Chapter 492
Irene and Heidi were both confused. They had never even met their mother. Gordon had grabbed Jenniferโs wrist, insisting that the bracelet she was wearing belonged to Fiona.
Jonathan said to Irene, โIโm heading out for a bit. Can you get in touch with Donaldโs parents and apologize to them?โ
โSure,โ Irene replied.
After Jonathan left, Cathy and Werner arrived at the hospital. Cathy glanced at Gordon lying in the hospital bed and asked, โIs he all right now?โ
Irene shook her head and sighed helplessly. โI never thought heโd suddenly lose it at Jennifer. Apparently, it was all because of that bracelet on her wrist.โ
Cathy asked, โWhy would Gordon freak out just from seeing a bracelet?โ
โI have no idea. Weโll have to wait until my dad wakes up and ask him. He kept insisting it was my momโs,โ Irene said.
โMaybe he was just talking nonsense,โ Cathy said, not taking it too seriously, but clearly wanting to speak with Irene alone.
Irene said, โWe can talk right here.โ
Cathy and Werner exchanged a look, and Heidi spoke up, โIโll go get Dad something to eat, in case he wakes up hungry and starts making a fuss.โ
Once Heidi left, Cathy nudged Werner, signaling him to leave.
Werner said, โIrene, look at the mess he has caused. You knew Gordon had dementia, but you still brought him to the wedding. This was Donaldโs big day. Now look what happened.โ
He continued, โThe whole wedding was ruined. Jennifer got upset. Cathy and I had to go around apologizing to everyone. What a disaster.โ
Irene let out a cold laugh. โLike I wanted any of this. Honestly, Jennifer never should have married Donald. She is a troublemaker, but you just wouldnโt listen. Now look, the wedding is a mess.โ
Cathy interrupted, โIrene, it was Gordon who lost it and ruined the wedding. If he hadnโt, none of this would have happened.โ
Irene pressed her lips together, her face cold. โFine. When my dad wakes up, heโll apologize to you.โ
Cathy breathed out and forced a smile. โIrene, weโre not trying to make things hard for Gordon.โ
โSo youโre just making things hard for me, huh?โ Irene shot back.
โYou all think Iโm up to something, that I messed up Donaldโs wedding on purpose, right? Thatโs what you really think, isnโt it?โ
Cathy could no longer maintain her forced smile. She snorted, โWe never said that.โ
Irene said, โOh, cut the act. Youโre only being nice because my sonโs got money and power. You just want to cozy up to us, admit it.โ
Werner said, โWe really donโt think that way.โ
Irene said, โAlright, enough.โ She sat down in a huff, her anger flaring. โWerner, you can stop pretending too. Back then, your family got so many benefits. Your brother was smarter than you, but for your sake, he gave up a high-paying job overseas.โ
She added, โHe stayed home to take care of Gordon so you could go chase your dreams without any worries. But what did you do? You went out for a few years and came back with nothing to show for it. Then you married Cathy, and my dad even paid for your house. He always favored you. When I married your brother, we got nothing. After your brother died, you finally remembered Jonathan. Now that Jonathanโs made it big and started his own company, youโve all been living off him. Donโt tell me Jonathan hasnโt given you money. Even your sonโs engagement and wedding were paid for by Jonathanโalmost sixty thousand dollars. And now youโre expecting me to apologize to you?โ
Irene finished, her voice shaking with anger, and Werner couldnโt get a word out. Cathy couldnโt stand seeing Werner like that. She said, โCome on, Irene, why bring up the past?โ
Irene said, โWhat did I do wrong? None of this was my choice. Donโt pin it all on me.โ
Cathy said, โThatโs your dad causing this. My sonโs wedding turned into a mess, and we canโt even complain? Usually, we let you have your way because youโre a widowโโ
โWhat did you just say?โ Ireneโs eyes widened. โI donโt need your pity!โ She shoved Cathy. โGet out. Both of you, out!โ
Werner quickly pulled Cathy away. โLetโs go.โ He led his wife out, steering clear of Irene. Cathyโs eyes filled with tears as she stormed out of the hospital, shaking off Wernerโs hand.
Cathy said, โWhy didnโt you stand up to her? Sure, weโre not as rich, but itโs not like she earned that money herself. Itโs all because Jonathanโs successful. Without him, Ireneโs nothing.โ
Werner sighed. โIrene said Gordon would apologize once he wakes up, so letโs just leave it at that. No need to make things worse.โ
Cathyโs tears fell harder. She asked, โWhy are you so scared of her? Iโve kept quiet for years, never dared to talk back. Havenโt I suffered enough?โ
Werner led Cathy to the car, telling her to cry inside instead of making a scene. Cathy didnโt even want to look at him. He tried to cheer her up by offering to buy her favorite pastries, but she found him disgusting.
Werner said, โI know youโre upset, but sheโs still my sister-in-law. My brother looked after me when he was alive. Now heโs gone. Am I supposed to bully his wife?โ
Cathy said, โOur sonโs wedding is ruined, everyoneโs laughing at him, and you still care more about your dead brother? Does only Ireneโs pride matter? What about ours? Are we just supposed to let her walk all over us?โ
Werner sighed again and fell silent.
Jonathan got in touch with the dealership and arranged for a deep gray Audi Q8 for Donald. The car was three times the price of Donaldโs old ride. When Donald saw the sleek, impressive car, his eyes lit up. โJonathan, I canโt accept this.โ
โJust take it. I know you sold your car,โ Jonathan said.
Donald cleared his throat. โNo, my carโs just in for maintenance.โ
โCome on, you think I donโt know? Where else did you get that 150 thousand from?โ Jonathan sighed. โGrandpa Gordon already caused you enough trouble. If thereโs anything else I can help with, just let me know.โ
Donald shook his head. โI appreciate it, Jonathan, but this really isnโt your problem.โ
Jonathan paused for a couple of seconds and asked, โHowโs Jennifer doing now?โ
Donald sighed. โJenniferโs been staying at home, not in the best mood. Donโt worry, Jonathan, Iโll take good care of her.โ
Jonathan wasnโt worried about Jennifer. He was worried about Teresa and had no idea how she was holding up.
He explained to Donald, โGrandpa Gordon lost it when he saw Jennifer wearing that bracelet. He kept insisting it was Grandmaโs. I wanted to ask if you know where that bracelet came from.โ
