Chapter 658:
Shaun shot a helpless look at Jayden, as if to say, โYour wife has lost her marbles, blaming everyone.โ But Jayden ignored him, walking over to Elyse and gently wrapping a scarf around her neck. โThe wind here is brutal. I donโt want you catching a cold,โ he said with concern. Elyse disregarded him, focusing all her attention on Shaun.
Shaun felt self-conscious under her scrutiny, yet remained steadfast in his belief that accusing others without evidence was unacceptable. Elyse felt a wave of disgust at Shaunโs pathetic demeanor. To her, a man who couldnโt protect his woman was worthless. With a surge of anger, she shoved Jayden away, snapping, โStay away from me.โ Jayden stumbled backward.
Watching Elyse storm toward the cliff, Jayden fumed at Shaun. โWhy am I the one getting blamed for your blunder?โ Shaun, crossing his arms, retorted sarcastically, โAs if you havenโt messed up before.โ A flicker of realization hit Jayden. Yes, he had made mistakes, but they were for Elyseโs sake.
With a resigned sigh, Jayden trailed behind Elyse, keeping a respectful three-meter distance, silently watching her. Elyse stood at the cliffโs edge, peering down, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within her. This place matched the scene from her dream perfectly; it was here, at this very edge, that Tracy had plummeted to her death. Elyse vividly recalled Tracyโs terrified expression from the dreamโit wasnโt the look of someone about to take their own life.
Elyse lingered at the cliff for a long time, feeling the chill seep into her bones. Finally, she turned to leave, but locked eyes with Jaydenโs intense gaze. After a brief moment of silence, she asked, โIf Tracy fell from here, would there be any chance she survived?โ
Jayden, caught off guard, hesitated before shaking his head. There were treacherous whirlpools in these waters; anyone who fell stood little chance against them. His team had been scouring the area for any sign of Tracy but had found nothing. Elyse nodded. โAlright, I get it.โ
Upon returning from Liverton, Elyse was struck with a high fever that lingered for two days before subsiding. Feeling drained and listless, she sat on her bed, too weak even to touch her beloved violin. During her recovery, she often gazed blankly at the instrument.
Driscoll relayed the news to Jayden, who, after some contemplation, decided to allow visitors. That very afternoon, Cody dropped by to see Elyse. Elyse, taken aback by his visit, attempted to rise, but Cody gestured for her to stay put. Seated by her bedside, he studied her face. โYou donโt look so good.โ
Elyse was startled, then managed a smile. โIโm sick, so itโs no surprise I look worn out.โ Cody shook his head. โYour heart seems troubled.โ Elyse froze.
