Chapter 100
"Of course," Sam replied.
"I thought the end of the year would be the busiest time for those in the finance sector, like you," Miranda said.
Sam smiled. "That's not entirely true," he said. "It depends on who we're talking about. We're busy, but we'll always make time for those we care about. Those who don't matter well, we can't be bothered with them, even if we have free time."
Miranda hadn't yet grasped the meaning when the lights flickered, signaling a change of dance partners. Under the dim lighting, a figure propelled himself toward her.
As she exchanged places with Ingrid, Miranda saw the surprise and disbelief on Ingrid's face. The next second, someone grasped her wrist firmly, his hand domineeringly settling on her waist. Hansel smiled provocatively, subtly glancing at Sam. When he turned, his gaze met Miranda's and softened instantly.
"Mimi, are you still mad? I went to your place a few days ago, but no one answered," he said, sounding aggrieved. "If Sam hadn't been spiteful and switched your flight details, I would have found you already."
Miranda lowered her gaze. His words had no impact on her.
"Are you mad because I only found you now?" Hansel lowered his eyes to hers, his voice unconsciously gentler. He had immediately recognized Miranda and Sam when the spotlight fell on them. They'd gone to the dance floor and begun dancing; Sam's hand rested on her slender waist, his smile flashy and alluring. Occasionally, they whispered and looked into each other's eyes. Hansel was almost enraged by the sight. Who gave Sam the right to hold Miranda? In their six years together, Hansel hadn't even ballroom danced with her. So, when it was time to change partners, he'd cast Ingrid aside without hesitation.
Knowing Miranda was angry, he spoke sweetly, giving in; he wanted to coax her back. It was like countless other arguments, the only difference being he had to work harder and longer. He still believed he could persuade her.
Seeing her indifference, he felt wronged. "Mimi, are you really that heartless? Whether it's Sam or Paul, I know you're just using them to annoy me. It bothers me, and I don't want to see you with them at all."
Chapter 100
Those words they didn't sound like Hansel. Before, Miranda would have secretly felt gleeful, happy that he cared. But now, it was too late. She realized her insecurity, her constant fear and worry, her life revolving around Hansel. That's when she knew their relationship was over.
"Mimi, we've been together for six years, we've shared so much. Can you really let it go like that?"
Noticing her impassivity, Hansel tightened his grip on her hand.
Miranda frowned. "You're hurting me."
Hansel pursed his lips. "Sorry"
When the music ended, Miranda decisively pulled away. "The past is the past, and I've moved on. You should too." Recalling the partner exchange, she added, "Since you've made your choice, please be loyal. Don't disappoint every woman you're with."
She turned and left the hall, quickly disappearing into the darkness. Meanwhile, Sam danced with Ingrid, lacking the passion he'd shown with Miranda. He seemed distracted, his eyes fixed on Hansel and Miranda.
