Chapter 650
Miriam now held several strands of Jenniferโs hair in her hand.
Jennifer ran her fingers through her hair, thinking, Miriam has completely lost it, acting like a hysterical woman.
Miriam said, โIโm standing up for Teresa! Youโre supposed to be her closest person, yet you keep hurting her over and over!โ
Jennifer retorted, โWhat harm have I done to her? Iโm protecting Teresa, making her better than I do. Everything Iโve done has been for her, so she wonโt get hurt again. Weโre sisters. No one understands her.โ
Miriam covered her ears, only removing her hands when Jennifer finished speaking. She snapped, โMaybe you two arenโt even real sisters! Youโre just her worst enemy who canโt stand seeing her happy!โ
โMiriam, has dating Edward turned your brain into that of a college kid? Guess thatโs why you shouldnโt date someone way younger. Look at you now, acting all childish with these wild fantasies. Pathetic.โ
The next second, Miriam suddenly burst out laughing mockingly.
Jennifer was confused. โWhat are you laughing at?โ
Miriam suppressed her smile and put on a sarcastic look. โDo you know what this is called? Playing the saint while doing badly. You donโt care about Teresaโs feelings at allโitโs all about you!โ
Jennifer clenched her fists, her eyes narrowing sharply. โHow dare you say I donโt care about Teresa? As her best friend, you know better than anyone how miserable her marriage to Jonathan was.
โYou saw how much she suffered, yet you still want to push her back into that living hell? Youโre the one whoโs hurting her!โ
โHow do you know Teresa wonโt be happy now? Jonathanโs worth hundreds of millionsโheโll spoil her rotten.โ
โDoes money buy happiness?โ
Miriam burst out laughing again. โSeriously, Jennifer? You call me childish? Look whoโs talking! Didnโt your mom ever tell you that money solves ninety-nine percent of unhappiness? Jonathanโs loaded now, and the only person he cares about is Teresa.
โIf they get back together, Teresa will be happy, and Mike will get the best education. Even if you donโt give a damn about Teresa, shouldnโt you at least care about your nephew?
โMikeโs still little now, but what about his future? He deserves the best.โ
Jennifer snapped, โNeither Teresa nor Mike will ever be happyโnot with that witch Irene still in the picture.โ
Miriam retorted, โThis isnโt our problem to worry aboutโitโs something they should work out between themselves.โ
Jennifer snapped back, โIโm her sisterโitโs my duty to worry about this for her.โ
Miriam shook her head, completely exasperated. โJennifer, talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. Youโve been isolated from reality for far too long; your thinking is so warped and bizarre.
โAnd whatโs truly infuriating is that you donโt even realize youโre wrong.โ
'Guess this is what it feels like when you just canโt wake someone whoโs pretending to be asleep,' Miriam thought.
There was a knock at the door, breaking the tense silence. โDr. Nelson, itโs almost 2 PM. Your afternoon patients have already checked in and are waiting in line.โ
Jennifer replied, โGot it.โ She straightened her white coat and walked out. Before leaving, she turned to Miriam, her face expressionless, and said coolly, โYou need to leave now.โ
"Fine, Iโm leaving. Do you seriously think Iโd be here willingly if it werenโt for Teresa?โ With that, Miriam headed downstairs.
Miriam opened her palm, revealing several strands of Jenniferโs hair. Hastily, she pulled out the small pouch she had prepared and carefully tucked all the hair inside.
"Jennifer," Miriam scoffed, "I just canโt believe someone as heartless as you could be Teresaโs blood sister. Maybe you two arenโt even blood related at all..."
Benny suddenly interjected, โWhoโs blood related to whom?โ Miriam jumped in surprise, whirling around to find Benny standing right behind her; she hadnโt even noticed when heโd gotten there. Her hand flew to her chest. โBenny! What are you doing here?โ
Benny shrugged. โWell, you know, Hayden from the Lynn family isnโt feeling well, so I just came by to check on him and offer my familyโs regards.โ Benny raised an eyebrow at Miriam. โSo, what brings you to the hospital?โ
โIโve got a cold, just here to pick up some meds.โ
โThen where are your meds?โ Benny asked, eyeing Miriamโs empty hands.
โWell, Iโm heading to the pharmacy on the second floor to get my meds. Wonโt keep you from your visit. Edwardโs still waiting for me outside.โ
Benny blocked Miriamโs path, staring her down. โYou still havenโt answered my question. I heard you say something about proving blood relationsโwhose relations exactly, huh?โ
Miriam waved him off. โYou mustโve misheard me, Benny. I never said anything like that.โ
โMiriam.โ Benny insisted, patting her shoulder. โYouโre not hiding something from me, are you? Weโre such good friends. Is this about Teresa?โ
Miriam gritted her teeth in frustration, thinking, โOh no, Bennyโs sticking his nose in again.โ Then she said, โThis has nothing to do with Teresa. Iโm leaving.โ
Benny stroked his chin, and his eyes fixed on Miriamโs evasive look. โWell, I donโt believe it,โ he wondered.
โโ
โMr. Lynn, Christian has been waiting for you outside for quite some time.โ
Jonathan thought Christian was there to tender his resignation. He was about to head out, having spent the past few days virtually living at the company, though in reality, heโd been secretly tracking Teresaโs movements. He walked over to where Christian was waiting.
Christian stared at Jonathan, his eyes cold and desolate, carrying a loneliness only the heartbroken know. That sorrow made his deep eyes seem even darker. Christian said, โUm, Mr. Lynn, about the resignation I mentioned last timeโฆโ
โIf your mind is made up, Iโll approve it.โ
Just as Jonathan was about to head out, Christian suddenly called out to him. โMr. Lynn, where are you off to? Do you need a ride?โ
Jonathan replied, โNo need.โ
โMr. Lynn, wait a minute.โ Christian suddenly stopped Jonathan again, his fists tightly clenched.
Jonathan turned back. โWhat else? Iโve got urgent matters to attend to right now,โ
Christian slowly unclenched his fists, โThen... can we talk when you return?โ he conceded, โIโll be waiting for you right here.โ
Jonathan didnโt say anything, got into the car, and signaled the driver to go.
The airline staff had helped Jonathan monitor Teresaโs travel information. They located her return flight from Gorthany to Nareigh. Checking the time, Jonathan realized sheโd already returned to Nareigh the day before.
Jonathan figured Teresa was still at work. The Maybach pulled up at the entrance of Tervsouth Group. Time crawled by.
As the sunset painted the sky with a warm glow, Jonathan stepped out of the car. Employees were streaming out of the building, one after another. Jonathan walked up to the receptionist and asked, โIs Ms. Johnston still in?โ
โMs. Johnston is still in her office. She should be wrapping up soon.โ
Before the receptionist could finish speaking, the elevator doors slid open, and Teresa stepped out. โMs. Johnston, Mr. Lynn is here to see you,โ the receptionist called out.
Teresaโs eyes locked with Jonathanโs, and neither of them looked away.
Teresa snapped out of her daze and walked over calmly. She told the receptionist, โYou may leave now.โ Only when the entrance was empty did Teresa turn her gaze back to Jonathan.
