Chapter 540

Irene glared at Liora, unable to stand her tone, and retorted, โ€œAre you threatening me? Go ahead, sue me then. The doctors all confirmed back then that Yorickโ€™s liver cancer had nothing to do with me."

โ€œIf he hadnโ€™t drunk that poison for you, do you think youโ€™d even be alive right now?โ€

Liora smiled gently. The next moment, she suddenly pulled out her phone and said, โ€œI recorded everything.โ€

Ireneโ€™s face instantly paled. She lunged to snatch the phone, barking, โ€œDelete that right now!โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re not scared, then what exactly are you afraid of?โ€ Liora said coolly, locking her phone screen as she spoke. She let Irene snatch it, but when Irene couldnโ€™t unlock it, Liora just smiled and calmly took her phone back.

Liora said coolly, โ€œItโ€™s passcodeโ€“locked, but you canโ€™t even open it, so whatโ€™s the point? Do you think deleting the recording would make the truth disappear?โ€

Liora leaned in close to Ireneโ€™s ear and whispered, โ€œIโ€™d rather not dredge up the past, but I have only one demand: leave my son alone.โ€

Irene glared at Liora and said, โ€œI hope you rot in hell.โ€ In the end, she could only watch helplessly as Liora, coughing violently and leaning against the wall for support, slowly walked away.

Furious, Irene grabbed a pillow off the bed and hurled it at Lioraโ€™s retreating figure.

When she was left alone in the room, Irene looked at her stillโ€“trembling hands, Lioraโ€™s threatening words echoing in her ears. Suddenly, memories came flooding back.

She remembered she wasnโ€™t always like this. When she married Yorick, she was gentle and kind. When she was pregnant with Jonathan, before Liora ever came into the picture, everyone praised her as a good wife.

Unlike others, she never had morning sickness. She used to tell people her baby was heavenโ€“sent, certain he would be a wellโ€“behaved child. Yorick doted on her back then. That was the happiest year of her life.

She thought her happiness would last forever, but then Liora appeared, and everything changed. And thatโ€™s when her personality utterly transformed.

Jonathan visited Irene at the hospital. Seeing that she was fine, he said bluntly, โ€œYou should get discharged. No need to stay here any longer. Iโ€™ve booked you a flight back to Nareigh for tonight. You can go back now.โ€

Irene asked tentatively, โ€œI heard that Lioraโ€™s son, Sanford, got detained.โ€

Jonathan glanced at his watch and said coolly, โ€œHeโ€™s been detained for almost three days now.โ€

Irene asked, โ€œAre you going to sue him? Make him suffer in prison for a year or two just to teach him a lesson?โ€

Jonathan shot back, โ€œAnd why shouldnโ€™t I?โ€

Irene fell silent. Her expression was a tangled knot of suppressed pain and sorrow. Under Jonathanโ€™s piercing gaze, she said, โ€œJonathan, donโ€™t press charges.

โ€œDetain him for a few days. That should be enough. Iโ€™m sure he wonโ€™t dare do it again.โ€

Jonathan asked, โ€œWhy?โ€

Avoiding eye contact, Irene said, โ€œIt was your grandfather who pressured me. Hayden said Sanford is your fatherโ€™s bloodline, part of the Lynn family. He doesnโ€™t want to see you two turn on each other.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s gaze turned steely. He said, โ€œIโ€™ll handle Grandpa. Donโ€™t worry about it.โ€

Irene sighed and said, โ€œBut your grandpa is such a stubborn old man. You should just drop this whole thing with Sanford. Heโ€™s already been detained, and everyone knows he was just slandering. It wonโ€™t affect us at all. Letโ€™s just leave it at that.โ€

Jonathan sat on the edge of Ireneโ€™s bed, fixing her with a hard stare. He asked, โ€œAre you being this kind to the other womanโ€™s child? Besides, Liora got pregnant behind my fatherโ€™s back. Donโ€™t you hate her?โ€
