Listen to this chapter:

Iโ€™ll Cover Her Debt

Hayleyโ€™s POV:

Preston immediately turned his blazing wolf eyes on me in anger. โ€œIf you spout nonsense again, Iโ€™ll make you regret it!โ€

I stayed calm with my arms crossed. โ€œSure. But first, keep your promise. Go get your designer, Cynthia Jefferson, from your store.โ€

He flashed his fangs at me, but the crowd backing me up stopped him from doing anything.

Watching him hold back his anger was honestly pretty satisfying.

I turned to Becky. โ€œAlso, I want to buy both her and her wolfโ€™s freedom. Iโ€™ll cover her debt. After this, the Sweets owe the Hanovers nothing.โ€

In the Cyclone Pack, there were shady rules when it came to trading people. It wasnโ€™t legal, but those contracts still held power.

Becky had signed one to join the Hanovers.

โ€œNo chance! She and her wolf belong to the Hanovers forever!โ€ Preston growled.

Becky looked crushed. โ€œMs. Carson, thereโ€™s no way you can save me. Please donโ€™t get dragged into this for my sake.โ€

I gently patted her hand, then shot Preston a look. โ€œSo, youโ€™re going to go back on your word?โ€

โ€œSo what? What are you gonna do? Force me?โ€ Preston shrugged like he couldnโ€™t care less.

Humbert looked uneasy. โ€œMs. Carson, what now?โ€

Seeing them getting nervous and disappointed, I snapped my fingers. A high-ranking wolf enforcer slipped out from the crowd, handed me a stack of papers, and disappeared just as fast.

โ€œTwelve years ago, Beckyโ€™s parents found a rare, top-grade sapphire during a rock betting auction. The Hanovers offered a cheap price. When her parents said no, they sent people to take it by force. In the end, her parents died because of their wolvesโ€™ severe injuries.

โ€œAfter that, the Hanovers made up fake debts and took Becky in. Sheโ€™s made them enough money to buy herself out 100 times over, but somehow, her debt just keeps growing. They never planned on letting her go!

โ€œTheyโ€™re only winning at these auctions because Beckyโ€™s wolf can identify gems. Youโ€™ve made it impossible for her to buy back her freedom!โ€

Becky started crying, covering her face.

โ€œYouโ€™re full of it! If you dare to slander my family again, Iโ€™ll rip your wolf out!โ€ Preston threatened.

I held up the papers and said, โ€œAlright then, Iโ€™ll just go ahead and send these to the court. The cops will be here to drag you away any minute.โ€

Preston stared at me for a few tense seconds, then gave in. โ€œDonโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

I didnโ€™t wait. I calmly placed the documents on a nearby table and said, โ€œHand over Beckyโ€™s contracts, and these papers are yours. If not, Iโ€™ll make sure itโ€™s you getting dragged out. Itโ€™s up to you.โ€

Preston clenched his jaw and stayed quiet for a long time. Finally, he looked at his assistant, yanked out the contract, and threw it down. โ€œTake it. Call it a gift!โ€

He rushed over, grabbed the papers Iโ€™d dropped, and fled in a panic.

As soon as he was gone, the whole crowdโ€™s attention shifted to my top-grade sapphire.

โ€œMs. Carson, are you putting that gem up for sale?โ€

โ€œChosen One! Sell it to me! Iโ€™m your number one fan!โ€

I smiled calmly. โ€œNope. This one is a gift.โ€

โ€œWhat?! Youโ€™re just giving it away? Whoโ€™s it for? Are they even worth it?โ€

Right then, Truman stepped through the crowd.

He gave off his strong, commanding vibe and walked straight up to the person who asked the question. He asked coldly, โ€œSo, do you think Iโ€™m not worthy of it?โ€
