Chapter 303

Hannah

I picked up my phone, my heart racing as I dialed a number I hadnโ€™t called in months. As it rang, I paced in my bedroom, my free hand nervously fidgeting with my shirt hem.

My sister, Lily, still lived at home with our parents. We hadnโ€™t spoken much since my marriage to Noah; our visits were infrequent. But that didn't diminish our love; life simply intervened.

Not anymore. With my fatherโ€™s birthday approaching, Noah and I would be making our annual trip to Silvermoon. Once there, I would tell Lily everything, and I was certain she would help me escape. I wouldnโ€™t be returning to Nightcrest.

โ€œHello?โ€ My sisterโ€™s voice, slightly surprised, came through after a few rings.

โ€œHey, Lily. Itโ€™s been a while.โ€

โ€œHannah! Oh my goodness, is everything okay? Itโ€™s so late!โ€

I sighed and sank onto the edge of my bed. A quick glance at the clock revealed it was well after midnightโ€”a fact I hadnโ€™t realized. But lately, after that dinner with Noahโ€”even though it had been nearly a weekโ€”I was finding it harder and harder to sleep.

โ€œYeah, everythingโ€™sโ€ฆ fine,โ€ I lied, unsure how much to tell her yet. โ€œI just wanted to catch up. Is Dad throwing a birthday party this year?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Lily replied, sounding incredulous; our father always threw enormous birthday parties, making my question rather ridiculous. But she continued, โ€œIโ€™m so excited to see you. Iโ€™ve missed you so much.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve missed you too,โ€ I said softly. More than you know.

She paused, and I could hear her infectious smile through the phone. โ€œAnd from what I understand, you have a lot to update me on.โ€

My face paled, but then I realized she wasnโ€™t referring to the pregnancy; she meant my eating disorder campaign, my gala, and my recent public achievements.

โ€œOh. Weโ€™ll catch up when I get there,โ€ I said. I bit my lip, hesitating before asking the question that had been gnawing at me: โ€œHey, Lilyโ€ฆ how are things at home? I mean, with Dadโ€™s businesses and all?โ€

Another pause, longer this time. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Her voice sounded strained.

โ€œI justโ€ฆ I heard some rumors that things werenโ€™t going so well. Is that true?โ€

Lilyโ€™s sigh crackled through the phone. โ€œHannahโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know how you heard about that, butโ€ฆ yes. Dadโ€™s been having some trouble lately.โ€

My stomach dropped. โ€œWhat kind of trouble?โ€

Chapter 30J

โ€œHe made some bad investments,โ€ Lily explained, her voice low. โ€œHe had to liquidate a few businesses. Itโ€™sโ€ฆ itโ€™s not great, Hannah. A lot of people lost their jobs.โ€

I cursed under my breath. So Noah wasnโ€™t bluffing after all. Iโ€™d hoped heโ€™d been manipulating me, but he wasnโ€™t. I couldnโ€™t decide which was worse: his lying to control me, or the truthโ€”that he might actually have leverage over me.

โ€œHow bad is it?โ€

โ€œBad enough that you shouldnโ€™t bring it up when you visit,โ€ Lily warned. โ€œThe packโ€™s upset, and Dadโ€™s stressed enough as it is. Just pretend you donโ€™t know, okay?โ€

I nodded, even though she couldnโ€™t see me. โ€œI wonโ€™t say anything, I promise. I justโ€ฆ I needed to know.โ€

โ€œWhy the sudden interest?โ€ Lily asked. โ€œNo offense, but itโ€™s not like you to care about Dadโ€™s businesses.โ€

I cringed; it was true. Even before the marriage, Iโ€™d always been somewhat disconnected from our fatherโ€™s pack life, even though I possessed the female Alpha gene that made me his heir.
