Chapter 667

โ€œYou never know what fate has in store until the very end,โ€ Donaldโ€™s voice trailed off for a moment. โ€œWhat I mean is, I still believe you and Teresa could reconcile.โ€

Jonathan fell silent, his reluctance to discuss the topic at that moment was palpable.

The first rays of sunlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling window, casting a warm glow across the dining table. Jonathan remarked, โ€œThe morning sunโ€™s out today.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Donald murmured, his voice trailing off. It was indeed a bright, sunny day.

At Nareigh General Hospital early in the morning, Jenniferโ€™s accusatory questions already annoyed Teresa. โ€œI didnโ€™t see Donald yesterday,โ€ she snapped. โ€œNo idea why heโ€™s ignoring me. Donโ€™t come to me with this. Iโ€™m not your punching bag, Jennifer.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not blaming you,โ€ Jennifer snapped. โ€œIโ€™m just asking. If Donald didnโ€™t know about Mike, why would he suddenly ask me whether family bonds or love are more important? He must have figured something out.โ€

Teresa snapped, โ€œGo ask him yourself. Iโ€™m exhausted. Iโ€™ve been taking care of Michael all day, and Iโ€™m not in the mood to deal with the drama between you and Donald. Iโ€™ll be getting him discharged soon, and tonight, Michael and I are leaving here.โ€

โ€œTonight?โ€ Jennifer exclaimed, her voice laced with disbelief. โ€œWhere are you taking Mike? Why didnโ€™t you tell me beforehand?โ€

As the words left Jenniferโ€™s lips, Teresa shot her a look that clearly said, โ€œWhy would I tell you?โ€ Ever since Teresa slapped Jennifer that day, a quiet rift had grown between the sisters.

Jennifer took a deep breath. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to rush off. Mikeโ€™s just recovered, isnโ€™t he?โ€

Teresa said, โ€œHe just had an upset stomach. The doctor came by this morning and said heโ€™s fine to be discharged so that it makes room for another kid needing the bed. Iโ€™m not rescheduling again, itโ€™s a hassle. And Iโ€™m done with your accusations.โ€

Jennifer clenched her fists, swallowing back the words she always defaulted to โ€“ โ€œEverything I did was for your own good.โ€

Jennifer said, โ€œFine. Maybe itโ€™s for the best. Find somewhere quiet to have your second child; at least you wonโ€™t have to deal with Irene anymore.โ€

โ€œAlright, I get it,โ€ Teresa snapped, cutting Jennifer off. โ€œWeโ€™ve talked about Irene to death already. If youโ€™re done here, go. Youโ€™re not needed here anymore.โ€

Jenniferโ€™s eyes welled up. She thought, โ€˜Teresaโ€™s tone and expression seem to say they donโ€™t need me here anymoreโ€”she doesnโ€™t need a sister like me, and Michael doesnโ€™t need me as his aunt either.โ€™

Back then, she thought she could be Teresaโ€™s strongest backer, always protecting her sister and nephew. But now they were like strangers, a painful truth. Teresa didnโ€™t need her anymore, and theyโ€™d never be close again.

โ€œAlright,โ€ Jennifer exhaled deeply, forcing the words out. โ€œIf this is truly your decision, Iโ€™ll respect it this time.โ€

Teresaโ€™s hands froze mid-fold on the quilt. Hearing Jennifer continue, โ€œI wonโ€™t ask where youโ€™re going, nor will I try to track you down like last time. If you want to contact me, do; if not, thatโ€™s your choice.

โ€œTonight, let me drive you and Mike to the airportโ€”please donโ€™t refuse. Consider this the last thing I can do for you, as a final act of sisterly bond.โ€

Teresa didnโ€™t say a word. Jennifer turned around and left. Teresa stood still for a moment before snapping back to reality and getting back to pack up the belongings in the hospital room.

Jennifer had walked only a short way down the corridor when a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. Doubling over, she grabbed the railing and crouched down, clutching her belly.

She thought, โ€˜Is my baby? Am I about to miscarry? No. I canโ€™t let anything happen to this baby now, especially when I need this child more than ever.โ€™ She took deep breaths, trying to ease the pain.

Jennifer thought anxiously, โ€˜If Donald finds out that Mike is Teresaโ€™s son, heโ€™ll realize I faked the DNA test. This child is my only hope to keep him now. My baby, youโ€™re my last hope. Please, please be alright.โ€™
