Chapter 765
Michael giggled, shaking his head. “Mr. Lime said it in his mind. I heard it!”
Teresa cleared her throat and quickly changed the subject. “Well, you guys should get some rest. You’ve had a long day, right?”
“It’s alright,” Jonathan said, taking the phone and heading toward the study. As he walked, the screen wobbled, and Teresa could only catch the outline of his face in profile.
“Is everything okay back home?” Jonathan asked as he entered the study, his eyes fixed on her pale face.
Teresa shook her head. What could possibly be wrong? she thought.
“The babysitter said she saw a drunk woman come looking for you. Who was it?” Jonathan asked.
“Just ignore it,” Teresa said lightly.
If I told him it was Jennifer, would he get upset? Besides, Jennifer wants to divorce Donald. Will he try to talk them out of it? Forget it. Better not stick my nose into other people’s business, she thought to herself.
“You should get some rest. I’m going to bed too,” Teresa said.
“Hold on,” Jonathan said. “Are you really alright? You just don’t look very happy to me.”
Teresa had been forcing a smile when she talked to Michael earlier, but now her face looked heavy and tired. After a long day at work and all the drama with Jennifer, the bad mood rubbed off on her, too.
All day, she’d been wondering if Jennifer would break down when she found out her birth mother was actually the other woman. But in the end, that was their family’s business. It wasn’t something she could talk to Jonathan about.
“I’m really okay,” Teresa said, forcing a smile, hiding all the stress she was feeling inside.
Jonathan frowned. “Why don’t you go take a shower and try not to think too much about it?”
“I’m not thinking about anything. I’m fine,” Teresa insisted. “When are you and Michael coming back?”
“Tomorrow afternoon,” Jonathan replied.
“Alright,” Teresa murmured wearily, hanging up the phone and going to take a shower.
It was only six in the evening, but she just couldn’t fall asleep by herself. Maybe she’d gotten too used to having Jonathan around.
At first, she’d been against him moving in, and the two of them usually slept in separate rooms. Still, every night, he’d be there to tuck Michael in before bed.
But tonight, with Jonathan gone and Michael not home either, she was left all alone in the house.
It was a little after ten when Teresa suddenly heard a noise outside. She jolted in bed, just as she was about to lie down to sleep.
Then she stepped out of her room and caught sight of Jonathan, completely stunned. He unlocked the door with the spare key, looking like he’d just come in from a long trip.
“Why are you back?” Teresa blurted out, her mind spinning. Am I dreaming right now? she thought.
Jonathan didn’t have any luggage with him. He’d come back empty-handed. He looked around and said, “I was worried something might have happened to you, so I came back to check on you.”
Teresa felt warmth spread through her chest. He came all the way back from Jarisburg just for me? she thought.
She was about to pour him a cup of coffee when he added, “You shouldn’t let your mind wander too much. The little one inside will get worried, too.”
Teresa thought, Figures, he’s really just worried about the baby after all.
After all, she’d kept things about Michael from him, and he was furious about it. He’d said he could accept the way things were between them now. She thought, But honestly, isn’t he just being nice to me for the sake of the baby?
She swapped the coffee for plain water and set it on the table for him. “It must’ve been a hassle for you to come all the way back. Your baby is perfectly safe. What about Mike? Didn’t he come back with you?”
