Evelyn took a deep breath and said calmly, “So you got involved with Philip just to get back at me.”

“That’s right,” Peggy shot back, staring hard at Evelyn. “Why is it that my life is miserable, but you get to be so happy? I wanted you to be miserable, too! Only then could I feel better about myself.

“To be honest, I was just jealous of you! I admit it. I was jealous of you. Jealous of your good life, jealous that you were always the better one since we were kids, jealous that you beat me at everything…”

Suddenly, Peggy broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. She had destroyed her own life, all because she was jealous of another woman. How ridiculous.

Evelyn glanced at the white hairs on Peggy’s head and couldn’t help but feel a surge of emotion. No matter how well she took care of herself, she just couldn’t fight the traces left by decades gone by.

After all those years of jealousy, this was how Peggy ended up. In the end, there were no winners in this game.

Evelyn said, “Honestly, there’s nothing left in my life for you to envy. You switched the two kids for so many years, and I was kept completely in the dark.

“Philip was always a jerk, and after I divorced him, I remarried–only to end up with another loser who took everything I had and threw me out.

“Now I’ve got nothing, wandering from place to place. The only thing I have left is my kids by my side. Other than that, I’m really no different from you.”

Peggy lifted her tear-filled, blurry eyes and gazed at Evelyn. In that moment, the two women looked at each other in calm silence, as if the years between them had simply melted away.

Evelyn let out a sigh. “Our feud ended up hurting two innocent children. This is the sin we’ve brought upon ourselves.”

Peggy burst into tears uncontrollably. “I’m sorry… I’m so, so sorry…” At last, she finally let out the words she’d kept buried in her heart all these years.

She said that the reason she switched the children back then wasn’t just because she couldn’t stand the thought of raising her ex-husband’s child. It was also because she wanted to make up for the regret she still felt about what happened to her brother.

“Your brother?” Evelyn was puzzled.

Peggy said, “Do you remember I had a little brother?”

Evelyn nodded. “You mean Patrick? I remember when he was a kid, he fell into a well. By the time they pulled him out, he was already gone.”

As she said this, Peggy’s breathing grew rapid.

Peggy nodded while crying. “It was me. I was the one who did it.”
