Chapter 854
Everyone spoke up, offering comfort. Teresaโs eyes turned red again. Sometimes soft words cut deeper than knives, making tears fall even faster.
โThank you, guys. Youโre making me tear up,โ Teresa said.
โCome on, why are you crying? Weโre all old friends here. Donโt be so polite,โ Miriam said, gently wiping away Teresaโs tears.
Benny asked Teresa what she wanted to eat, then said heโd wash some fruit.
โBenny, let me give you a hand,โ Edward said as he came up behind Benny, holding a bag of cherries and strawberries.
Miriam held Teresaโs hand and told her about how sheโd gotten into an argument with Irene at Edwardโs place the other night. Teresaโs heart dropped.
โMiriam, you donโt have to worry about me next time. If Irene gives you a hard time, stand up for yourself and donโt let her get to you,โ Teresa said. She didnโt want to drag Miriam into this mess.
โGot it. And you, too,โ Miriam replied.
Miriam said seriously, โDonโt let yourself get wronged or hurt. No matter what happens, weโll always be your strongest support.โ
Then Miriam hugged Teresa tightly. Teresa hugged her back and said, โThanks, Miriam.โ
As night fell and everyone else left, Teresa watched as Lucas walked back in.
โLucas,โ she called out.
โHave your friends all left?โ Lucas asked.
โYeah, whereโs Mom? Has she gone to the airport?โ Teresa asked.
Lucas said, โShe had already boarded the plane.โ
He sat across from Teresa on the sofa, peeling an apple for her. Teresa shook her head. Sheโd already eaten a lot and couldnโt take another bite.
Lucas said, โI talked to the doctor about your situation. He told me the baby almost suffered from oxygen deprivation. What happened?! I know youโd never do anything to hurt your child.โ
โIโm sorry, this was all my fault. I just thought Iโd meet her for a short while and come right back. I didnโt think anything bad would happen,โ Teresa said.
Lucas asked gently, โWho did you go to meet, even if it was for a little while?โ
Teresa struggled to get the words out. โJonathanโs mom,โ she finally said.
โReally? If sheโs Jonathanโs mom, why were you afraid sheโd find out? I thought sheโd be as warm as Jonathan,โ Lucas said.
โYouโre wrong. Jonathanโs mom is not a warm person at all,โ Teresa replied.
Teresa couldnโt hold it in anymore. She finally let out all her fear and anxiety about Irene to Lucas. She also told him about how Irene threatened to fight her for custody of Mike.
โHow could she do that?โ Lucas said, shocked. โShe threatened you with money to force you to give up custody of Mike?โ
โYeah, I turned her down,โ Teresa said, her voice steady and unwavering.
โSince having Mike, itโs been my duty as his mom. Iโve made mistakes, and life gets hard, but Iโd never abandon him, let alone treat him like something to sell,โ she said firmly.
But Irene had crushed her, making her feel worthless. No matter what Teresa did or said, Irene never believed her, and she had no idea how to earn Ireneโs approval.
Seeing Teresa bury her face in her knees, hiding her pain, Lucas gently stroked her head, heart aching. โDonโt cry, Teresa. You donโt need her approval. No oneโs taking Mike from you.โ
โBut Lucas, Iโm scared sheโll take my child away,โ Teresa whispered, her voice shaking.
For three years, she had raised Mike all by herself, enduring more hardships than she could count.
Teresa believed she could handle anything and stay strong, but some things still broke through her defenses, reopening old wounds that never healed, leaving them raw and bleeding again.
Lucas couldnโt help it. Tears also slid down his cheeks, his heart aching for Teresa.
Lucas thought to himself, โJonathan has no idea about any of this.โ
