Listen to this chapter:

Jonathanโ€™s eyes darkened as he looked at Michaelโ€™s innocent face. Instead of answering right away, he crouched down to meet Michaelโ€™s gaze. He said, โ€œI need to explain something to you first.โ€

Even though he wasnโ€™t sure if Mike could fully understand at his age, he knew he had to say it.

He continued, โ€œSon, itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t want you or didnโ€™t accept you. From the very beginning, I truly didnโ€™t know you existed, or that your mom had given birth to you. Iโ€™m really sorry for all the times I hurt you before, Mike.โ€

Jonathan gently kissed Michaelโ€™s forehead and said, โ€œItโ€™s all my fault, Mike. I came into your life too late. But from now on, I promise youโ€™ll have the very best of everything.โ€

Jonathan kissed Michaelโ€™s cheek again, unable to hide his affection. He thought, โ€˜I finally have a sonโ€“my very own child.โ€™

Michaelโ€™s cheeks flamed. He thought, โ€˜Mr. Lime just kissed me. Am I dreaming?โ€™

Jonathan gasped in alarm as Michael collapsed into his arms. Without hesitation, he scooped the boy up and rushed him straight to the hospital.

Michaelโ€™s face was flushed bright red, looking just like a tiny apple.

The doctor reassured Jonathan, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. The little guy was probably just too excited and fainted for a moment. Itโ€™s nothing seriousโ€“heโ€™ll be fine.โ€

Jonathan finally breathed a sigh of relief. He said, โ€œAs long as my son is okay. So, when will he wake up?โ€

The doctor replied, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Mr. Lynn. Your son is just sleeping now. Heโ€™ll wake up naturally when heโ€™s rested.โ€

Jonathan thanked the doctor.

While Michael was still asleep, Jonathan called a nurse to draw blood from Michaelโ€™s finger, and then had his blood drawn as well. He arranged for another DNA test using both samples.

This time, he watched as the samples were sealed and sent to the lab, and signed the Paternity Test Consent Form himself.

He didnโ€™t doubt Garyโ€™s results, but a paternity test run by a third party without the subjectโ€™s consent was legally invalid.

By the time Jonathan returned to the room, Michael had already woken up.

โ€œMike, youโ€™re awake,โ€ Jonathan said as he strode over and gently stroked Michaelโ€™s hair. โ€œAre you feeling any better?โ€ he asked softly.

Michael shook his head, his gaze fixed on Jonathanโ€™s reddened hand. Then he exclaimed, โ€œMr. Lime, your hand is hurt.โ€

Jonathan smiled reassuringly and said gently, โ€œItโ€™s okay, it doesnโ€™t hurt at all.โ€

Michael said, โ€œHow could it not hurt? You should let the doctor bandage it up for you. I donโ€™t want you getting hurt.โ€

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll get it bandaged in a bit,โ€ Jonathan said. He remembered how Michael had shown him the same concern beforeโ€“Michael used to sneak into his office just to see him.

A warm feeling washed over Jonathan as he realized the unbreakable bond between him and Michael. He thought, โ€˜Mike has been sneaking out to see me.โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s such a little boy, yet he would take a taxi by himself, over and over again, just to come to my company and see me. There were even several times when heโ€™d just squat beside my car, waiting for me.โ€™

The more Jonathan recalled those moments from the past, the heavier the guilt and remorse weighed on his heart, making it hard to breathe.

He thought, โ€˜Why hadnโ€™t I been more careful? If Iโ€™d only been more vigilant, Michael wouldnโ€™t have had to skulk around, so small and alone, just to see me.โ€™

Jonathanโ€™s chest clenched beneath a crushing weight of guilt. He drew Michael into a tender embrace, his heart leaden with regret. He murmured, โ€œMike, Iโ€™m sorry. Itโ€™s my fault. I missed three whole years of your life.

โ€œFrom today on, Iโ€™ll be right beside you every step of the way. I wonโ€™t miss a single milestone in your life ever again.โ€
