Chapter 154
Hannah
โCan I take you to dinner tonight? Just you and me?โ
I blinked incredulously at Noah, trying to decipher his intentions. Was he serious? Teasing me? Or was this another one of his schemes, like that last party?
โJust the two of us?โ I asked, hand on hip, a disbelieving look on my face. โWhy? Another networking event? Will Zoe be there?โ
Noah sighed, running a hand through his hair. โNo, Hannah,โ he said tersely. โItโs justโฆโ He paused, gritting his teeth. โYou know what? Nevermind. Clearly youโre not interested.โ
He turned to leave. Panic welled up; instinctively, I caught his elbow.
โWait,โ I said, my voice trembling slightly. โโฆI might be interested.โ
Noah paused, a smirk playing on his lips. โIs that so?โ he said, pulling away. โNow youโre interested?โ
โJust tell me the details,โ I said. โAnd if itโs another trick to publicly humiliate me, I want a warning.โ
Noah stared, incredulous. He sighed, throwing his hands up. โItโs not like that, Hannah. Canโt you have a little faith in me?โ
โHow could I?โ I retorted, chuckling wryly. โLast time, it was a self-serving event. And you didnโt even know our anniversary date!โ
Noah visibly blanched. โOkay, okay,โ he said. โThat was awful, and Iโm sorry. Itโs a reservation at Amiciโs tonight. Just you and me. A private room, a bottle of wineโฆโ
Amiciโsโฆ a romantic Italian bistro overlooking the river. We hadnโt been there in ages. The prospect was tempting, but I still suspected more.
โWhat for?โ I asked. โIs it a special day?โ
โNo.โ He shrugged. โI want to treat you.โ
Narrowing my eyes, I searched his face for a lieโbut found none. His green eyes flickered across my features. He still had his usual stony expression, but I believed him.
I let out a breath. โAlright.โ
He raised an eyebrow. โSo youโll come?โ
โYes,โ I said, my face reddening. โIโll go.โ
Later that night, Noah pulled up to the bistro. Candlelight flickered from the windows, couples sat at tables, people strolled hand-in-hand. It was incredibly romantic. Too bad my husband wasnโt the romantic type, at least not with me.
โWhy Amiciโs?โ I asked, watching him straighten his tie.
He shruggedโan infuriating gesture given the bistroโs intimacy. This wasnโt a date. So why here?
โI like their gnocchi,โ he replied.
I pursed my lips. The gnocchi? I suspected more.
We entered, the sounds of violin music and clinking silverware filling the air. A hostess appeared.
โAlpha Noah, Luna Hannah. This way,โ she said, leading us to a private room.
As we walked, I glanced at Noah. His face was impassive, but his freshly laundered suit and clean-shaven face told a different story. He looked perfect.
I wore a slim black dress, strappy heels, and a velvet shawl. A red clutch matched my lipstick. My hair was perfectly curled. I had made an effort.
I wondered if he noticed; did he think I looked nice? Beautiful? If so, he didnโt say it.
The hostess stopped at a private room. โHere you are,โ she said. โYour server will be with you shortly.โ
She left. My gaze followed her before returning to Noah, who was holding something. An extra necktie.
I furrowed my brow. โWhatโs that for?โ
He held it out. โFor your eyes. Iโd like it to be a surprise.โ
