Chapter 510

โ€œIs Irene inside?โ€ said Teresa.

Edward nodded. Teresa then said, โ€œIโ€™d better not go in. Please bring this in for me.โ€ Then she left.

Edward hurried inside, made his way to Jonathan, who was speaking with the guests, and whispered in his ear, โ€œTeresa is here.โ€

Jonathan glanced at the flowers Edward handed him, raised an eyebrow, and said, โ€œWhat?โ€

Edward replied, โ€œYeah, you heard me. Teresa is here.โ€

Jonathan was stunned. Then he asked, โ€œWhere is she?โ€

Edward said, โ€œSheโ€™s at the door. She came to pay her respects. I invited her to come in, but she refused.โ€

โ€œStay here. Iโ€™ll go talk to her.โ€ Jonathan walked out of the room quickly.

Teresa had just walked out of the alley when she heard footsteps behind her. Turning around, she saw Jonathan striding toward her, grabbing her arm.

Jonathan couldnโ€™t believe that sheโ€™d come here. He said, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me you were coming?โ€

Teresa pulled her arm back. โ€œI figured you must be very busy, so I didnโ€™t want to bother you. I just happened to be passing by.โ€

โ€œJust passing by?โ€ Jonathan fixed his gaze on her. โ€œItโ€™s Halloween today, and I remembered that you should come home with Jennifer.โ€

Teresa replied, โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œThen how could this be โ€˜passing byโ€™? Did you come from Chesburg or Nareigh? How did you get here?โ€ Jonathan pressed.

Teresa couldnโ€™t take his grilling anymore and finally admitted, โ€œI drove here from Chesburg. I took the highway all the way.โ€

โ€œSeriously? From Chesburg to Jaxmere?โ€ Jonathan was surprised.

Teresa said, โ€œYeah. Anyway, itโ€™s just in the opposite direction from Nareigh. The highway wasnโ€™t busy, and 120 miles really isnโ€™t that far.โ€

Jonathan paused, doing the math. He thought that she had probably been driving for close to three hours.

The weariness in Jonathanโ€™s eyes hit Teresa hard. She finally softened her voice and said, โ€œYou said you were not okay. I can tell itโ€™s been rough for you.โ€

Teresa continued, โ€œIt was so sudden. I couldnโ€™t believe it when Miriam told me. Gordon looked fine just a few days ago, and he just reunited with Fiona. I thought they would have more time.โ€

As Teresa spoke, her eyes softened with concern. โ€œAnyway, Iโ€™m sorry for your loss. Make sure you get some rest and donโ€™t push yourself too hard.โ€

With that, she turned to leave.

โ€œDonโ€™t go.โ€ Jonathan put an arm around her shoulder, pulling her back gently. As Teresa tilted her head slightly, Jonathan couldnโ€™t stop himself from placing a kiss on her cheek. โ€œThank you for coming. It means a lot to me.โ€

Teresa became tearful, and it took a while for her to snap back. She pushed him off gently and said, โ€œYou should head back. The funeral isnโ€™t over. Youโ€™ve got a lot of things to do.โ€

Jonathan said, โ€œItโ€™s okay. Itโ€™s getting late. Are you sure you want to go back? Let me book a hotel room for you. Just stay over.โ€

Teresa shook her head, โ€œI can get one myself. You donโ€™t need to worry about me.โ€

Jonathan, however, remained firm. He held Teresaโ€™s hand and said, โ€œCome on, letโ€™s go. Whereโ€™s your car? Iโ€™ll drive.โ€

Teresa followed without protest. His hand was firm, comforting, and strangely hard to let go of.

โ€œHop in the front,โ€ Jonathan said as he got into her car and started the engine, โ€œIโ€™ll take you to the best hotel in town, get you settled, and then head back.โ€

It was already eight oโ€™clock at night. Once they arrived at a hotel 12 miles away, Teresa urged Jonathan to head back to focus on the funeral and get some rest.

Jonathan walked Teresa to her room. He stood at the door, reached out, and pulled her into a silent embrace. Her head rested on his shoulder, and the perfume on him filled her senses.

Jonathan kissed her hair softly before reluctantly letting go. โ€œIf you need anything, call me. And if Iโ€™m not picking up, call Edward.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Teresa said quietly, not pulling away this time. She could tell he was going through a lot.

Jonathan said, โ€œDo you have to go back so quickly? Iโ€™ll come to you after everything is done tomorrow. I can drive you back to Nareigh.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll see,โ€ Teresa said.

Jonathan said no more. Teresa walked him out and watched his car disappear before heading upstairs.

Teresa spent the night alone. When she woke up the next morning, she thought maybe she should go back to Nareigh herself.

When she got downstairs, however, she couldnโ€™t find her car. Only then did she remember that Jonathan had taken her car yesterday.

Without a car, Teresa couldnโ€™t go back to Nareigh. Since she couldnโ€™t leave for now, she turned back toward the hotel, thinking, โ€œThankfully, I havenโ€™t checked out yet!โ€

The next day, Gordonโ€™s funeral drew a crowd of at least a hundred people. A quarter of them were security guards, and Irene and Heidi stayed at Fionaโ€™s side the entire time, supporting her.

Outside, neighbors stood around gossiping about this.

โ€œLook. That woman in the middle is Gordonโ€™s wife. She looks pretty tough for her age.โ€

โ€œThe ones on the sides are his daughters, right? Look at their sons. Theyโ€™re so tall and handsome. It seemed that Gordon had a big family.โ€

โ€œCome on, letโ€™s go home. Itโ€™s about to rain.โ€

Rain and tears blended together as they streamed down Fionaโ€™s face. Since Gordonโ€™s death, she had only cried twiceโ€“once when she went back to the old place and saw the things she used to use, and once today, when she saw him in the coffin.

She knew she had completely lost him.

She hated him. After all, he had done things in the past that she could never forgive. He lied to her, framed her, and broke her. However, knowing that he had spent all these years searching for her even with his Alzheimerโ€™s, she felt touched.

โ€œRest in peace, Gordon,โ€ Fiona murmured, her fingers brushing across his photo.

Around five in the afternoon, guests started to leave. Irene and Heidiโ€™s hair was damp with rain. They went into the room and changed their clothes. Irene said to Jonathan and Edward, โ€œI might need you to take care of the remaining matters tomorrow morning. Iโ€™ll stay and talk with Fiona.โ€ Edward nodded, Jonathan glanced at his watch and turned to leave. โ€œNo problem. Iโ€™ll talk to the priest tomorrow. If you need anything, just call me.โ€

โ€œOkay. Where are you going now?โ€ Irene called out, but Jonathan had already dashed off and quickly disappeared.

Irene turned to Edward and asked, โ€œWhere is Jonathan going?โ€

Edward shook his head, playing dumb. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Irene didnโ€™t press further, her attention drawn back by Heidiโ€™s words as they turned to Fionaโ€™s next plan.
