โYeah, thatโs what Jennifer said,โ Donald replied.
โSince when can a grandma just swoop in and take a kid without the parentsโ say-so? Do you really think thatโs possible?โ Jonathan shot back.
Donald licked his lips and said, โJonathan, you know better than anyone how forceful your mom can be. Jenniferโs worries arenโt exactly baseless.โ
Jonathan frowned. After Jennifer had faked countless paternity test reports, it made him seriously question what kind of person she really was. Deep down, he didnโt really believe what Jennifer said about Irene taking Mike away. He was more inclined to think Jennifer was just trying to pass the buck.
Even though Jennifer had apologized, everything that had happened between them made it impossible for Jonathan to truly trust her.
โThereโs absolutely no way my mom is going to take Mike away. Thatโs just impossible. Anyway, Iโm not seeing you out. You can leave now,โ Jonathan said.
With that, Jonathan turned and headed back to the ward. Donald didnโt say anything else. Heโd already delivered Jenniferโs messageโthat was enough.
When Jonathan came back, Teresa asked him, โWhat did Donald say to you that you couldnโt say in front of me?โ
โItโs nothing,โ Jonathan replied. โJust rest up and donโt worry about anything.โ
Teresa said, โMy mom just called. She said my brother showed signs of waking up today, and the doctor thinks heโll be awake soon.โ
โReally?โ Jonathanโs eyebrows relaxed a bit. โIโll try to find some time to go to Jarisburg and visit your brother.โ
โItโs fine. Arenโt you going on a business trip to Eleneburg tomorrow?โ Teresa asked.
โI pushed my schedule back a few days. Itโs not urgent. Did you tell your mom about Jennifer jumping off the building?โ Jonathan asked.
โOf course not. Iโm not stupid. If I told my mom, sheโd probably pass out. And you shouldnโt tell her either,โ Teresa said.
Jonathan nodded.
Jennifer headed home with Donald. Once they got home, Jennifer sat down on the couch. Donald took a seat across from her. For some reason, things felt a little awkward between them, and neither of them really knew what to say.
โYou must be exhausted. Why donโt you get some rest in the bedroom? Iโll go take a shower first,โ Donald said.
โSure,โ Jennifer replied softly.
Donald had stayed up all night. He went straight to the bathroom for a shower. Sitting alone on the couch and listening to the sound of water splashing in the bathroom, Jennifer zoned out.
Jennifer suddenly thought of something. She got up and went to the bedroom, starting to search everywhere for something. When Donald came out of the shower, he saw Jennifer digging around the room, clearly looking for something.
Chapter 796
โWhat are you looking for?โ he asked.
โThe abortion report,โ Jennifer replied.
โWhat?โ Donald was taken aback, not quite getting it.
Then Jennifer found the abortion report from the day of her car accident. It was the report she had hidden away. She had planned never to show him. Now, she finally came clean and handed it to him, letting him see for himself.
โI was once pregnant. Itโs true,โ Jennifer said.
Donald took the report, stunned. He stared at the words as water dripped from his hair and splashed onto the paper. His hands shook as he pored over every single word. Eight weeks pregnant, and then the baby was gone. He shouted inwardly, โWhy?!โ
Jennifer met Donaldโs pained, questioning eyes. She held back her own hurt and said, โDo you remember when I was busy trying to get promoted to department head? I lied to you and said I wasnโt pregnant.โ
โYeah, and then?โ Donald pressed.
โAnd thenโฆโ Jennifer fell silent for a few seconds. Then she made up a lie, โBack then, I was blinded by ambition and didnโt want a baby to become an obstacle in my career."
