Chapter 129

โ€œIโ€ฆ I was suffering from a binge eating disorder,โ€ she admitted. โ€œAnd it was beginning to get out of hand. I knew you took those pills to help yourself purge, so I decided to give them a try.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆ?โ€ I urged, sensing there was more.

Ana sighed. โ€œButโ€ฆ my husband and I were also trying to conceive our second child. My menstrual cycle became erratic, and I found it difficult to conceive, even though I had no issues with my first child. So I had bloodwork done, and they found trace amounts of contraceptive in my body.โ€

My eyes widened. โ€œIs that true?โ€ I whispered, withdrawing my hand. โ€œSoโ€ฆ so you knew all this time?โ€

The maid nodded hastily, then leaned closer, gripping my hand tightly. โ€œI didnโ€™t know whether you were aware of the contraceptives, Luna,โ€ she said quickly. โ€œAt first, I thought you might have done it intentionally. I knew you and Alpha Noah didnโ€™t have the best relationshipโ€ฆโ€

Her voice trailed off, and I let out a derisive snort. โ€œThat obvious, huh?โ€

Ana glanced at me before continuing. โ€œEventually, I became too afraid to tell you because it would mean admitting to stealing from you. And for that, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œAna, you can tell me anything. I wouldnโ€™t have held it against you. Weโ€™ve known each other for years.โ€

โ€œYes, butโ€ฆโ€ Ana paused, staring at her hands. โ€œLuna, if I could be candidโ€”โ€

โ€œAbsolutely. Speak your mind.โ€

She drew a deep breath, seemingly steeling herself, before meeting my gaze. โ€œYou werenโ€™t always very kind to me. Only in this past month has it seemed as though you didnโ€™tโ€ฆ hate me.โ€

โ€œHate you?โ€ I breathed, momentarily stunned. Then it hit meโ€”all the times in my past life when I had been cruel to her. All the snide remarks, the little jabs at her cleaning or her attitude.

I sighed, feeling my shoulders slump. โ€œYouโ€™re right. I was a real bitch.โ€

โ€œLuna, noโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s alright,โ€ I assured her. โ€œI was. But Iโ€™m trying not to be anymore.โ€ I paused, wetting my lips. Finally, I patted her hand and offered a warm smile. โ€œThank you for being honest, Ana. And I hope you know that if youโ€™re ever struggling with your body image, youโ€™re beautifulโ€”truly.โ€

Ana blinked rapidly and bit her lip, trying to suppress a smile. โ€œThank you, Luna.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the truth,โ€ I said. โ€œIf you ever feel like youโ€™re hating on your body, come to me first. I understand what itโ€™s like to hate what you see in the mirror. I wouldnโ€™t wish that on anyone.โ€

Ana nodded and stood. I released her hand, watching her walk to the door. But just as she was about to leave, I called out, โ€œWait.โ€

She turned. โ€œYes, Luna?โ€

โ€œCall me Hannah from now on,โ€ I said. โ€œPlease.โ€

Ana breathed a sigh of relief. โ€œOkay. Goodnightโ€ฆ Hannah.โ€

Once Ana was gone, I sank further into my bed and furrowed my brow. My mind reeled from what Iโ€™d learnedโ€”and from what I already knew. I kept thinking about White Rabbitโ€™s disappearance and Noahโ€™s strange newsโ€”about how our family doctor had claimed I was too โ€˜frailโ€™ for sex outside our ovulation window.

I wondered if they could be connected. Too curious to rest, I called the doctorโ€™s office and asked when our family doctor had left.

โ€œLetโ€™s see,โ€ the receptionist said, pausing. โ€œThe doctor went on his tripโ€ฆ exactly two weeks ago.โ€

I furrowed my brow, checking my last message to White Rabbitโ€”whose account was gone, but our messages remained. Iโ€™d sent my last message exactly two weeks ago.
