Chapter 667
โYou never know what fate has in store until the very end,โ Donaldโs voice trailed off for a moment. โWhat I mean is, I still believe you and Teresa could reconcile.โ
Jonathan fell silent, his reluctance to discuss the topic at that moment was palpable.
The first rays of sunlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling window, casting a warm glow across the dining table. Jonathan remarked, โThe morning sunโs out today.โ
โYeah,โ Donald murmured, his voice trailing off. It was indeed a bright, sunny day.
At Nareigh General Hospital early in the morning, Jenniferโs accusatory questions already annoyed Teresa. โI didnโt see Donald yesterday,โ she snapped. โNo idea why heโs ignoring me. Donโt come to me with this. Iโm not your punching bag, Jennifer.โ
โIโm not blaming you,โ Jennifer snapped. โIโm just asking. If Donald didnโt know about Mike, why would he suddenly ask me whether family bonds or love are more important? He must have figured something out.โ
Teresa snapped, โGo ask him yourself. Iโm exhausted. Iโve been taking care of Michael all day, and Iโm not in the mood to deal with the drama between you and Donald. Iโll be getting him discharged soon, and tonight, Michael and I are leaving here.โ
โTonight?โ Jennifer exclaimed, her voice laced with disbelief. โWhere are you taking Mike? Why didnโt you tell me beforehand?โ
As the words left Jenniferโs lips, Teresa shot her a look that clearly said, โWhy would I tell you?โ Ever since Teresa slapped Jennifer that day, a quiet rift had grown between the sisters.
Jennifer took a deep breath. โThereโs no need to rush off. Mikeโs just recovered, isnโt he?โ
Teresa said, โHe just had an upset stomach. The doctor came by this morning and said heโs fine to be discharged so that it makes room for another kid needing the bed. Iโm not rescheduling again, itโs a hassle. And Iโm done with your accusations.โ
Jennifer clenched her fists, swallowing back the words she always defaulted to โ โEverything I did was for your own good.โ
Jennifer said, โFine. Maybe itโs for the best. Find somewhere quiet to have your second child; at least you wonโt have to deal with Irene anymore.โ
โAlright, I get it,โ Teresa snapped, cutting Jennifer off. โWeโve talked about Irene to death already. If youโre done here, go. Youโre not needed here anymore.โ
Jenniferโs eyes welled up. She thought, โTeresaโs tone and expression seem to say they donโt need me here anymoreโshe doesnโt need a sister like me, and Michael doesnโt need me as his aunt either.โ
Back then, she thought she could be Teresaโs strongest backer, always protecting her sister and nephew. But now they were like strangers, a painful truth. Teresa didnโt need her anymore, and theyโd never be close again.
โAlright,โ Jennifer exhaled deeply, forcing the words out. โIf this is truly your decision, Iโll respect it this time.โ
Teresaโs hands froze mid-fold on the quilt. Hearing Jennifer continue, โI wonโt ask where youโre going, nor will I try to track you down like last time. If you want to contact me, do; if not, thatโs your choice.
โTonight, let me drive you and Mike to the airportโplease donโt refuse. Consider this the last thing I can do for you, as a final act of sisterly bond.โ
Teresa didnโt say a word. Jennifer turned around and left. Teresa stood still for a moment before snapping back to reality and getting back to pack up the belongings in the hospital room.
Jennifer had walked only a short way down the corridor when a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. Doubling over, she grabbed the railing and crouched down, clutching her belly.
She thought, โIs my baby? Am I about to miscarry? No. I canโt let anything happen to this baby now, especially when I need this child more than ever.โ She took deep breaths, trying to ease the pain.
Jennifer thought anxiously, โIf Donald finds out that Mike is Teresaโs son, heโll realize I faked the DNA test. This child is my only hope to keep him now. My baby, youโre my last hope. Please, please be alright.โ
