“Private details are off-limits,” Lena joked, thinking I was teasing her.

But I grew serious. “Have you made it clear to that admirer of yours that you’re not interested?”

“Of course. I turned him down immediately.”

“Well, it doesn’t seem like he got the message. He’s still sending you food and flowers. And…” I hesitated, “…he’s been spying on you.”

Lena’s face changed. I told her about encountering the man outside her office, catching him eavesdropping. Recalling a blind date that almost turned into a stalker situation for me, I felt compelled to warn her. “Lena, you need to be careful. Guys like that can escalate. Watch your back—at work, when you’re leaving, even when you’re driving.”

She didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she stood from her chair and left her office.

“Where are you going? Did you even hear what I said?” I asked, feeling uneasy.

She went straight to the nurses’ station, where a nurse rested her head on the counter. “Can you pull up the security footage from around 8:30 PM tonight? I want to check something near my office door.”

The precise time suggested she was recalling when Nate had confessed to her.

The nurse retrieved the footage, and only then did Lena turn back to me. “The guy you saw might not be my admirer.”

“What?” I was confused.

“I’ve already spoken to his family. He’s not in town—he left yesterday. The gifts I received today? They were ordered online,” she explained, leaving me even more puzzled.

But the man I saw was definitely there, and he seemed startled when I caught him.

The nurse found the footage. “Dr. Lane, is this the person you’re looking for?”

Lena hadn’t seen him, so she angled the screen toward me. “Is this him?”

The footage even showed the moment we bumped into each other, and we watched it replay. Lena spoke up. “This isn’t my admirer. I don’t know him at all.”

“Rewind the footage,” Lena instructed.

As the video rewound, we noticed something important—this man had arrived at the hospital with Nate.

“He’s here for Nate?” I asked, glancing at her.

“That’s what it seems like. But I have no idea why,” Lena said, sounding more thoughtful than worried.

Worst-case scenarios flooded my mind. Even being a doctor could be risky these days. “Do you think it’s some kind of revenge? Maybe Nate’s in trouble?”
