Chapter 529
Holding Elyse close, Jayden glanced at Dorothy and sighed inwardly. Her mission was over; she deserved peace. Morgan, however, was inconsolable, clinging to Dorothy's hand.
The nurse, caught in a difficult situation, said, "I'm afraid, according to regulations, we can't remain here indefinitely. We need to move her to the morgue. My deepest condolences."
Morgan sobbed, "I'll accompany her."
Jayden gently stopped Elyse. "I'll send a message to Peyton," he said. "He's expecting you in the ward. You should go back there. It's not appropriate for you to go to the morgue."
Elyse nodded, dried her eyes, and headed for the elevator.
Turning to Morgan, Jayden said, "Dorothy helped Elyse discover that Lanny and Glenda aren't her real parents. I'm truly grateful. Please let me help with Dorothy's funeral arrangements."
Morgan, exhausted, looked at Jayden and said weakly, "Thank you, Mr. Owen."
Jayden accompanied Morgan to the morgue and called the funeral home to arrange for Dorothy's prompt removal. In the chilly morgue, surrounded by other bodies, Morgan stood firm despite the cold. She seemed unaffected. Standing by Dorothy, she pleaded, "Thank you for everything. Could I please have some time alone with her before the funeral home arrives? It's been over twenty years since we've been together like this."
Jayden replied heavily, "Okay, I'll go upstairs."
Morgan simply nodded, continued holding Dorothy's hand, and remained silent.
As Jayden left, the echo of Morgan's cries filled the hallway, a stark reminder of his helplessness. Instead of leaving, he went to the security room. Dorothy's assigned bodyguard was waiting.
Jayden reviewed the security footage of Dorothy in the ward before the accident. The bodyguard, with a hint of unease, said, "I was looking after Dorothy when she suddenly woke up wanting a sandwich. She felt uneasy without one and insisted I get it for her." He paused. "So, I left the ward. That's when the accident happened."
Jayden watched the monitor. The footage showed Dorothy waking and expressing her desire for a sandwich. Despite the bodyguard's attempts to keep her in the ward, he'd left to get it. Dorothy sat up in bed, staring blankly, nearly falling asleep several times before snapping back to consciousness. Ten minutes later, she seemed to sense something urgent and rushed out of the ward.
The surveillance footage confirmed she'd hurried to the hospital entrance. The bodyguard sighed. "Mr. Owen, how could she know? How did she sense her daughter was in danger?"
"Perhaps it was destiny," Jayden replied calmly.
The bodyguard's face showed remorse. "I apologize, Mr. Owen. I failed my assignment. I'm ready to face the consequences."
"There's no need," Jayden said, pointing to the screen. "She couldn't have prevented it; her mission was complete, her driving force gone. You're not at fault. Secure this footage and the accident scene video. Now, we need to deal with the murder."
"Yes, Mr. Owen," the bodyguard replied respectfully.
Jayden left and returned to the ward. Peyton was listening attentively to Elyse's account and sighed. "Life is full of surprises. I just hope Ms. Welch doesn't take this too hard."
As Elyse finished, she saw Jayden approaching. Worriedly, she asked, "Where's Morgan?"
"She's with Dorothy," Jayden replied, feeling tired. Rubbing his temples, he said wearily, "The funeral home will arrive in about thirty minutes. It's up to Morgan how she wants to arrange the funeral."
Elyse nodded. "I'll support her decision."
Peyton interjected, concerned, "Do you think Morgan might do something rash?" ... ... ...
