Chapter 162

โ€œI hope youโ€™re enjoying the luncheon, Felicia,โ€ I said pleasantly, raising my glass. โ€œIs your family here?โ€

Felicia visibly blanched. โ€œIโ€™m afraid they didnโ€™t come.โ€

โ€œAt all?โ€

She shook her head, her gaze falling to her lap. Pushing her glasses up her nose, I saw her lower lip quiver. โ€œNo. They assumed I would lose.โ€

My chest clenched. โ€œWhy would they assume that?โ€ I asked. โ€œYour speech was phenomenal, you answered every question with grace, your overseas charity work was incredibly impressive, and your work as a local school teacher for inner-city kids is commendable.โ€

Felicia paused, drawing a breath. She opened and closed her mouth, then turned to me with a sad smile. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€ฆ pretty,โ€ she said softly.

โ€œFeliciaโ€”โ€

โ€œI mean, look at me,โ€ she cut me off, gesturing to herself. โ€œIโ€™m short and a bit chubby, I wear glasses, my hair is frizzy, my nose is too big, and I have a bit of a lisp. Itโ€™s okay; Iโ€™m not upset. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ one would typically assume I wouldnโ€™t win a competition like this.โ€

My mouth frowned. โ€œNone of those things make someone unattractive, Felicia,โ€ I said gently, placing my hand over hers. โ€œI see a bright, beautiful young woman with a kind heart. And franklyโ€ฆโ€

I lowered my voice, leaning closer. โ€œI think you have a gorgeous body. I wish I were as curvy as you. Your hair is beautiful and vibrant, and Iโ€™d love to see it down. Your glasses are cute, your nose speaks to your heritage, and your lisp makes you stand out. Who told you any of that isnโ€™t beautiful?โ€

Felicia flushed and bit her lip, looking away. โ€œA lot of people,โ€ she admitted with a wry laugh. โ€œButโ€ฆ that means a lot, Luna Hannah. Thank you.โ€

I grinned and patted her hand. โ€œBesides,โ€ I said, โ€œI know youโ€™ll use that reward money well.โ€

She nodded vehemently. โ€œOh, yes. I already have plans to use the funds to buy new equipment for my schoolโ€™s classrooms, andโ€ฆโ€

Over the next half hour, Felicia and I chatted nonstop; she was a sweet and intelligent young woman, and I was glad she had won.

However, I was curious who Noah voted for. Did he vote for Felicia, or someone else? I wanted to ask, but I hadnโ€™t seen him. In fact, I was also curious who Zoe voted for, but I hadnโ€™t seen her either. Only Drake remained, chatting animatedly with a stagehand in the corner.

Frowning, I searched for my husband. When I didnโ€™t find him in the crowd, I rounded the corner to the bathrooms, wondering if he was there.

And thatโ€™s when I saw them: Noah and Zoe, huddled at the end of the hallwayโ€ฆ their heads bent close, their hands gesturing wildly.

โ€œSheโ€ฆ I donโ€™tโ€ฆ I knowโ€ฆโ€

I could only make out fragments of their conversation, but something felt unsettling. Pressing myself against the corner, I peered around to watch, straining to hear.

Then Zoeโ€™s head snapped up, her nostrils flaring. โ€œQuiet, Noah,โ€ she commanded, raising her hand. โ€œWeโ€™re being watched.โ€
