Chapter 763:
Elyse blinked in surprise, then innocently extended her hand to shake Geraldineโs. โSo, youโre Geraldine,โ Elyse said. Geraldine chuckled. โSeems like Iโm well-known. Is it because of my notorious reputation?โ
Elyse thought for a moment before replying, โNot really. Everyone says youโre the dark horse, the one who might just take first place.โ
โYou said it yourselfโโmight,โ not โdefinitelyโ,โ Geraldine laughed, sitting on a nearby bench. โHonestly, I was hoping for a year without any tough competition so I could win without breaking a sweat.โ She shrugged with a sigh. โBut it looks like there are plenty of strong contenders this yearโlike Edwardโฆ and you!โ
Elyse joined Geraldine on the bench and smiled. โDo you see me as a strong competitor too?โ she asked.
Geraldine chuckled. โAbsolutely,โ she exclaimed. โIโve seen all your performances. Youโre an underrated contender. Itโs probably your modest fame that makes people underestimate you.โ
โYouโre giving me too much credit,โ Elyse responded, her smile widening. โDid you come here just to discuss this?โ
โNo, I was out for a walk and happened to see you. I thought Iโd come over and say hi.โ Geraldineโs smile turned confident. โAnd, by the way, Iโm here to challenge you. I intend to beat you in the next competition.โ
โIโll be ready to beat you as well,โ Elyse responded fearlessly.
Geraldine eyed Elyse intently and sneered, โI was curious to see if you had any spine. Thankfully, you do.โ
With that, she stood, brushed snow off her coat, and said, โSee you at the competition.โ
Elyse watched Geraldine stride away, then turned her gaze back to the frozen lake before her, lost in thought. After a long pause, she pulled out her phone and dialed Gavin.
โWhatโs wrong? Do you need something?โ Gavinโs soft voice came through.
Clutching her violin, Elyse could hardly contain her excitement. โGavin, I think itโs wonderful that Iโm learning the violin!โ she exclaimed.
Gavin paused, slightly taken aback. โWhat brought this on all of a sudden?โ he asked.
โIโm just realizing how the violin lets me meet and compete with such incredible people. Itโs truly exhilarating,โ Elyse responded, her voice brimming with emotion.
Gavin, previously preoccupied with documents and visibly stressed, couldnโt help but smile at her enthusiasm. โThen enjoy the competition. Thereโs much more to the violin than just that,โ he advised.
โAbsolutely!โ Elyse agreed eagerly before ending the call.
Gavin set his phone aside, picked up a document, and resumed reading. A frown creased his forehead as he delved back into his work.
Just then, a man wearing a work badge entered the office. He approached Gavinโs desk and asked coldly, โAfter reviewing the documents, do you think we need to investigate Fiona, Geraldine, and Wendy?โ
โI suggest we donโt alert them yet. Letโs monitor them discreetly for a while.โ Gavinโs expression turned somber. โYour report lacks concrete evidence that any of them intentionally sabotaged the other competitorsโ violins.โ
The man paused, absorbing Gavinโs response, and after a moment, responded, โThe semifinals are approaching. Weโll observe for now.โ
โAgreed.โ Gavin nodded, shut the document, and rubbed his temples wearily.
The man lingered, fixing Gavin with a steady look. โI recall Fiona was your junior. Youโre not planning to cover up for her, are you?โ he asked.
