โMs. Kelly, this is a bit tricky,โ the man replied.
Yalena said impatiently. โWhatโs so tricky about it? Didnโt we do it perfectly last time? Or is 3 million still not enough for you?โ
โMs. Kelly, last time was in Mianara. This time is different. Itโs too risky for us to do anything in broad daylight.โ
Yalena wouldnโt hear any of it. Enunciating each word coldly, she said, โ6 million dollars.โ
After a brief silence, the other party reluctantly agreed.
Yalena hung up the phone. She had it all figured outโafter all, once she married Jonathan, she wouldnโt be short of that million dollars.
Valena thought, Jonathan doesnโt like me now, but once I kill Teresa and her child, Iโll pretend to comfort him. I donโt believe he wonโt fall for me. And then, if the Kelly family ever found out I was a fake heiress, Iโd divorce Jonathan, take the family fortune, and disappear.
At the Lynn residence, Werner planned to move in with Hayden to better assist with his daily needs.
Hayden snorted, โStop pretending to care for me. Youโre just a lonely bachelor. I donโt need your help!โ
Werner was speechless.
Hayden also mocked Jonathan, saying, โYouโre no better than him. After all this time, you still canโt win your wife back.โ
Jonathan shook his head helplessly. He could tell Hayden was seeing red. Then he turned and headed to the dining room, curious to see what Gary was up to.
Gary was busy making coffee. With a smile, he handed a cup to Jonathan and said, โJonathan, I made this just for you. Go on, taste it!โ He had already held the cup right up to Jonathanโs lips.
โIs this coffee any good?โ Jonathan asked skeptically, taking the cup.
Pretending to be hurt, Gary said, โJonathan, donโt break my heart. I see you as my friend now, and thatโs why Iโm being so nice to you.โ
Jonathan lifted the cup and took a cautious sip.
โCome on, finish the whole cup,โ Gary urged, rubbing his hands together eagerly, his eyes gleaming with expectation.
โJust so-so,โ Jonathan said with a raised brow. But out of courtesy, he finished the whole cup.
Gary set the cup aside, planning to seal it later. Heโd already consulted with doctors. Hair with follicles wasnโt strictly necessary for a DNA test. Any item that could yield DNA would sufficeโa used drinking glass, a toothbrush, or even chewed gum.
Jonathan suddenly asked, โDid you have something to say at the hospital the other day?โ
Gary snapped back to attention, his expression suddenly serious. โYes.โ
Jonathan narrowed his eyes, suspicion creeping into his voice. โWhat exactly are you trying to say?โ
Gary shook his head, โI canโt tell you now, Jonathan. Iโm afraid you wonโt believe me without proof. Knowing you demand solid evidence, Iโve decided to show you the evidence."
โWhat tricks are you playing?โ Jonathan braced his hands on the sink and fixed Gary with a piercing, intense stare.
Chapter 661
โI promise, Iโll give you the answers youโre looking for,โ Gary said.
At night, Teresa was packing her bags, uncertain when sheโd return, so she packed as much as she could. She had already handled most of her business matters. Business was slow during the off season, with the workload lightened.
Miriam could handle the routine tasks. She was the one person Teresa could trust.
Michael emerged weakly from his room, his face ashen. โMommy, my tummy hurts.โ
Seeing Michael clutching his stomach, Teresa immediately dropped her luggage and rushed over to him. His pale face was covered in a cold sweat. She worried that Michael had overeaten. They couldnโt take the seafood from the fridge, so she had cooked it all for him earlier.
Teresa couldnโt eat any seafood herself because she was pregnant, so Michael ended up having it. But Teresa didn't think he had eaten that much.
Teresa poured some water for Michael, but he still clutched his stomach in pain, cold sweat streaming down his face even more. Without hesitation, Teresa dropped everything, scooped Michael up, and rushed him to the hospital.
While driving, Teresa called Jennifer, a doctor at Nareigh General Hospital, to ask if she could secure a bed for Michael in advance. Teresa was worried theyโd get there and find no available beds.
Jennifer didnโt pick up. Teresa hung up the phone and muttered bitterly. โWhy even bother calling her?โ
Michael whimpered, curling up in his seat, โAm I gonna die?โ
Teresa said urgently. โOf course not. Just hold on a little longer, okay? Weโre almost at the hospital.โ
Jennifer was doing the laundry at home for the first time since she married Donald. Donaldโs emotions were tangled. He couldnโt tell if she was trying to curry favor with him or if she just felt guilty.
Donald wondered, โCould Jennifer have some shady secret with Gary? No, she promised she wouldnโt lie to me. I should trust her!โ
โI just heard your phone ring. Maybe you should check who it is,โ Donald said as he walked into the bathroom.
Jennifer muttered to herself, โI wonder if the hospital needs me to come back again.โ
Jennifer unlocked her phone and saw Teresaโs missed call. A frown creased her brow; sheโd thought Teresa wouldnโt contact her again. She called back. โHey, did you just call me?โ Jennifer asked.
โMike has a stomachache; I was hoping you could secure a bed for him in advance, but never mind,โ Teresa said curtly, hanging up.
โHello?โ Jennifer stared at the disconnected phone. Hearing the commotion on the other end, she wondered, โIs Teresa at the hospital now?โ
Donald hung up the laundry Jennifer had just washed; since they both worked during the day, laundry usually had to wait. Just then, he noticed Jennifer slipping on her coat, ready to head out. โWhere are you going?โ he asked.
โMikeโฆโ Jennifer caught herself, gripping her car keys. She said, โTeresaโs sick. Iโm going to check on her at the hospital.โ
Donald still had his doubts, but Jennifer was already out the door. He noticed her scarf was still on the table. Worried she might catch a cold on such a cold day, he quickly grabbed his coat and rushed out after her.
Jennifer drove off in her car. Donald followed closely and saw her turn onto Sycamore Road, confirming it was the route to Nareigh General Hospital. As he glanced at the scarf on the passenger seat, he felt a sudden wave of regret and thought, I was wrong, I shouldnโt have doubted my wife!
As Donald was about to leave, a car sped past him through the barrier. In that instant, his keen eyes caught a fleeting glimpse of the driverโs profile.
Chapter 661
He froze.
He then saw Gary pull over to the side of the road, and Jennifer followed suit. Gary seemed to be speaking gravely, and as Jennifer approached his car, Jennifer grabbed his arm, her expression furious.
From where he stood, Donald couldnโt make out their words, but he could see the fury and panic flash across Jenniferโs face. I've never seen her look like this before, Donald thought, feeling shocked.
Then, he saw Jennifer clutch her forehead, her expression one of desperate pleading, as if she were begging Gary for something.
