Chapter 208
Hannah
After my dance with Drake, I returned to my friends. Amber, Emma, and Viona were huddled together, giggling. โWhatโs so funny?โ I asked.
Amber turned, her eyes sparkling. โOh, Hannah! Youโll never guess! Iโm engaged!โ She held out her left hand, displaying a glittering diamond ring.
โWhat?โ I gasped, examining the ring. โAmber, thatโs amazing! When did this happen?โ
โJust now!โ Amber squealed. โJake proposed right here at the festival!โ
Emma clapped. โIt was so romantic!โ
A pang of sadness hit me. I wished Iโd been present for my friend's joyous moment instead of plotting to catch my husband cheating. I pushed the feeling aside, forcing a smile. I was truly happy for her.
โIโm so happy for you, Amber,โ I said, hugging her. โCongratulations!โ
As we admired the ring and discussed wedding plans, Vionaโs discomfort grew. She kept glancing nervously around the room.
โViona?โ I asked softly. โIs everything alright?โ
She hesitated. โItโs Andrew. He keeps trying to talk to me, and Iโฆ I canโt deal with him right now. He grosses me out.โ
I saw Andrew nearby, his gaze fixed on Viona. He grinned and waved when we noticed him, causing us to quickly look away.
โShould I say something?โ I whispered.
Viona shook her head. โNo, itโs fine. I wish heโd leave me alone. He thinks an arranged marriage negates the need for personal space.โ
I put a hand on her arm. โIโm here for you. If you need help with this arranged marriage, just ask.โ
She smiled faintly. โThanks, Hannah. I appreciate thatโฆ Oh, Goddess, here he comes.โ
Andrew approached. I moved protectively in front of Viona, but she stopped me. โViona,โ Andrew said hopefully, โWould you like to dance? Or perhaps some ice cream?โ
Vionaโs shoulders tensed. โAndrew, Iโve already told youโโ
โIf weโre engaged, we should spend time together,โ he insisted.
Vionaโs frustration was evident. She looked at me, then Andrew. โIโm not interested in talking to you, now or ever. Please respect that.โ
Andrewโs face fell, but he persisted. โYour parents think weโre a good match. Donโt you agree?โ
That was the final straw. Viona straightened. โNo, Andrew. I donโt agree. Iโm not interested in an arranged marriage, and thatโs final.โ
She turned to us. โIโm going home. This is too much.โ
โOf course,โ I said, hugging her. โText me when you get home, okay?โ
Viona left, leaving Andrew bewildered. I started to confront him, but he was already gone.
Turning back to Amber and Emma, I saw Noah and Zoe emerging from a side room, whispering together.
โBastard,โ I muttered, clenching my teeth.
Noahโs eyes met mine across the room. He pushed through the crowd toward me, his jaw clenched.
I couldnโt face him. Turning to my friends, I said, โAmber, congratulations! We should have a girlsโ night soon. But I have to go.โ
Amber and Emma looked surprised. โOkay, Hannah. Goodnight.โ
โGoodnight.โ
I left, avoiding Noah. Near the exit, I paused at the Moon Goddess altar. The incense was lit, its sweet scent drawing me in. I stood there, lips pursed.
Why? Why had the Moon Goddess given me a second chance if things were still so difficult?
The tiny clay statuette stared back, impassive. She wasnโt in the statue. Maybe she didnโt even exist.
โHannah!โ Noah called, breaking my reverie. He was still approaching. Sighing, I hurried to my room.

I ran back to my room, locking the doorโjust in case Noah tried to talk to me. He didnโt.
It was late, the festival ending. I prepared for bed, replaying the night's events. Noah and Zoeโฆ what had they been doing?
No. It didnโt matter. I needed proof of his infidelity for the divorce.
Later, while brushing my teeth, I heard a faint soundโsomeone calling my name. I went to the window and opened it. Vionaโs voice drifted up from below.
โHannah! Hannah, down here!โ
I leaned out. Viona was standing in the hedges.
