Chapter 750

As Jennifer walked in, she found herself thinking, "If I really was switched at birth by accident, itโ€™s fine. Maybe my mom never even knew. Maybe all these years, she had no idea her daughter was out there, suffering all alone."

โ€œCan I help you?โ€ The only person on the first floor was a receptionist, and she spoke in Clusian.

Jennifer snapped out of her thoughts and replied, โ€œOh, Iโ€™m looking for Dr. Peggy Davis. She works here, right?โ€

The receptionist shook her head. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t work here anymore.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Jennifer was taken aback. โ€œWhere did she go?โ€

โ€œHer son moved back to Clusia, and she went with him,โ€ the receptionist explained.

Jenniferโ€™s face went pale. "She went back to Clusia? Clusiaโ€™s so big. Where could she be?"

The receptionist, noticing Jenniferโ€™s anxious expression, asked curiously, โ€œWhatโ€™s your relationship with Dr. Davis?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m her friendโ€™s daughter. Do you know where she is now?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure. She left about half a month ago.โ€

Jennifer bit her lip, feeling a wave of disappointment. She had finally tracked down her motherโ€™s address, only to find out she wasnโ€™t there. "Why does everything have to be so difficult for me?" she thought.

Jennifer took the fastest flight back to Nareigh. Instead of going to the hospital, she dragged her tired body home first.

The living room was pitch dark, and she figured Donald must not be back yet. But as soon as she flicked on the light, she nearly jumped out of her skinโ€“there he was, sitting silently on the couch.

โ€œDonald.โ€ Jennifer set her bag down and walked over, puzzled. โ€œYouโ€™re home? Why are you sitting here in the dark?โ€

Donald looked up at her, and the disappointment and sadness in his eyes hit Jennifer like a punch. She hadnโ€™t seen him look at her like that in agesโ€“the last time was when he found out the truth about Michael.

Jennifer reached up and touched her face. โ€œWhy are you staring at me like that? Do I have something on my face or what?โ€

Donald handed her a stack of papers from the table. It was the form sheโ€™d used to hide Teresaโ€™s delivery records back when she worked at another hospital.

Jenniferโ€™s eyes flickered, but she kept her cool and set the papers down. โ€œWho gave you these?โ€

โ€œJonathan,โ€ Donald said. โ€œHe told me Teresa was too scared to tell him the truth about Mike because of you. You threatened her, didnโ€™t you? You used your future to pressure her into keeping quiet, right?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t threaten her,โ€ Jennifer said coldly, her face expressionless. โ€œShe made that choice herself.โ€

โ€œReally? You were scared Jonathan would come after you and youโ€™d get fired, so you kept using that to threaten Teresa, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t. I stopped her from telling the truth because I was trying to protect her. Irene the witch is pure evil. I was terrified sheโ€™d try to take Mike away from Teresa. I was just trying to help her.โ€

Donald let out a bitter laugh. โ€œIf you could come up with a better excuse, maybe Iโ€™d understand. But this? Whoโ€™s going to believe that? Irene is Mikeโ€™s grandmother. What right does she have to take Mike from his mother?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know Irene,โ€ Jennifer shot back. โ€œSheโ€™s nothing like your momโ€”sheโ€™s downright vicious. If it werenโ€™t for her, Teresa and I wouldโ€™ve been terrified.โ€

Donald nodded. โ€œAlright, even if what you said is true, why did you have to meddle in other peopleโ€™s business in the first place?โ€

Jennifer clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms. She never wanted Donald to find out about this, but now he knewโ€“she felt like there was nowhere left to hide.

Her face twisted with anger. โ€œDonโ€™t listen to Jonathan. Heโ€™s just like his mother. Theyโ€™re both a curse, ruining our family.โ€

Donald shut his eyes, disappointment washing over him. โ€œJonathan couldโ€™ve come straight to you and held you accountable, or even taken you to court for faking those medical records. But he didnโ€™t.

โ€œBecause youโ€™re my wife, he didnโ€™t go over my head to deal with you. He gave me that much respect, and now you call him a curse on our family? Do you even realize just how wrong you are?โ€

Jenniferโ€™s eyes brimmed with tears. โ€œPlease, Donald, just stop,โ€ she begged, feeling awful.

She was no longer a Johnston, had sold her car, and after flying all the way to Cerein, she still hadnโ€™t found her mother. The journey left her exhausted and sorrowful. She wished he could comfort her instead of blaming her like this.

โ€œI told you, just give me a little more time. Iโ€™ll resign on my own,โ€ she said, her voice weary.

โ€œThereโ€™s no more time.โ€ Donald grabbed her wrist, his voice firm. โ€œMove now. Iโ€™m going with you to resign, and youโ€™re never going to be a doctor again.โ€

Jennifer yanked her hand away, frustrated. โ€œI said Iโ€™d handle it myself. Donโ€™t force me,โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one forcing me, Jennifer,โ€ Donald shot back. โ€œThis time, I donโ€™t care what you think. Iโ€™m going with you, and weโ€™re quitting together.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Jennifer blurted out, her voice rising. โ€œYouโ€™re quitting too? You didnโ€™t do anything wrong. Why would you quit?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m too ashamed to even show my face at that hospital,โ€ Donald said. โ€œWalking away from this career is fine to me.โ€

Anyway, his transfer to another hospital and promotion had only come about because Jonathan pulled some strings. He figured even if he lost his job, it would be no more than he deserved.

Jennifer broke down. โ€œWhy are you quitting? I already sold my car. If you lose your job as well, how are we supposed to get by?โ€

โ€œWe can always find another job,โ€ Donald said, his tone resolute. โ€œI just donโ€™t want to see you keep being so stubborn about this.

โ€œDo you think clinging to that hospital is going to magically fix things? It wonโ€™t. The longer you stay, the worse things will get, and weโ€™ll completely lose our dignity.โ€

Jennifer bit down hard on her lip, saying nothing. Her already pale face turned even whiter, and her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles cracked.

Donald backed down a little. โ€œFine, I wonโ€™t quit. But youโ€™re resigning today. No more excuses.โ€

Jennifer still didnโ€™t budge, her fists clamping down tighter.

โ€œWeโ€™re leaving, now.โ€ Donald started peeling her fingers off the wall, one by one.

โ€œIโ€™m not going.โ€

โ€œYou have to go today. You donโ€™t even have the face to stay there anymore. You donโ€™t deserve that job.โ€

โ€œNo. Why are you all forcing me? Why?โ€ Jennifer cried out. Finally, her strength gave out, and she fainted.

Donald rushed over and caught her in his arms. โ€œJennifer!โ€ he called, panicking. Only then did he notice just how pale she was.

It hit himโ€“Jennifer was still pregnant. Without hesitation, he scooped her up and rushed her to the hospital. Guilt crashed over him so intensely that he could barely hold back tears. If anything happened to the baby, heโ€™d never forgive himself.
