Chapter 137

โ€œJustโ€ฆ why?โ€ I managed, swallowing hard. โ€œWhy would you be with her when your wife was injured at home?โ€

He paused, a muscle twitching in his jaw. โ€œIt was for Adam.โ€

โ€œAdam?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want him to watch his mom go through that alone,โ€ he explained. โ€œAnd I didnโ€™t trust Drake to show up. So I stayed with him last night until his grandparents arrived.โ€

My insides felt as if theyโ€™d fallen out. The dented pillows, the comb, the hairโ€ฆ Noah had slept here last night, but not for the reasons Iโ€™d thought. He wasnโ€™t with Zoe. He was caring for a scared little boy.

โ€œOh,โ€ was all I could say.

A long silence followed. Finally, I touched his arm. โ€œYouโ€™d make a good dad,โ€ I said softly. โ€œReally.โ€

Noahโ€™s jaw clenched; his arm recoiled. I wincedโ€”Iโ€™d hurt him. The last time we talked about parenthood, Iโ€™d told him Iโ€™d never have children with him. Now, here I was, pregnant with his child.

โ€œNoah, Iโ€ฆโ€

The words caught in my throat. Iโ€™m pregnant. Iโ€™m pregnant with your baby. I ached to tell him, to feel his arms around me, to hear him say everything would be okay.

But I couldnโ€™t. It wouldnโ€™t be his child, not in the ways that mattered. My imagined future was a fantasy.

โ€œAnyway,โ€ he said, pulling away, โ€œIโ€™m glad you ate. Itโ€™s good to see you enjoy foodโ€”you always have, even when you donโ€™t let yourself.โ€

I blushed and turned to bed. I had always loved food.

โ€œHey,โ€ I said, turning back, โ€œremember when we were teenagers and stole those roasted quail eggs from my parentsโ€™ kitchen?โ€ A fond smile touched my lips. โ€œMy parents were furious; they were for guests. But the juice running down our chins, the flavorโ€ฆ it was worth it.โ€

I vividly remembered it: sneaking through the kitchen, stuffing our pockets before the summer picnic. We fled the angry chef, found a tree, and feasted. The breeze swayed the leaves above us, the warm, gooey insides staining our shirts. We laughed, ate until our bellies were full, and laughed even when scolded.

But Noah only looked confused. He shook his head. โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about, Hannah.โ€
