Chapter 382

But my eyes widened as I took in the folder's contents. Inside were photographs of Alvin in various compromising situations throughout Darkmoon territory: public intoxication, urinating on buildings, even soliciting prostitutes. I felt nauseous.

โ€œI see,โ€ I said, maintaining a neutral tone. โ€œAnd what do you propose we do about thisโ€ฆ situation?โ€

David leaned back, a smug look on his face. โ€œAs it happens, we have your wayward cousin in custody. I thought you might want to deal with him personally.โ€

He snapped his fingers, and the doors opened. Two burly guards entered, half-dragging a disheveled, handcuffed Alvin between them. I fought back a gasp.

โ€œHannah! Oh, thank the Goddess,โ€ Alvin slurred, his eyes bloodshot. โ€œTell these barbarians to unhand me! Donโ€™t they know who I am?โ€

I pinched the bridge of my nose, a headache forming. โ€œOh, Alvin,โ€ I sighed. โ€œWhat have you done now?โ€

David rose. โ€œIโ€™ll release him into your custody, Alpha Hannah. But if he sets foot in Darkmoon territory again and causes more trouble, I wonโ€™t be so lenient. Heโ€™ll face imprisonment, diplomatic immunity notwithstanding.โ€

I nodded, standing. โ€œUnderstood, Alpha David. My sincerest apologiesโ€”and my word that this wonโ€™t happen again.โ€

And to think we almost let that fool become Alpha of Silvermoon, I thought, though I kept that to myself.

David and his entourage departed. As the guards released Alvin, I gave Melody to Viona and approached my cousin. Without warning, I slapped him.

โ€œOw!โ€ he yelped. โ€œWhat was that for?โ€

โ€œFor being a complete idiot,โ€ I hissed. โ€œDo you have any idea how much trouble youโ€™ve caused? Youโ€™re lucky I donโ€™t imprison you myself.โ€

Alvin rubbed his head, glaring. โ€œYouโ€™re the one who told me to go on a โ€˜nice little vacationโ€™,โ€ he sneered.

I raised my hand, and he flinched, silencing him. โ€œYouโ€™re sentenced to two months of community service at the Silvermoon soup kitchen,โ€ I said, wiping my hand on my pants. โ€œPerhaps that will teach you some humility.โ€

I nodded to a guard. โ€œTake him. Ensure he causes no further trouble.โ€

As the guard led Alvin past, he sneered at Melody in Vionaโ€™s arms. The baby, sensing the hostility, cried.

I suppressed the urge to shout at Alvin and took Melody from Viona. She quieted as I bounced her, and I ignored the disdainful stares as we returned to the car.

โ€œWell, that could have gone worse,โ€ Viona said quietly as we passed through the gates.

I snorted. โ€œSurprisingly, David wasnโ€™t as cruel as I expectedโ€”not like his father. Though his entourage viewed us as a circus act.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re unused to seeing a woman in power,โ€ Viona reasoned. โ€œLet alone one who brings her baby to meetings.โ€

I looked down at Melody, now contentedly sucking her thumb. โ€œWell, theyโ€™d better get used to it. Iโ€™m not going anywhere, and neither is she.โ€

As we entered the car, I saw Alvin being roughly shoved into another vehicle. He continued to mutter incoherently.

I shook my head, exhausted. Viona and I exchanged a look of annoyance.

โ€œMenโ€ฆโ€ we murmured in unison.
