Chapter 848
Irene could only keep praying to her late husband, begging that Teresa wouldnโt die. She had only messed with Teresaโs company a little, and Jonathan already wanted to skin her alive. If Teresa died because of her, Irene couldnโt even imagine what Jonathan would do to her.
She was getting old now, and she was terrified Jonathan would abandon her, and afraid heโd end up hating her.
Finally, the red light outside the emergency room went out.
Irene hurried over, flustered. โDoctor, how is she? She didnโt die, did she?โ she pressed.
The doctor took off his mask and said, โFortunately, she was brought in just in time. The pregnant womanโs life was saved.โ
โReally?โ Irene let out a sigh of relief, murmuring to herself, โThank goodness, the pregnant womanโs safe.โ But then she froze, her eyes widening in shock. Then she added, โWait. What did you say? Pregnant woman?โ
Irene thought, โTeresa already had Michael. How could she possibly be pregnant again?โ
Irene stared at the doctor in utter disbelief and asked, โDoctor, what are you saying? Are you telling me sheโs pregnant?โ
The doctor glanced at Irene, looking puzzled. โYou didnโt know? Whatโs your relationship to the patient?โ the doctor asked.
โIโm her mother-in-law.โ
โSeriously? Youโre her mother-in-law, and you had no idea your daughter-in-law is almost seven months pregnant?โ
Another blow hit Irene hard. She thought, โSeven months pregnant? How could that be? No wonder she seemed so off today. Her face was so pale, sweat beading on her forehead like she might faint. Butโฆโ
She hadnโt even noticed Teresaโs belly. She still looked slim, let alone someone seven months pregnant.
The doctor explained, โSheโs not in any immediate danger right now. Weโll do a thorough check-up on her.โ
Irene snapped out of it and said, โSo when can I see her? I need to talk to her.โ
โOnce the check-up is done, you can see her,โ the doctor said and then left.
Teresa slowly woke to white walls and the sharp scent of disinfectant. Alone and groggy, it hit her. She was in a hospital.
When she was pregnant with Michael, life was quiet and hospital visits were rare. But this time, she seemed to be there constantly.
Teresa placed her hand over her belly and murmured, โMy baby, you have to be alright.โ
โDoctor,โ Teresa called out weakly when the gynecologist walked in. She struggled to sit up, bracing herself on the bed. Then she asked, โIs my baby okay?โ
The doctor stepped closer and replied, โYouโre lucky. If your mother-in-law hadnโt brought you in when she did, you could have lost the baby.โ
Teresa froze and asked, โMy mother-in-law? Which one? Irene?โ
โI donโt know how many mothers-in-law youโve got, but you wore a waist trainer at seven months pregnant. If you hadnโt come in when you did, your baby couldโve suffocated. Were you trying to risk your childโs life?โ
Teresa lowered her head, cold sweat running down her back as the doctor lectured her.
โIโm sorry, I didnโt know. I never thought the consequences would be this serious.โ
โIt is that serious, you know? How could you be so careless as a mom?โ The doctor said with a sigh.
โYouโre still young. Luckily, both you and your baby are tough enough to make it through.โ
โIโm sorry,โ Teresa apologized again, both to the doctor and silently to the baby inside her.
โJust get some rest for now. Once your test results are out, Iโll come back and talk to you. And make sure to let your husband know. Get ready to stay in the hospital.โ
The doctor hurried out. Teresa was still rattled, glancing at her belly in fear. This time, it was her fault. She had almost killed her child.
โWhat about next time?โ she thought, her heart pounding. โWill I be this lucky again?โ Teresa didnโt even dare to imagine it. Another chill of fear crept over her.
Before Teresa could get up, Irene burst in. Their eyes met, tense and unyielding. Without the waist trainer, Teresaโs baby bump was visible. There was no hiding it now.
Irene exploded and pressed, โYouโre pregnant.โ
Of all people, Irene was the last person Teresa wanted to tell about her pregnancy, but now she knew.
She didnโt deny it. She couldnโt hide it anymore. There was just no way.
โYouโre tangled up with Jonathan while carrying another manโs bastard. You have no shame,โ Irene snapped.
Teresa was stunned. As Teresa looked at her in confusion and disbelief, Irene stood over her with a proud, condescending glare.
โYou should thank me for getting you admitted and saving your baby, even though youโre no longer my daughter-in-law. Iโm not doing this for you. I donโt want Jonathan blaming me or you playing the victim later.โ
Teresa suddenly let out a laugh. Seeing how calm and composed Teresa looked, Irene started to panic and asked, โWhat are you laughing at?โ
But Teresa just kept smiling. Irene snapped, โStop laughing. Whatโs so funny?โ
โIโm laughing at you. Youโre unbelievably stupid,โ Teresa said, her voice full of scorn.
โWho are you calling stupid, you rude little brat?โ Irene shot back.
Irene whipped out her phone, found Jonathanโs number, and hovered her finger over the call button.
โIโm sure Jonathan has no idea youโre pregnant. Iโm telling him right now, so he can see what kind of two-faced cheater you are.โ
Teresa remained calm and composed. โGo ahead, call him,โ she said, cool as ice without a trace of panic.
Seeing how sure Teresa looked, Irene squinted, getting the feeling that something wasnโt right.
โHow can you be so calm? Arenโt you afraid Jonathan will find out youโre carrying some other manโs bastard? Heโd never raise a kid thatโs not his,โ Irene snapped.
โThatโs enough. Are you done yet?โ Teresa shot back, cutting her off.
โYou keep calling the baby a bastard. Are you saying your son is just some random guy off the street?โ Teresa shot back, her voice cold and mocking.
Irene froze. She glared at Teresa, eyes wide. โWhat do you mean by that?โ she asked.
Teresa placed her hand firmly on her belly and added, โLet me make this clear. This baby is Jonathanโs child.โ
โWhat did you just say?โ Irene asked, her voice trembling.
โNo, thatโs not possible,โ Irene thought, her mind spinning. She blurted out, her face twisting in disbelief.
Ireneโs fingers twitched with nerves, her face contorted in anger as she pointed at Teresa. โIf that baby were Jonathanโs, he wouldโve told his family. No way heโd keep it a secret,โ Irene said.
That was why Irene was convinced this was Teresaโs child with another man.
โI was the one who told him not to say anything. You can come after me all you want, but I wonโt ever give you a chance to hurt my baby,โ Teresa said firmly.
โYouโre being ridiculous. Why would I ever hurt Jonathanโs child?โ Irene shot back, her voice rising.
โBecause I donโt trust you as you donโt trust me,โ Teresa replied coldly.
Ireneโs face turned green with fury, and she was about to keep interrogating Teresa. The next second, on the other end of her phone, a cold voice rang out.
