Chapter 312

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ I asked, still smiling.

Yuna bit her lip, hesitating. โ€œIs my surgery going to cost a lot?โ€

My heart sank. Iโ€™d been worried sheโ€™d ask that. โ€œNot at all,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œItโ€™s really affordable. Plus, Hayden just landed a great job as chief engineer, so weโ€™re good.โ€

She didnโ€™t respond, so I slid closer. Sometimes trust isn't about words, just presence. I gently ran my fingers through Yunaโ€™s hair. โ€œThe doctor handling your surgery is my best friendโ€™s friend. Heโ€™s the best. All you need to do is focus on getting better. Youโ€™re going to be fine.โ€

Tears welled up in Yunaโ€™s eyes. โ€œKeira, youโ€™re so kind.โ€

I smiled. โ€œWell, if I werenโ€™t, Hayden wouldnโ€™t have stuck around.โ€

Yuna giggled. โ€œYou and Hayden are like a storybook couple.โ€

Thinking of all the romance novels she devoured, I teased, โ€œOnce youโ€™re better, youโ€™ll have your own love story.โ€

Her face turned red, and I could tell sheโ€™d thought about it. What girl hasnโ€™t? It explained why she kept rereading those romance novels.

While she finished packing, I went to find Hayden. He wasnโ€™t in his room or the yard. Where could he have gone?

Curious, I stepped outside and scanned the area under the moonlight. Off in the distance, down by the riverbank, I spotted him. Even in the dark, I knew it was him. Once someoneโ€™s in your heart, you just know.

I headed toward him. He was so deep in thought he didnโ€™t notice me coming, so I snuck up behind him and wrapped my arms around him in a playful hug.

Hayden tensed for a split second, then softly asked, โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

I let out a small, teasing huff. โ€œWho am I? Howโ€™d you know it was me? Why didnโ€™t you think it was one of the girls around here whoโ€™s crushing on you?โ€ I couldnโ€™t help but laugh at the hint of jealousy in my own voice.

โ€œNo one else would have the guts. Andโ€ฆโ€ He paused, giving me a knowing look, โ€œyour scent is one of a kind.โ€

So Iโ€™d slipped into his heart too.

I moved in front of him, looking up into his eyes. โ€œWhat are you doing out here all by yourself? Whatโ€™s on your mind?โ€

โ€œJust getting some air,โ€ he said, staring at the river. But I could see the tension.

I snuggled closer. โ€œYouโ€™re worried about Yuna, arenโ€™t you?โ€

He didnโ€™t answer, but I knew. Even with the best doctor, there were no guarantees. Hayden, who faced everything head-on, was terrified of losing her. I understood that fear. It was the kind of loss he couldnโ€™t bear.

Suddenly, a scary thought hit meโ€”if something went wrong, would he blame me? But if she didnโ€™t have the surgery, Yunaโ€™s time was limited. There wasnโ€™t much choice.

โ€œHayden,โ€ I whispered, resting my head against his chest, โ€œdonโ€™t worry. Yuna will make it through. I know it.โ€

He gently rested his hand on my head. โ€œI know. Whatever happens, Iโ€™ve made my peace. You donโ€™t have to carry that burden.โ€

I froze; heโ€™d sensed my fear.

โ€œItโ€™s going to be okay,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Hayden murmured, holding me close as we stood together, wrapped in the quiet of the night.
