โJust you wait. Lucas, letโs go!โ Peggy snarled.
โHe needs to eat first. Look at him!โ Evelyn insisted urgently. Fumbling with the packaging, she twisted open a water bottle and pressed it into Lucasโs hands. โLucas, drink. Your health comes first,โ she urged, voice thick with concern.
โThank you, Ms. Davis,โ Lucas murmured, drawing strength from her unexpected kindness. He took small bites, color slowly returning to his face.
โTake your time,โ Evelyn said, gently patting his shoulder, afraid he might choke.
Peggy strode over, shoving Evelynโs hand aside. โHeโs my son. Mind your own business.โ She jabbed a finger at Lucas. โLucas, get up. Weโre leaving. Dragging this out changes nothing. Remember who you areโmy sonโand you will obey me.โ Her voice dripped venom.
Jennifer froze, struck by chilling familiarity. Watching Peggyโs vicious dominance, she saw a grotesque reflection of her past behavior towards Teresaโthe same demanding control, the same insistence on blind obedience. Sharp guilt and self-reproach washed over her, fists clenching at her sides.
Lucas stood up, swaying slightly. โMs. Davis, Teresa. It was good to meet you. Iโm fine now. Thank you.โ He offered a formal, mournful bow. A final goodbye.
Teresa opened her mouth, but words failed her. What a shame, she thought, heart heavy. If only Lucas were Evelynโs son, she could have proudly called him brother. But now, she could only watch helplessly as he walked away with Peggy.
Evelyn sighed heavily, tears welling as she looked away. โLetโs go,โ she whispered, voice thick. โThat poor boyโฆ but Iโm not his mother. Thereโs nothing I can do.โ
Teresa squeezed her shoulder. โItโs not your fault,โ she murmured.
Jennifer remained composed. โThis is the best outcome,โ she stated calmly. โThere was no mix-up. My birth mother is out there, and I will find her.โ She held an unshakeable belief: her real mother would be a woman of strength and integrityโnothing like Peggy.
โYouโll find her,โ Teresa said softly. โThereโs nothing more here. Itโs time to go back to Nareigh.โ
Evelyn sighed again. โYes, time to go home. Isabelโs probably missing me. Wellโฆ all that for nothing.โ
Teresa pulled out her phone. โIโll book flights for tomorrow. Jennifer, what about you?โ
โMineโs already booked. Donโt worry about it,โ Jennifer replied.
Teresa didnโt push it.
Back at Jonathanโs villa, Evelyn looked at Teresa. โTell Jonathan. The results are inโidentical to the first test. He needs to know.โ
โI texted him,โ Teresa replied. โNo answer yet. Heโs probably busy.โ
Evelyn sighed. โAll Jonathanโs effortโฆ for nothing. Just false hope.โ
Teresa looked down, heart heavy. โYes. Just false hope."
Night fell in the hotel room, Lucas finished packing. He tore his Film Academy audition notice to shreds and dropped them in the bin. His dreams were dead. Whatever job awaited him wouldnโt be what he loved. Nothing mattered. Life or deathโit made no difference.
