Chapter 254
โSuit yourself,โ Viona said, leaning back and folding her arms. โAlthough, with the divorce coming up, this could be used against youโฆโ
โYeah,โ Drake added softly. โThe Alpha Council could use the picture to claim that youโre still in love with Noah.โ
I didnโt know what to say. The implication in Drakeโs words was clear: he wasnโt just talking about the Alpha Council. He was talking about himself.
The rest of lunch passed as usual, though I couldnโt shake those pictures from my mindโand Drake, for his part, couldnโt seem to take his eyes off me. I kept avoiding his gaze, pretending to be fascinated by the layers of my croissant and the foam in my coffee.
After our meal, we paid the bill and headed our separate ways. Drake caught my elbow as I was following Vionaโwho was still with meโto the car.
โHannah, can we talk for a moment?โ he asked, glancing at Viona. โIn private?โ
Viona huffed, hands on her hips. Before she could retort, I nodded. โIโll be right back, Vi.โ She huffed again and got into the car, and Drake pulled me a few feet away.
โWhatโs up?โ I asked once we were out of earshot.
Drake took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. He looked nervous, a quality uncharacteristic of him. โI just wanted to let you know. I never found any evidence of Noah and Zoe cheating. I really donโt think he is, Hannah.โ
A strange combination of disappointment and relief washed over me. โOh,โ was all I could manage.
โAnd since I failed, you donโt need to go on that date with me after the divorce,โ Drake continued. Then, more hesitantly, โIf there even is a divorce.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
He shot me a strange look. โHannah, itโs clear that you still have feelings for Noah.โ
โDrake,โ I said incredulously, โthere will be a divorce. Nothing has changed.โ
He looked skeptical, placing one hand on his hip. โThat pictureโโ
โWas taken during a vulnerable moment when we both needed comfort after a harrowing experience,โ I finished for him, feeling my hackles rise. โAnd I thought you agreed it was a breach of privacy.โ
โI did. And I still think it was,โ Drake replied calmly. โBut you canโt deny the chemistry between you two: the way he was holding youโฆ I donโt think that was just out of necessity.โ
My mouth opened and closed as my mind whirled, searching for a response. Finally, I thought back to that night and how, even after everything, Noah didnโt remember our past. He was my hero, and I cared for him, butโฆ
โThere is no love between Noah and me, Drake,โ I whispered. โNot anymore.โ
He sighed, but didnโt seem to want to press the matter. โIf you say so. I justโฆ I care about you, Hannah. I want you to be happy. Thatโs all.โ
โI appreciate that,โ I said, softening slightly. โBut my happiness isnโt your responsibility.โ
Drake nodded, a sad smile on his face. โI know. But you canโt blame a guy for caring.โ
I watched as Drake walked away, a whirlwind of emotionsโrelief, frustration, sadness, yearningโswirling inside me. The busy street seemed to fade as I lost myself in thoughts of Noahโs arms wrapped protectively around me. I didnโt love Noah anymoreโฆ right?
