Listen to this chapter:

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not true,โ€ Jennifer murmured. Under Miriamโ€™s merciless accusations and the collapse of her inner defenses, she completely fell apart. She crumpled to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, all her carefully built facade shattered.

โ€œMiriam, letโ€™s go. Weโ€™ll talk about this at home,โ€ Teresa said. Family matters should stay private, and right now, both Miriam and Jennifer were too emotional.

Jonathan grabbed Teresaโ€™s arm, stopping her from leaving. He turned to Miriam. โ€œKeep going. What else did she do to Teresa?โ€ He was desperate to know everything.

Miriam took a deep breath. โ€œThereโ€™s more to why Teresa went to Everport and refused to come back to Nareigh. Jennifer kept bothering and pressuring Teresa. Teresa was totally burned out and just wanted to escape the whole mess.โ€

โ€œTeresa actually wanted to tell you about Mike a long time ago, but this so-called sister wouldnโ€™t let her. She kept using the title of โ€˜big sisterโ€™ to guilt-trip Teresa over and over, but sheโ€™s not even her sister!

โ€œShe keeps accusing others of being shady, but she was actually the one with bad intentions. She just canโ€™t stand to see Teresa happy. With her around, Teresa will never have a momentโ€™s peace.โ€

Jonathan looked at Teresa and asked, โ€œIs what Miriam said true?โ€

โ€œThis is family stuff. Iโ€™m not talking about it with you,โ€ Teresa said stubbornly. She didnโ€™t want Jonathan to know how tough things had been for her. She turned to Miriam. โ€œQuit talking. Letโ€™s go.โ€

Jonathan seemed to catch that last bit of pride in Teresaโ€™s eyes. He clenched his fists, but in the end, he chose to respect her and let her keep her dignity.

โ€œIโ€™ll let you leave for now,โ€ he said. โ€œI promise, not a single word of what happened today will get out of my company. You can all rest assured.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ Teresa said from the bottom of her heart.

โ€œGo home and cool off. Iโ€™ll check in with you later,โ€ Jonathan said, then quickly arranged a ride for Teresa.

Once everyone left, Jonathan returned to his office. His mind was spinning, replaying Miriamโ€™s account of Jenniferโ€™s threats against Teresa.

โ€˜If Jennifer isnโ€™t Teresaโ€™s sister, then who is she? Is she getting close to Teresa for some hidden reason?โ€™ Jonathan thought to himself, dead set on looking into Jennifer.

Meanwhile, Miriam got home first, and Teresa got out of the car right after her. She told Miriam not to pay any attention to what Jennifer said. Miriam had calmed down by now. As long as there was nothing between her and Teresa, she didnโ€™t care about Jenniferโ€™s nonsense. โ€œBut why didnโ€™t you tell me you were pregnant? How many months along are you?โ€ Miriam asked.

โ€œItโ€™s only been a few months,โ€ Teresa said, lowering her head.

โ€œReally?โ€ Miriam frowned. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on in that head of yours? You even kept it from me. Am I still your bestie or not?โ€

Teresa stayed silent. After a while, she said quietly, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Miriam.โ€

Miriam couldnโ€™t stand hearing Teresa apologize, though she was hurt that Teresa had kept her pregnancy a secret. But seeing Teresa dealing with so much already while pregnant, as her best friend, Miriam didnโ€™t want to pile on any extra pressure.

Chapter 746

โ€œHonestly, if you told me you were pregnant earlier, I never would have looked into Jennifer. I didnโ€™t want to make things messier for you right now. Maybe Iโ€™m the one who should apologize. I stuck my nose where I shouldnโ€™t have and made you even more uneasy during your pregnancy,โ€ Miriam said.

Teresa patted Miriamโ€™s shoulder. โ€œYou didnโ€™t do anything wrong. Letโ€™s not blame each other. Jennifer isnโ€™t my sisterโ€“even if we donโ€™t crack this today, weโ€™ll figure it out sooner or later, right?โ€

Miriam nodded. โ€œIโ€™m gonna head out. Call me if you need anything.โ€

Once Miriam was out of sight, Teresa turned and got back in the car. Now, there was only her and Jennifer.

For the entire ride, Jennifer just stared out the window in silence. Gone was the hysteria from earlierโ€“now she seemed to have moved into a cold, quiet calm.

Teresa didnโ€™t say a word either. Both of them were lost in their own thoughts.

When they arrived at the hotel, Evelyn was already there, waiting.

Jenniferโ€™s face was dark. She stared at Evelyn like she was facing her worst enemy.

โ€œHannah,โ€ Evelyn called out, her voice strained and heavy.

โ€œDonโ€™t call me that. Iโ€™m not Hannah, who doesnโ€™t even exist,โ€ Jennifer snapped. โ€œSo who am I? What happened back then?โ€

โ€œCalm down, Hannah.โ€ Evelyn swallowed hard. โ€œWhen I gave birth to you, my cousin was also in the same hospital having her baby. I suspect that our babies were switched.โ€

Jennifer took a deep breath and nodded. โ€œAlright, then tell meโ€“whatโ€™s your cousinโ€™s name? Where is she now?โ€

โ€œHer name is Peggy. I havenโ€™t been in touch with her for years. She seems to have moved abroad,โ€ Evelyn replied.

Tears welled up in Jenniferโ€™s eyes. โ€œDonโ€™t you have any way to contact her?โ€

Evelyn shook her head. โ€œI found her old phone number today and tried calling, but the call didnโ€™t go through. She probably changed her number when she moved to Cerein.โ€

โ€œCerein?โ€ Jennifer echoed.

โ€œYeah, she moved there a long time ago to build her career. I heard from some relatives that she opened a plastic surgery clinic there, and itโ€™s doing well. Iโ€™m not sure if sheโ€™s still in Cerein now. Sheโ€™s always been independent,โ€ Evelyn explained.

โ€œReally?โ€ Jenniferโ€™s expression eased a bit, though unshed tears still glistened in her eyes. โ€œSheโ€™s also an independent woman?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Evelyn replied. Catching Teresaโ€™s about-to-speak look, she quickly motioned for her to keep quiet.

Then, turning back to Jennifer, Evelyn said, โ€œIt would be great if we could get in touch with her. Iโ€™ll keep trying, Hannah.โ€

Just then, Jenniferโ€™s phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and said, โ€œIโ€™m heading home now. Donaldโ€™s off work, and I donโ€™t want him to worry.โ€

โ€œLet Teresa drive you,โ€ Evelyn suggested.

โ€œNo need. Iโ€™ll just take a cab,โ€ Jennifer replied, then turned and walked away.

Chapter 746

Only then did Teresa turn to Evelyn and ask, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell her the truth? Why did you make Peggy sound like a decent person while Evelynโ€ฆโ€

Evelyn let out a sigh. โ€œThe grudges between adults are ours to bear; you kids are innocent. Even though Hannah isnโ€™t my daughter anymore, how could I just throw away all these years of feelings between us?โ€

Teresa frowned, โ€œSheโ€™s going to find out sooner or later what kind of woman her mother is.โ€

Hiding it was pointless.
