Chapter 76
โThank you, Luna,โ she breathed. โBut I donโt understand. Why are you doing all this? Youโve neverโฆโ Her voice trailed off, but she didnโt need to finish. I understood perfectly. I felt my chest constrict, a lump forming in my throat. It was true; sheโd never seen this side of me before.
Offering a thin smile, I patted her hand and stood. โTake the rest of the week off,โ I said gently. โYou need time to recover. And donโt worry; youโll still receive your regular wages.โ
Ana looked even more stunned. She opened her mouth, closed it, then finally said, swallowing hard, โLuna Hannahโฆ thank you. Youโre very kind. I donโt know how to repay youโโ
โThereโs no need,โ I interjected, stepping back. โYouโve earned some rest. Please, donโt think about it.โ
Ana nodded and stood. At the door, she paused, hand on the doorknob. Her next words chilled me.
โOne more thing, Luna,โ she said, turning. Her gaze flickered towards the bathroom. โThose supplements you have hiddenโฆ are you planning to take them again?โ
My mouth went dry. I instinctively followed her gaze to the bathroom, to the little bottle of diet pills tucked away in the medicine cabinet. Part of me wanted to lie, but I knew sheโd seen them. And I no longer wanted to lie.
โIโm trying not to,โ I admitted, shame creeping into my voice. โBut itโs difficult.โ
A heavy silence fell. Ana looked at me, her expression unreadable. When she spoke, her voice was low and insistent. โFlush them,โ she urged, her eyes widening slightly. โFlush them and never take them again.โ
โI know Iโve gotten too thinโโ I began, but she shook her head.
โItโs not about your weight.โ Her eyes flickered to my belly, making me feel strangely exposed. When she looked up, my stomach dropped. โTheyโre not what you think they are.โ
I frowned. โWhat do you mean?โ
โJust be careful.โ
Before I could respond, she was gone. I rushed to the bathroom. With shaky hands, I pulled out the bottle and examined the pills. They looked normal: small, blue, with a little โWโ for WhiteRabbit.
Theyโre not what you think they are, she had said. I furrowed my brow, thinking so deeply I almost missed the bedroom door opening again.
