Teresaโs face turned ghostly pale. She still couldnโt believe that Jennifer wasnโt Evelynโs daughter. This is impossible. Jennifer knows everything about Hannahโs childhood. If she isnโt my real sister, then who is she? Teresa thought, her mind spinning.
Seeing Teresa getting so upset, Miriam quickly said, โHey, Teresa, donโt panic yet. Letโs wait for your mom to arrive, and then you can all go to the hospital together and get another test done face-to-face.โ
โThe only reason I did the DNA test between you and Jennifer was that I always felt she treated you poorly. You two are just so differentโshe can be so extreme and intense sometimes.โ
โI donโt know if you see what I mean, but the test confirmed itโyou and Jennifer are blood-related, just not sisters.โ
Teresa was still confused. โRelated by blood, but not sisters? What does that mean? Thatโs confusing. Is she saying Jennifer isnโt my real sister, but weโre still related somehow? So does that make us some kind of relatives? Is that it?โ she wondered.
โYeah, thatโs my guess,โ Miriam replied. โMaybe one of your momโs relatives accidentally switched the babies or something like that.โ
Teresa wasnโt sure if Jennifer was really her sister, but if not, she saw no reason to keep tolerating Jenniferโs behavior, and she could finally stop feeling responsible for her.
โMiriam, I canโt throw you guys a welcome dinner today. I need to go back and deal with this,โ Teresa said.
โAlright,โ Miriam replied. โIf you want, let Mike stay with me. I can watch him for you.โ
โNo need. Iโm just heading home. His dadโs there now. Jonathan can look after Mike,โ Teresa said.
With that, Teresa took Michael home, the DNA test results tucked safely in her bag. Sheโd have to sort out the rest with Jennifer and Evelyn herself.
When Teresa got home with Michael, she found the door was open and realized Jonathan was already back.
Jonathan met her gaze. โDinnerโs on the table,โ he said.
Teresa had no mood to join him for dinner now. โIโm heading out. You look after Mike,โ she said.
โWhere are you going?โ Jonathan asked.
But Teresa was already out the door, moving like a whirlwind.
Jonathan looked at Michael, who was looking right back at him.
The two of them just stared at each other until Jonathan finally said, โAlright, honey. Go wash your hands. Dinnerโs ready.โ
โDaddy,โ Michael said, hugging Jonathanโs leg. โDaddyโฆ Mr. Daddy Lime.โ
Jonathanโs expression softened. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โDaddy, can you buy Mommy a new car? Her car broke down, so now she has to take taxis everywhere. Even when we went to pick up Miriam, we had to take taxis both ways,โ Michael said.
Jonathan frowned. โDidnโt Teresa say her car was just in the shop for maintenance?โ he thought.
Michael added, โMommyโs car broke down. She told me herself.โ
Hearing this, Jonathan made a call. โBobby, check whatโs going on with a Porsche for me. Iโll send you the license plate number.โ
โGot it, Mr. Lynn,โ Bobby replied.
Soon, Jonathan got the informationโTeresaโs car had been in an accident. It happened right around the time she was planning to leave Nareighโthe same day Michael tried to find her. But Teresa didnโt go out, so she wasnโt the one driving.
Jonathan looked at Michael, puzzled. โHow did your momโs car end up breaking down?โ
โMommy let Jennifer use her car, and then it broke. Today, we were riding in Jenniferโs car, and she kicked us out. Mommy was really upset,โ Michael said, rubbing his eyes.
โWhat?โ Jonathanโs anger spiked. โJennifer kicked you both out of the car?โ He remembered that Jenniferโs car was actually the one Teresa had bought for her.
