Chapter 312
โWhat is it?โ I asked, still smiling.
Yuna bit her lip, hesitating. โIs my surgery going to cost a lot?โ
My heart sank. Iโd been worried sheโd ask that. โNot at all,โ I said quickly. โItโs really affordable. Plus, Hayden just landed a great job as chief engineer, so weโre good.โ
She didnโt respond, so I slid closer. Sometimes trust isn't about words, just presence. I gently ran my fingers through Yunaโs hair. โThe doctor handling your surgery is my best friendโs friend. Heโs the best. All you need to do is focus on getting better. Youโre going to be fine.โ
Tears welled up in Yunaโs eyes. โKeira, youโre so kind.โ
I smiled. โWell, if I werenโt, Hayden wouldnโt have stuck around.โ
Yuna giggled. โYou and Hayden are like a storybook couple.โ
Thinking of all the romance novels she devoured, I teased, โOnce youโre better, youโll have your own love story.โ
Her face turned red, and I could tell sheโd thought about it. What girl hasnโt? It explained why she kept rereading those romance novels.
While she finished packing, I went to find Hayden. He wasnโt in his room or the yard. Where could he have gone?
Curious, I stepped outside and scanned the area under the moonlight. Off in the distance, down by the riverbank, I spotted him. Even in the dark, I knew it was him. Once someoneโs in your heart, you just know.
I headed toward him. He was so deep in thought he didnโt notice me coming, so I snuck up behind him and wrapped my arms around him in a playful hug.
Hayden tensed for a split second, then softly asked, โWhat are you doing here?โ
I let out a small, teasing huff. โWho am I? Howโd you know it was me? Why didnโt you think it was one of the girls around here whoโs crushing on you?โ I couldnโt help but laugh at the hint of jealousy in my own voice.
โNo one else would have the guts. Andโฆโ He paused, giving me a knowing look, โyour scent is one of a kind.โ
So Iโd slipped into his heart too.
I moved in front of him, looking up into his eyes. โWhat are you doing out here all by yourself? Whatโs on your mind?โ
โJust getting some air,โ he said, staring at the river. But I could see the tension.
I snuggled closer. โYouโre worried about Yuna, arenโt you?โ
He didnโt answer, but I knew. Even with the best doctor, there were no guarantees. Hayden, who faced everything head-on, was terrified of losing her. I understood that fear. It was the kind of loss he couldnโt bear.
Suddenly, a scary thought hit meโif something went wrong, would he blame me? But if she didnโt have the surgery, Yunaโs time was limited. There wasnโt much choice.
โHayden,โ I whispered, resting my head against his chest, โdonโt worry. Yuna will make it through. I know it.โ
He gently rested his hand on my head. โI know. Whatever happens, Iโve made my peace. You donโt have to carry that burden.โ
I froze; heโd sensed my fear.
โItโs going to be okay,โ I whispered.
โYeah,โ Hayden murmured, holding me close as we stood together, wrapped in the quiet of the night.
