Chapter 588
Meanwhile, Sanford woke up with a pounding headache. Blinking his bleary eyes, he looked around and realized he was in a hotel room.
Sanford thought to himself, โAll I remember is going out for drinks last night, and I think I mightโve seen Donaldโs father at some point. But after that, everythingโs just a blur.โ
Just as Sanford finished freshening up and was about to head out, a knock came at the door. He opened the door, only to find Teresa standing there.
Teresa entered, carrying a takeout meal, and placed it before him, her face expressionless. She said, โI brought you some local specialties. Not sure if theyโll suit your taste.โ
Sanford was a little confused, waiting for Teresa to explain. He asked groggily, โHow did you find me here? Waitโฆ Was it you who brought me back last night?โ
Teresa denied it, but that left Sanford genuinely puzzled. Teresa said coolly, โCheck your phone yourself.โ
Sanford checked his phone and, to his astonishment, found that he had made several calls, all to Teresa.
Teresa said coolly, โYou called me in the dead of night but kept calling out Jenniferโs name. I figured you meant to call her instead of me.โ
Sanford hesitated, then admitted honestly, โI was drunk last night. I had this dream. I was back in college, and I remember seeing Jennifer and wanting to have dinner with her. I guess thatโs why I accidentally called you.โ
Teresa scoffed, โYou โaccidentallyโ called that many times? Donโt tell me youโre still hung up on Jennifer.โ
โI got over her a long time ago.โ Sanford poured himself a glass of water and gulped down a few glasses to soothe his parched throat. He sighed. โJennifer and Donald are really in love. And besidesโฆโ
โBesides what?โ Teresa pressed.
Sanford hesitated, finally admitting, โJenniferโฆ Sheโs pregnant.โ
Teresa scoffed, โWell. Thatโs old news, isnโt it?โ
Sanford had thought Teresa didnโt know about this. He said gently, โYou know, Jennifer still cares for you as her sister. Otherwise, she wouldnโt have shared such personal matters with you.โ
Teresa scoffed, โShe once wanted me to go with her for an abortion, but by some twist of fate, I left, and she couldnโt go through with it alone. Later, she mentioned wanting an abortion again, but it never worked out.โ
Sanford frowned in confusion. โWhy would she want an abortion? Isnโt this good news?โ
Teresa turned around and said, โSheโs afraid itโll affect her career, and besides, sheโs never been fond of children. Now Iโm actually worried that once the baby is born, she might not even love her own child. Oh well, itโs not my place to worry about this. Otherwise, Iโd end up being as nosy as she is.โ
Sanford fell silent. Now that he had sobered up, he realized Teresa still hadnโt told Jonathan about Mike.
โJennifer is your sister, after all. Just give her a few days to prepare. Since youโve already decided to come clean about Mike, a few more days wonโt make a difference. Let Jennifer handle things with Donald first.โ
Teresa remained silent. Sanford gazed at her back and said, โI know Iโm in no position to ask anything of you, but I still want to thank you for taking myโฆโ
โYouโre wrong,โ Teresa turned and looked at him calmly. โHonestly, I couldnโt care less about what you said. But seeing what youโve been through and your current situation really got me thinking about Michael. You were right about one thing. No matter how messy things get between adults, heโs innocent. Iโve always believed that.โ
Sanford said gently, โYou mean well. I truly believe Jonathan will understand once he knows the truth. As for Ireneโฆโ
Sanford fell silent. He didnโt know what to say.
