Chapter 646

He reached out, his thumb brushing her pale cheek. โ€œI donโ€™t want to see you so worn out, you know! After my parentsโ€ฆ it made me confront things. Fame, power, moneyโ€ฆ None of it really matters. What matters is family being healthy, being together. Thatโ€™s the real win.โ€

Jermiler grabbed his hand like a lifeline. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, weโ€™re gonna be happier than ever. Yeah, your parents split, but youโ€™ve got our home, Solat and me. And I need to be the department head. Itโ€™s all for our future.โ€

"Because I have no other choice," she thought. "Thereโ€™s no going back!"

โ€œThe number youโ€™ve dialed is not available. Please try again later.โ€ The automated voiceโ€ฆ

Jonathanโ€™s hand went slack. The phone slipped from his numb fingers and clattered onto the floor, but he didnโ€™t seem to notice. He just leaned his head back against the sofa, lost.

It was the tenth time he had called. Somehow, no one answered.

โ€œMr. Lynh.โ€ Jonathanโ€™s assistant came into his office and handed him a single sheet of paper. โ€œThe flight manifest you requested. All flights from here to Gorthany today. Ms. Johnston is confirmed to be on board.โ€

Jonathan sat up straight, his eyes scanning the paper until they locked on her name: Teresa Johnston. Staring at it, he distanced himself, as if he were looking at the name of a stranger.

โ€œMr. Lynn?โ€ The assistant asked, his voice trembling slightly as he took in his bossโ€™s thunderous expression.

โ€œYou may leave.โ€

โ€œMr. Lynn, your meetingโ€™s in half an hourโ€ฆโ€

โ€œCancel everything.โ€

โ€œYโ€“yesโ€ฆ Mr. Lynn.โ€

A strange, chilling sense ofโ€ฆ

The door clicked shut softly, leaving Jonathan alone. Jonathan melted into the sofa, a dead weight. A long time seemed to pass before another knock came. He pressed his throbbing temples. โ€œCome in.โ€

It was Edward. He studied Jonathan for a moment before speaking. โ€œJonathan, I need to head out early. Itโ€™s my dadโ€™s birthday, and I need to get home for his party.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ Jonathan said, his voice raw.

Edward lingered, a frown on his face. โ€œJonathan. You okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ Jonathan said.

โ€œOkay. You sound a little rough, and I thought you were coming down with something. Oh, hey, my mom said to invite youโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆto dinner,โ€ Edward said.

Jonathan let out a small, tired sigh. โ€œTell her Iโ€™m swamped with work, I canโ€™t make it. Iโ€™ll have my assistant send something over for your dad.โ€

Edward nodded. โ€œAlright, got it. Iโ€™ll head out then.โ€

Jonathan gave a limp wave, his head already resting against the back of the sofa.

Edward was halfway to the door when he stopped and turned around. โ€œThis doesnโ€™t add up,โ€ he thought. "Jonathan gave me 300 thousand dollars to plan his ten year anniversary with Teresa. Hired the best event company in Narelgh. Fireworks. A custom light show. We spent a fortune. He should be on cloud nine."

โ€œJonathan,โ€ Edward blurted out, unable to stop himself. โ€œYou and Teresa still havenโ€™t made up? Was it my fault the plan didnโ€™t work? I mean, she loved romantic stuff like that, right?โ€

Jonathanโ€™s head snapped up. He stared at Edward, his eyes cold. โ€œGet out.โ€

Edwardโ€™s stomach dropped. He thought, โ€˜Oh, crap. They really didnโ€™t make up.โ€™

โ€œBut Jonathan, youโ€™ve known each other for ten years. With that, I think thereโ€™s nothing you canโ€™t work out.โ€ Edward couldnโ€™t help himself.

โ€œI said, get out.โ€ Jonathanโ€™s voice was dangerously quiet now, a tone he rarely ever used.

Edward instinctively touched his nose. โ€œRight. Yep. Leaving. Shutting up now.โ€

The door clicked shut. Jonathan leaned his head back against the sofa and let out a bitter laugh. He wondered, โ€˜Ten years. So what? Weโ€™re done. Thereโ€™s no going back.โ€™
