Chapter 0158

When I finished telling Viona my storyโ€”everything from my pregnancy to my death to my rebirth, all of it from beginning to endโ€”the room was utterly silent. Down below, the sounds of the bustling city rose, but I hardly heard them. Only the sound of my blood rushing in my ears filled the space.

Viona said nothing for a long time, her mouth working uselessly. Her face had gone pale, her eyes wide as if she had just seen a ghost. Iโ€™m sure I looked much the same.

And then, suddenly, she started laughing. โ€œHannah, this is ridiculous,โ€ she crowed, smacking my arm and rising from the couch to walk to her kitchen. โ€œDid Amber put you up to this?โ€

I furrowed my brow and followed her, watching incredulously as she casually prepared two cups of tea. โ€œViona, Iโ€™m serious,โ€ I said. She chuckled again. โ€œYeah. Sure.โ€

โ€œViona.โ€ Stomping my feet, I circled the counter island and gripped her shoulders to force her to look at meโ€”so she could see my sincerity. โ€œIโ€™m serious.โ€

For a few long moments, Viona blinked at me, her face slowly blanching once more. โ€œHannahโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLook, I know how it sounds,โ€ I said, releasing her and stepping back, โ€œbut itโ€™s true. All of that stuff that happened at the acceptance ceremony with Zoe? Yeah, in my past life, I didnโ€™t handle it well and faced a lot of public scrutiny. Thatโ€™s why I took it so well this time; because I knew it was coming.โ€

Viona swallowed, hastily shaking her head. โ€œOh, honey,โ€ she breathed, โ€œyou need help. Iโ€™m sorry, Hannah, I know youโ€™re going through a lot, but itโ€™s simply not possible.โ€

โ€œWhen have I ever lied to you, Viona?!โ€ I snapped.

Her eyes widened further, if that were even possible. Her mouth waggled as she tried to come up with a retort, but clearly there was none. Finally, gripping her hair, she whirled around and strode to the window. โ€œOkay, okayโ€ฆ So letโ€™s just say, for the sake of argument, that this really did happenโ€ฆโ€ She paused, and I could hear her audibly gulp. โ€œWhat about Noah? He doesnโ€™t know any of this?โ€

โ€œNo. And he never will.โ€

โ€œEven the baby?โ€ she asked. I felt my chest clench at the mention of it. โ€œI might tell him about the baby when the divorce is finalized. But not a moment before. And likely not at all.โ€

Viona whirled around, her mouth hanging open. โ€œHannah, you canโ€™t keep his child from him,โ€ she breathed. โ€œThe wholeโ€ฆ rebirth thing is one thing, but your baby? His heir? Heโ€™ll find out anyway!โ€

โ€œAnd if he does, then Iโ€™ll be protected,โ€ I said. โ€œI already made him promise that once weโ€™re divorced, I can take anyone or anything I want from Nightcrest back to my own pack. That includes our child, although he doesnโ€™t know it yet.โ€

Viona continued to stare at me incredulously.

โ€œLook, Vi,โ€ I continued, โ€œI know how it sounds. But I canโ€™t tell Noah about the baby, I just canโ€™t. Because if I do, heโ€™ll make me stay in this marriage. Andโ€ฆโ€ I paused, my throat constricting. โ€œโ€ฆI canโ€™t do it, Viona. I canโ€™t stay in a loveless marriage forever. If I do, then I know Iโ€™ll just wind up dead again.โ€

After I spoke, I looked away and clenched my jaw hard. No, I wouldnโ€™t cry. I needed to be strong, but damn, it was hard.

Viona sighed softly and crossed the room again, gripping my hands in hers. โ€œI understand,โ€ she said gently. โ€œButโ€ฆ is it really so loveless?โ€

โ€œWhโ€ฆWhat?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œI mean, it seems like heโ€™s trying. Maybe you two couldโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know, rekindle what you once had.โ€

I let out a wry laugh. โ€œFat chance of that happening.โ€

There was a long silenceโ€”long enough for Vionaโ€™s words to sink in, at least. Maybe she was rightโ€ฆ Maybe there was a way to rekindle our love. Unlikely, but there had to be at least a shred of a chance.

โ€œHannah,โ€ Viona finally said, โ€œI wonโ€™t tell anyone because I respect you and love you. And if you decide not to tell him, then Iโ€™ll support you through that.โ€

โ€œThanks, Viona.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ She paused, fixing me with a stern look. I braced myself for what was to come. โ€œAt least consider telling him,โ€ she said softly, her hand coming to rest on my belly. โ€œJust consider it.โ€

I swallowed hard and looked away. โ€œIโ€™ll think about it, Viona. I will.โ€
