Chapter 550
Odalys retrieved her car, only to find a tall man leaning against it. He held a cigarette, took a drag, lifted his chin, and blew smoke rings.
"Lee!" Odalys exclaimed, recognizing him and hurrying over.
At the sound of her voice, Lee quickly discarded his cigarette, grinding it under his foot.
"Ms. Stone," he said, straightening his uniform.
Odalys saw that he was alone, but two cigarette butts on the ground indicated he'd been waiting awhile.
"What's up?" she asked.
After a moment, Lee opened his car door, produced a file of documents, and handed them to Odalys. She was confused; not everyone could access confidential police documents. However, Lee's serious expression suggested trouble.
Odalys quickly scanned the documents. "Are you suggesting the drug dealer who provoked me on my livestream is involved in illegal organ trafficking?" she gasped.
She'd texted Lee during the livestream incident. He'd responded swiftly, apprehending the dealer at the dock. The shocking discovery: the dealer was involved in a far more heinous crime.
Odalys was terrified.
"Yes," Lee confirmed. "Under interrogation, he confessed to selling drugs and modifying vehicles โ vehicles from the black market โ for a higher price. That's why we weren't alerted. We found several cars, as instructed, but no suspects. The vehicles were mobile operating rooms; victims were burned with them after organ removal. The modifications were expensive."
"My men have been working days on this with no progress. No one reported the cars stolen. I suspect Francis is the target," Lee speculated.
"Did you investigate the drug dealer's recent associates? Dealers at his level are cautious; trust is hard to earn," Odalys said. "The culprit must be someone he knows well; he wouldn't risk it otherwise. He confronted you on the livestream because he thought he could escape the dock even if you called the police. He knew the police response time; he believed he'd be gone before they arrived."
"My quick response was thanks to my record," Lee added. "Francis was targeted because of his bad luck and his connection to you?" Odalys murmured.
Lee listened quietly.
"Check if Edie is in contact with the drug dealer," Odalys continued. "Where did she get the drugs? That might be a clue."
7:03 AM
"Lee, the drugs Edie injected me with contained a curse worm, but it didn't affect me," Odalys said. "It could affect ordinary people, though."
Lee looked worried. "We'll investigate Edie and Francis. He's a target, and the culprit might not give up yet," he said.
Odalys remembered the attempt to abduct Francis and suspected his body was somehow special.
"Okay," she said, handing back the documents. As Lee turned to leave, she had a sudden thought. "Someone stood up for me and sued the Bennetts for abandonment. Knox called this morning. He'll handle the case; he witnessed it. You help the police enough; I don't want you distracted."
Odalys was surprised. She hadn't expected the police to assist with her personal matters.
"Please thank Knox," she said gratefully.
The police supported Odalys, but the Bennetts denied wrongdoing.
"We won't spare parents who abandon their children," Lee grinned, putting on his hat and leaving.
Odalys watched him go, then noticed swirling evil spirits around him. She shouted, "Lee!" and ran after him. Lee, however, was on the phone and moving quickly. He entered his car and sped toward the station. Odalys stopped, momentarily stunned.
She quickly texted, "[You're in danger. Stop and wait for me.]" There was no reply; he was still on the phone. Panicked, she followed him in her car. As she considered forcing him to stop, a motorcycle sped from an alley. Odalys slammed on her brakes, narrowly avoiding a collision. The motorcyclist, cursing, approached her car, foot raised to kick the door. Odalys rolled down the window, produced a talisman, and flicked it at him. He froze, staring with wide eyes. She then tossed him a wad of cash.
The ending is abrupt and needs further context.
