Chapter 90
Giselle’s heart sank as she heard his words. The playful mood between them vanished in the blink of an eye.
“It’s nothing,” she feigned indifference and sneered. “I wouldn’t even say I risked my life for you. It was just a small effort for me. Anyway, what matters is that you’re safe now.”
She didn’t want to argue with him, not when he was injured and weak.
The ward’s door suddenly burst open at that moment.
“Don!” Anne rushed in first and hurried to Donovan’s bedside anxiously. She asked worriedly, “How are you? Are you badly hurt? Let me see…”
Ethan, Grace, Dorothea, Renee, and several other friends and relatives rushed in from the doorway before Donovan could respond.
They had just heard about the incident from the company’s senior management before rushing to the hospital immediately. They surrounded the hospital bed and asked about his condition with concern.
Donovan was overwhelmed by everyone’s concern. He grew increasingly irritated and turned toward the other side of the bed. “Alright, I’m not dead. Just leave!” Dorothea’s eyes reddened when she saw him so badly wounded. She couldn’t help but complain, “Have you completely lost your mind? Was it worth risking your life for some insignificant female employee? We could’ve just compensated her family even if something happened. Look at you now… Thank heavens it wasn’t worse…”
Ethan noticed Giselle at the side at that moment. He asked rather politely, “Ms. Holt, are you alright? Were you hurt?”
It turned out that a bystander had recorded the incident and shared the video in the company group chat before forwarding it to the group chat of the senior executives. That was how the Kanes saw the dramatic footage of Giselle throwing herself at the man and holding him back.
Giselle gave a faint and indifferent smile. “I’m fine. What matters is that Mr. Kane is safe.”
Dorothea, who had scolded her harshly that morning, now held back her tongue after learning that she had saved Donovan’s life. Her focus returned to Donovan’s injuries.
Anne burned with jealousy and resentment when she saw Giselle steal the spotlight in front of the Kane family once again.
“Mrs. Kane, Ethan, Grace,” Anne spoke politely to the Kane family in the tone of a future daughter–in–law, “I think Don needs to rest now. Why don’t you all head home first? I’ll stay here to take care of him.”
Renee immediately chimed in, “Yes, let Anne stay. They’re about to get married anyway. Don needs someone close to care for him after what happened. A nurse would never be as attentive.”
Dorothea nodded in agreement and said to Anne, “Alright, then we’ll leave him in your care.”
“Oh, don’t say that,” Renee smiled as she said, “They’re already engaged after all. Don’s injured, and it’s only right that Anne takes the responsibility and looks after him.”
“Yes. Don’t worry, Mrs. Kane,” Anne replied, but her eyes were fixed on Giselle with a cold glare. “I’ll make sure Don recovers in no time, as long as no outsiders interfere.”
After that, she sent the Kane family off. However, Giselle simply stepped out of the ward, walked to a quiet corner of the hallway, and silently lit a cigarette. When Anne returned, she happened to run into Giselle, who had just finished a cigarette and was on her way back to the ward.
