Chapter 789
Her fingers were shaking uncontrollably, and all sorts of terrible images flashed through her mind. Jonathan reached over and held her hand, trying to steady her, but Teresa still looked absolutely pale.
She suddenly turned to Jonathan and said, โItโs really bad. Jennifer thinks Donald cheated on her. Now she probably feels like life isnโt worth living anymore. Her phoneโs off. She might actually do something crazy.โ
โItโs okay. She wonโt do anything to hurt herself,โ Jonathan tried to reassure her.
โNoโฆโ Teresa sobbed. โShe will. I never shouldโve said those things to my mom at the hospital. I didnโt know she was coming. If anything happens to her, her death will be on me. I donโt want to be the reason someone gets hurt.โ
โIt wonโt come to that,โ Jonathan said, pulling Teresa into his arms and rubbing her shoulder comfortingly. His chin brushed softly against her hair as he murmured, โTrust me, sheโll be fine.โ
Jonathan could feel Teresa trembling in his embrace, so he pulled her even closer. The whole journey was pure torment.
At last, they returned to Nareigh. After getting the call, Donald rushed toward the airport, shouting as he ran, โJonathan! Teresa!โ He was drenched in sweat, gasping for breath.
Teresa hurried up to him and asked, โDid you find her? Did you find Jennifer?โ
Donald shook his head, letting out a frustrated sigh. โIโve checked everywhere she might goโher favorite restaurants, cafes, shopping malls. I went to all of them, but I still couldnโt find her.โ
Teresaโs heart skipped a beat. โDid you call the police? Didnโt I tell you to call the police?!โ
Donald looked even more helpless. โI went to the police station, but since Jennifer hasnโt been missing for 24 hours yet, they wonโt open a case.โ
Teresaโs heart sank even deeper. She tried calling Jennifer again, but her phone was still turned off.
Jonathan glanced at Teresa and gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. โIโll make some calls and get some people to help look for her. Donโt worry.โ
Teresa thanked Jonathan as he walked off to make the calls.
Donald, feeling a bit more at ease, said, โJonathan knows a lot of people. Iโm sure weโll find Jennifer soon!โ
Teresa frowned, afraid that something might happen to Jennifer before they even found her. Suddenly, she remembered something.
She said, โWait, did you check the parks and lakes nearby? What about Nareigh Bay? Or the city moat? What if she jumped into the river? Did you check these places?โ
Donald shook his head.
Teresa said, โThen letโs split up and check all those places, just in case!โ
โOkay!โ Donald agreed.
Meanwhile, Jonathan finished his call and joined Teresa as they headed toward the city moat to search for Jennifer.
As they walked along the bridge, Teresa gripped the railing and peered down into the water below. Jonathan held her hand firmly, afraid she might accidentally fall.
โDonโt worry,โ Jonathan said softly. โIโve already reached out to a lot of people. As soon as they find out where Jennifer is, theyโll call me right away.โ
โThanks. Iโve made you worry again,โ Teresa said as she stared down at the water. Her mind was racing with terrible thoughts, โWhat if Jennifer has already done something irreversible?โ
โItโs going to be okay,โ Jonathan reassured her and held her hand tightly. But he was also frowning worriedly.
Every second felt like an eternity. Nearly half of Nareigh had been turned upside down, but Jennifer was still nowhere to be found.
Teresa didnโt even have the appetite to eat. She slumped in the car, lowering her head worriedly.
It was already 7 p.m. Suddenly, Jonathanโs phone rang.
The caller said, โMr. Lynn, I just spotted a woman in white standing on the rooftop of one of those abandoned high-rises in the development zone.
โIโm not sure if sheโs the one youโre looking for, but I snapped a photo. Iโll send it to you right now.โ
