Chapter 819

Later, she married a man she thought was a good catch, hoping marriage would change her fate. Then her family would finally respect her and stop looking down on her.

But she ended up with the wrong guy, a gambler who abused her and even tried to pimp her out to another man just to get ahead.

That was when she realized that, in the end, men were all the same. She couldnโ€™t take it anymore, so she divorced him. But it was only after the divorce that she realized she was pregnant.

She was carrying the child of the man who had destroyed her life, and it was a girl. The hatred she felt was overwhelming.

She wanted nothing more than to get rid of the baby, but by the time she found out, it was already too late.

Recalling all of this, Peggy gave a bitter laugh. โ€œI remember back then, you had just married Philip, and your marriage seemed so perfect. Watching you two together made me hate you so much.

โ€œWhy did you get to have a happy marriage? Why was I always the one who came up short? Why, after all these years, was I never as good as you?โ€

Evelyn took a deep breath and said calmly, โ€œSo you got involved with Philip just to get back at me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Peggy shot back, staring hard at Evelyn. โ€œWhy is it that my life is miserable, but you get to be so happy? I wanted you to be miserable, too! Only then could I feel better about myself.

โ€œTo be honest, I was just jealous of you! I admit it. I was jealous of you. Jealous of your good life, jealous that you were always the better one since we were kids, jealous that you beat me at everythingโ€ฆโ€

Suddenly, Peggy broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. She had destroyed her own life, all because she was jealous of another woman. How ridiculous.

Evelyn glanced at the white hairs on Peggyโ€™s head and couldnโ€™t help but feel a surge of emotion. No matter how well she took care of herself, she just couldnโ€™t fight the traces left by decades gone by.

After all those years of jealousy, this was how Peggy ended up. In the end, there were no winners in this game.

Evelyn said, โ€œHonestly, thereโ€™s nothing left in my life for you to envy. You switched the two kids for so many years, and I was kept completely in the dark.

โ€œPhilip was always a jerk, and after I divorced him, I remarriedโ€“only to end up with another loser who took everything I had and threw me out.

โ€œNow Iโ€™ve got nothing, wandering from place to place. The only thing I have left is my kids by my side. Other than that, Iโ€™m really no different from you.โ€

Peggy lifted her tear-filled, blurry eyes and gazed at Evelyn. In that moment, the two women looked at each other in calm silence, as if the years between them had simply melted away.

Evelyn let out a sigh. โ€œOur feud ended up hurting two innocent children. This is the sin weโ€™ve brought upon ourselves.โ€

Peggy burst into tears uncontrollably. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆ Iโ€™m so, so sorryโ€ฆโ€ At last, she finally let out the words sheโ€™d kept buried in her heart all these years.

She said that the reason she switched the children back then wasnโ€™t just because she couldnโ€™t stand the thought of raising her ex-husbandโ€™s child. It was also because she wanted to make up for the regret she still felt about what happened to her brother.

โ€œYour brother?โ€ Evelyn was puzzled.

Peggy said, โ€œDo you remember I had a little brother?โ€

Evelyn nodded. โ€œYou mean Patrick? I remember when he was a kid, he fell into a well. By the time they pulled him out, he was already gone.โ€

As she said this, Peggyโ€™s breathing grew rapid.

Evelyn thought, โ€˜No wayโ€ฆ Could it beโ€ฆ

Peggy nodded while crying. โ€œIt was me. I was the one who did it.โ€
