Chapter 540
Irene glared at Liora, unable to stand her tone, and retorted, โAre you threatening me? Go ahead, sue me then. The doctors all confirmed back then that Yorickโs liver cancer had nothing to do with me."
โIf he hadnโt drunk that poison for you, do you think youโd even be alive right now?โ
Liora smiled gently. The next moment, she suddenly pulled out her phone and said, โI recorded everything.โ
Ireneโs face instantly paled. She lunged to snatch the phone, barking, โDelete that right now!โ
โIf youโre not scared, then what exactly are you afraid of?โ Liora said coolly, locking her phone screen as she spoke. She let Irene snatch it, but when Irene couldnโt unlock it, Liora just smiled and calmly took her phone back.
Liora said coolly, โItโs passcodeโlocked, but you canโt even open it, so whatโs the point? Do you think deleting the recording would make the truth disappear?โ
Liora leaned in close to Ireneโs ear and whispered, โIโd rather not dredge up the past, but I have only one demand: leave my son alone.โ
Irene glared at Liora and said, โI hope you rot in hell.โ In the end, she could only watch helplessly as Liora, coughing violently and leaning against the wall for support, slowly walked away.
Furious, Irene grabbed a pillow off the bed and hurled it at Lioraโs retreating figure.
When she was left alone in the room, Irene looked at her stillโtrembling hands, Lioraโs threatening words echoing in her ears. Suddenly, memories came flooding back.
She remembered she wasnโt always like this. When she married Yorick, she was gentle and kind. When she was pregnant with Jonathan, before Liora ever came into the picture, everyone praised her as a good wife.
Unlike others, she never had morning sickness. She used to tell people her baby was heavenโsent, certain he would be a wellโbehaved child. Yorick doted on her back then. That was the happiest year of her life.
She thought her happiness would last forever, but then Liora appeared, and everything changed. And thatโs when her personality utterly transformed.
Jonathan visited Irene at the hospital. Seeing that she was fine, he said bluntly, โYou should get discharged. No need to stay here any longer. Iโve booked you a flight back to Nareigh for tonight. You can go back now.โ
Irene asked tentatively, โI heard that Lioraโs son, Sanford, got detained.โ
Jonathan glanced at his watch and said coolly, โHeโs been detained for almost three days now.โ
Irene asked, โAre you going to sue him? Make him suffer in prison for a year or two just to teach him a lesson?โ
Jonathan shot back, โAnd why shouldnโt I?โ
Irene fell silent. Her expression was a tangled knot of suppressed pain and sorrow. Under Jonathanโs piercing gaze, she said, โJonathan, donโt press charges.
โDetain him for a few days. That should be enough. Iโm sure he wonโt dare do it again.โ
Jonathan asked, โWhy?โ
Avoiding eye contact, Irene said, โIt was your grandfather who pressured me. Hayden said Sanford is your fatherโs bloodline, part of the Lynn family. He doesnโt want to see you two turn on each other.โ
Jonathanโs gaze turned steely. He said, โIโll handle Grandpa. Donโt worry about it.โ
Irene sighed and said, โBut your grandpa is such a stubborn old man. You should just drop this whole thing with Sanford. Heโs already been detained, and everyone knows he was just slandering. It wonโt affect us at all. Letโs just leave it at that.โ
Jonathan sat on the edge of Ireneโs bed, fixing her with a hard stare. He asked, โAre you being this kind to the other womanโs child? Besides, Liora got pregnant behind my fatherโs back. Donโt you hate her?โ
