried deep. And anyone who could tell me what really happened was either long gone or would stay silent.

โ€œSometimes,โ€ Steve said gently, โ€œitโ€™s best to let the past stay where it is.โ€

I could tell he didnโ€™t believe in digging any further. He had helped me, but deep down, he didnโ€™t think it was worth pursuing anymore.

โ€œI get it,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œThanks, Steve. I really appreciate everything.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I couldnโ€™t find more,โ€ Steve paused before adding, โ€œOh, and congrats on the other news.โ€

I wasnโ€™t sure if he meant the park opening or Haydenโ€™s proposal, so I just said, โ€œThanks.โ€

Someone called for him in the background, and after a quick goodbye, the call ended.

I sat there, my thoughts spinning, before I typed out a quick message: [Steve, what was the officerโ€™s name?]

His reply came back almost instantly: [Grady Crosby.]

I stared at the name on my screen, lost in thought, when Hayden walked in, fresh from his shower. I quickly put my phone down, and before I knew it, he scooped me up and sat me on his lap. โ€œTired? Want me to carry you to the shower?โ€

โ€œExhausted, but I donโ€™t want to shower,โ€ I murmured, leaning my head against his neck.

โ€œI could wash you,โ€ Hayden teased, a playful edge to his voice.

I shook my head, snuggling into him. โ€œNot right now. Letโ€™s just sit.โ€

โ€œSomething on your mind?โ€ he asked, picking up on my mood like he always did.

I couldnโ€™t shake the feelingโ€”heโ€™d once told me he was looking into the car accident that took his dadโ€™s life. The timing of everything was too close, and before I knew it, I asked, โ€œHayden, howโ€™s your investigation into your dadโ€™s accident going?โ€

His arms tightened around me, his voice dropping. โ€œThey said it was brake failure. But the officer who handled the case died of sudden cardiac arrest not long after. Iโ€™ve talked to his family, his colleagues, but no one knows anything.โ€

His words echoed what Steve had just told me, confirming that Hayden hadnโ€™t hidden anything.
