Chapter 303
Hannah
I picked up my phone, my heart racing as I dialed a number I hadnโt called in months. As it rang, I paced in my bedroom, my free hand nervously fidgeting with my shirt hem.
My sister, Lily, still lived at home with our parents. We hadnโt spoken much since my marriage to Noah; our visits were infrequent. But that didn't diminish our love; life simply intervened.
Not anymore. With my fatherโs birthday approaching, Noah and I would be making our annual trip to Silvermoon. Once there, I would tell Lily everything, and I was certain she would help me escape. I wouldnโt be returning to Nightcrest.
โHello?โ My sisterโs voice, slightly surprised, came through after a few rings.
โHey, Lily. Itโs been a while.โ
โHannah! Oh my goodness, is everything okay? Itโs so late!โ
I sighed and sank onto the edge of my bed. A quick glance at the clock revealed it was well after midnightโa fact I hadnโt realized. But lately, after that dinner with Noahโeven though it had been nearly a weekโI was finding it harder and harder to sleep.
โYeah, everythingโsโฆ fine,โ I lied, unsure how much to tell her yet. โI just wanted to catch up. Is Dad throwing a birthday party this year?โ
โYes,โ Lily replied, sounding incredulous; our father always threw enormous birthday parties, making my question rather ridiculous. But she continued, โIโm so excited to see you. Iโve missed you so much.โ
โIโve missed you too,โ I said softly. More than you know.
She paused, and I could hear her infectious smile through the phone. โAnd from what I understand, you have a lot to update me on.โ
My face paled, but then I realized she wasnโt referring to the pregnancy; she meant my eating disorder campaign, my gala, and my recent public achievements.
โOh. Weโll catch up when I get there,โ I said. I bit my lip, hesitating before asking the question that had been gnawing at me: โHey, Lilyโฆ how are things at home? I mean, with Dadโs businesses and all?โ
Another pause, longer this time. โWhat do you mean?โ Her voice sounded strained.
โI justโฆ I heard some rumors that things werenโt going so well. Is that true?โ
Lilyโs sigh crackled through the phone. โHannahโฆ I donโt know how you heard about that, butโฆ yes. Dadโs been having some trouble lately.โ
My stomach dropped. โWhat kind of trouble?โ
Chapter 30J
โHe made some bad investments,โ Lily explained, her voice low. โHe had to liquidate a few businesses. Itโsโฆ itโs not great, Hannah. A lot of people lost their jobs.โ
I cursed under my breath. So Noah wasnโt bluffing after all. Iโd hoped heโd been manipulating me, but he wasnโt. I couldnโt decide which was worse: his lying to control me, or the truthโthat he might actually have leverage over me.
โHow bad is it?โ
โBad enough that you shouldnโt bring it up when you visit,โ Lily warned. โThe packโs upset, and Dadโs stressed enough as it is. Just pretend you donโt know, okay?โ
I nodded, even though she couldnโt see me. โI wonโt say anything, I promise. I justโฆ I needed to know.โ
โWhy the sudden interest?โ Lily asked. โNo offense, but itโs not like you to care about Dadโs businesses.โ
I cringed; it was true. Even before the marriage, Iโd always been somewhat disconnected from our fatherโs pack life, even though I possessed the female Alpha gene that made me his heir.
