Chapter 631: Hadnโt Fully Adjusted Yet
Hayleyโs POV:
I could never ignore the sadness that weighed on Virginiaโs heart. Whenever she was upset, Hera, my wolf, would become restless inside me, mirroring her emotions. Could it be because we shared a blood connection?
โWhatโs on your mind?โ I asked, still not quite used to calling Virginia โMom.โ Maybe it was just that I hadnโt fully adjusted yet. I figured it might become easier over time.
When Virginia saw me enter, she immediately stood and took my hand in hers, a bright smile spreading across her face. โYouโre back! You must be exhausted.โ
โWhat did you do today? You and Benjamin didnโt get into another argument, did you?โ
I let out a dry laugh. โYouโre bombarding me with questions. Which one should I answer first?โ
โIโm sorry,โ Virginia said, her expression shifting. Then, as if recalling something, she asked, โDid you have dinner already?โ
โI ate. Just a simple meal with Benjamin,โ I answered honestly.
There was a short silence before I spoke again. โYou seemed a bit down earlier. Whatโs going on?โ
Virginia sighed heavily, her brows furrowing. โItโs your brotherโฆ Although he was saved that day, he still canโt feel anything in his lower body.โ
โI donโt know if heโll ever walk againโฆโ
For a moment, I was stunned. Then it hit me. I actually had a brother. Since returning from Greenhill Hospital, I hadnโt seen Peter. It was something Iโd forgotten, and I hadnโt thought much about him. But now that I remembered, I realized I still needed to perform another round of needle therapy for Alanโjust to make sure there were no lingering complications. Some issues arenโt immediately apparent, and if left untreated, they could lead to severe consequences. But for now, Alan could wait.
I thought for a moment before saying, โLetโs have Peter brought over tomorrow. Iโll treat him.โ
Virginiaโs eyes widened with surprise. โReally?!โ Then her face clouded with concern. โBut last time, when you treated your father, you almost passed out. Itโs only been a few days. Are you sure youโre up for it? Michelle, please donโt overdo it.โ
โIโm fine. Iโve rested,โ I replied with a gentle smile, giving her hand an assuring pat. โItโs settled then. Have him brought here tomorrow.โ
โOkay!โ Virginia nodded vigorously, looking relieved and thankful.
โGo ahead, get some rest. Donโt push yourself too hard. Even if we canโt treat him tomorrow, itโs not the end of the world. After all these years, those top-tier Beta doctors havenโt found a solution. Your brother will understand,โ Virginia said kindly.
I bit my lip, but I didnโt respond.
Back in my room, I opened my laptop and used the program to call Claudioโs number.
โAlpha, I canโt believe youโre calling me personally. Are you that eager to save someone?โ Claudio asked, sounding surprised. He always referred to me as โAlpha,โ just like Thomas, even though he wasnโt part of the Shadow Pack.
โDid you have a fallout with the organization?โ I asked, using a voice modulator, making the voice sound like a grown manโs.
โImpossible,โ Claudio chuckled. โThe organization is my lifeblood. I wouldnโt be alive without you all! You think Iโd risk angering them for no reason?โ
Just as I thought, Claudio didnโt know anything about this. The problem must lie within the SI Organization itself.
โDid you book a flight?โ I quickly changed the subject.
โNo. Iโm sure you know too many people are looking for me here. I had to sneak back in under an alias,โ Claudio explained.
โGot it. Be careful.โ
After ending the call, I kept my gaze locked on the screen, watching the icons for the internal members of the organization who were online. It had happened multiple times alreadyโI noticed that whenever I logged in, Dominic Reid, the liaison for core members, would log in within two minutes. That couldnโt be a coincidence! A strange sense of unease settled over me, and Heraโs restless feelings confirmed that this unease wasnโt unfounded. I waited a few more minutes and, almost instinctively, opened Dominicโs chat window and sent a test message.
