Chapter 98
Caselle was just as stunned. She sat frozen in the car with widened eyes, staring blankly at the horrific scene in front of her. Her mind was completely blank for a few dozen seconds.
Donovan was the first to open the car door. He stumbled out with all his strength, dragging his heavy steps toward the crumpled Lamborghini.
The truck driver also got out and immediately called the police and ambulance.
Giselle’s entire body was trembling, and her heart was pounding. Her vision blurred. However, she managed to pull out her phone and call the ambulance even in her daze.
The nearest ambulance arrived at the scene within five minutes. They carefully extracted the unconscious Zachary from the completely mangled driver’s seat.
Her tears streamed down uncontrollably when she saw his blood-covered face and unconscious state. She collapsed to the ground like she had lost all her strength. Her mind spiraled with the worst possible thoughts.
The only sliver of comfort she could find was that they loaded Zachary onto the ambulance instead of covering him with a blue sheet on the roadside. In other words, there was still hope.
Meanwhile, Donovan remained outwardly composed when faced with the brutal tragedy. There was no sign of emotional breakdown. However, he was shattered within. He didn’t say a word and silently followed them into the ambulance.
Once the ambulance pulled away, Giselle pulled herself together. She jumped into Donovan’s car and sped off after them to the hospital.
Zachary was taken to the nearest top-tier hospital for emergency treatment.
Donovan had no choice but to break the devastating news to the Kane family while waiting outside the ICU.
Dorothea, Ethan, and Grace arrived in a parade within half an hour.
Grace’s legs gave out beneath her when they heard the full account of the accident and how serious Zachary’s condition might be. She cried as if her soul had been torn apart and collapsed in a faint from the overwhelming grief.
After all, she had already lost a daughter and could no longer have children; Zachary was her only beloved son. She wouldn’t survive it if anything happened to him. Dorothea also kept wiping her tears and was extremely atrocious. She kept asking Donovan what had happened, but he remained silent.
Time crawled by. Every second was torture for Giselle. Although she wasn’t part of the family, the anguish within her was no less intense than anyone else’s. She had never experienced such crushing psychological torment and never felt such overwhelming guilt in over 30 years of her life.
The doctors spent around four to five hours trying to save Zachary in the ICU. At one point, they even issued a critical condition notice. It was past 5:00 am when the doors to the operating room opened again.
Everyone rushed forward and asked about the condition, “Doctor, how is he?”
The attending doctor removed his mask. His expression was weary and grim. “The patient’s condition is critical. Although we’ve performed an emergency transfusion and tried everything to save him, he has severe internal organ damage and suffered a major head injury. His vital signs are stable for now, but complications could arise at any moment. He needs to be transferred to another hospital immediately.”
Grace’s body crumpled again at his words as tears streamed down her face. She crouched to the floor and sobbed uncontrollably. “How could this happen? Please, heavens, I beg you. Don’t take my son. Take me instead. Please, I’m begging you not to take him…”
“Alright, stop crying!” Ethan’s heart was just as heavy with grief as he reprimanded, “Zach is still fighting. Why are you crying? You’re spreading negativity!”
Although Dorothea was advanced in age and had weathered countless storms in her life, she tried her best to pull herself together and immediately arranged for the hospital transfer before calling Tony.
