Chapter 146
The incident with Miranda had caused quite a stir. Lionel and Mindy even went to Elgerson City, but returned without comment. From the rumors, the truth seemed to be that Miranda had ended her studies for a relationship with a wealthy man.
Lionel and Mindy frowned. However, Miranda remained calm. "No, we've broken up," she said.
Jenny interjected, "I heard rich people have high standards. He was probably just playing with you. It's naive to think otherwise. People like us don't usually get into high society."
She continued, "A woman's reputation is important. After all these years, didn't he offer any compensation?" Jenny alluded to the generous breakup settlements often depicted in movies, implying Miranda should have received millions.
However, Jenny's tone revealed envy at Miranda's apparent ease in acquiring wealth, especially since Miranda wasn't exceptionally beautiful and Lionel's family also benefited.
Miranda looked up sharply. "Aunt Jenny, what kind of compensation do you think I should have?"
"Money, jewelry, that sort of thing," Jenny replied.
"Enough!" Lionel slammed his hand on the table, standing up. "Jenny, we're family, but I expect more respect!"
Jenny also stood. "What's disrespectful? I'm concerned for Miranda."
"Is that your idea of concern?" Lionel asked.
"Lionel, what are you implying?"
Mindy stood, squeezing her daughter's hand. "Jenny, Lionel's point is simple: your comments are rude, inappropriate, and unfounded."
Jenny was surprised by Mindy's directness; she was usually soft-spoken. But this time, she was firm.
Seeing their united front and her own misstep, Jenny kicked Harold. "Are you just going to sit there? Aren't you going to do anything while I'm being attacked?"
Harold shrugged and continued eating. Quincey ignored the situation.
Chapter 146
Anna slammed her fork down, glaring at Lionel. "It's Christmas, and you're still at it? Jenny said some unpleasant things, but she had a point and meant well. Do you really need to make such a fuss?"
Lionel looked hurt. "Mom! Did you hear what Jenny said about her own niece? How can you side with her?"
"Jenny's words were harsh, but she made a point," Anna said. "Even regular couples get compensation after a breakup, so it's expected from someone wealthy like those from Elgerson. If they don't offer anything substantial, it feels like Miranda's been used."
"Mom, Mimi is also your granddaughter. How can you speak of her like that?" Lionel's face reddened with anger.
Mindy, on the verge of shouting, took a deep breath and turned to Lionel. "This meal has become unbearable. Lionel, let's go home." Her usual patience with Anna and George had evaporated when it came to Miranda.
"This isn't just unbearable; it's downright cold-hearted!" Lionel declared. "Mindy, Mimi, let's go!"
Lionel left the table, followed by Mindy and Miranda.
