Chapter 185: Hannah
The sounds of fighting ceased, leaving only the growls escaping my throatโa reaction I hadn't consciously initiated. Drake stared, momentarily stunned, his gaze dropping to my left hand protectively covering my stomach. Then, meeting my fiery gaze, understanding dawned.
โHannah, are youโฆ?โ
No, I thought, panicking. Pull yourself together!
Straightening, I cleared my throat and left the ring, hoping to pass it off as a simple stomachache.
โSorry, Drake,โ I mumbled, hurrying toward my gym bag. โIโm not feeling well. Letโs call it a day.โ
But Drake wasn't convinced. He followed, his footsteps echoing in the empty training center. I kept my back turned, hoping to hide my crimson face, focusing solely on retrieving my bag and escaping.
โHannah, wait,โ he called, jogging to catch up. โWe need to talk.โ
I quickened my pace, breathless, but Drake was faster. He reached me as I grabbed my bag, placing a hand on my shoulder to stop my flight.
โHannah,โ he said, his voice low and serious. โYouโre pregnant, arenโt you?โ
I froze, my heart pounding. He couldn't know; only Viona knew, and even then, I often questioned my decision to confide in her. Slowly, I turned, striving for a neutral expression.
โWhat?โ I scoffed, feigning ignorance. โNo, I justโโ
โYou donโt need to lie,โ Drake interrupted, his intense gaze making my stomach churn. โYour reaction when I touched your stomach, the protectivenessโฆ it all makes sense.โ
I tried to deny it, but no words came. My silence seemed to confirm his suspicions; he nodded slowly.
โI thought so,โ he murmured, sighing and running a hand through his hair. โLook, I wonโt tell anyone. You donโt even have to admit it. But Hannah, you canโt engage in combat while pregnant. Itโs too dangerous.โ
My heart hammered. Dammit, he was too perceptive. There was no turning back.
โDrake, if I am pregnant,โ I said cautiously, still not confirming it, โthen I need to protect my child. I canโt stop training and become vulnerable again.โ
His expression softened; he stepped closer. โI understand. But there are safer ways to train, ways that wonโt put you or the baby at risk.โ
โLike what?โ I asked, despite my suspicion.
โDefensive techniques, evasion, non-contact drills,โ Drake suggested. โI can modify exercises to avoid abdominal impact. If you want to continue training, Iโll find safe ways.โ
I narrowed my eyes, still wary despite his apparent kindness. โAnd, hypothetically, if I needed these accommodationsโwhich I donโtโwhat would you want in return?โ
Drake smiled sheepishly. โJust what we agreed on: a date with Zoe.โ
I chuckled. โYouโre still hung up on that?โ
โIโm persistent,โ Drake grinned. His expression turned serious. โBut Hannah, I want to help you. This isnโt just about Zoe.โ
