Chapter 492

Irene and Heidi were both confused. They had never even met their mother. Gordon had grabbed Jenniferโ€™s wrist, insisting that the bracelet she was wearing belonged to Fiona.

Jonathan said to Irene, โ€œIโ€™m heading out for a bit. Can you get in touch with Donaldโ€™s parents and apologize to them?โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Irene replied.

After Jonathan left, Cathy and Werner arrived at the hospital. Cathy glanced at Gordon lying in the hospital bed and asked, โ€œIs he all right now?โ€

Irene shook her head and sighed helplessly. โ€œI never thought heโ€™d suddenly lose it at Jennifer. Apparently, it was all because of that bracelet on her wrist.โ€

Cathy asked, โ€œWhy would Gordon freak out just from seeing a bracelet?โ€

โ€œI have no idea. Weโ€™ll have to wait until my dad wakes up and ask him. He kept insisting it was my momโ€™s,โ€ Irene said.

โ€œMaybe he was just talking nonsense,โ€ Cathy said, not taking it too seriously, but clearly wanting to speak with Irene alone.

Irene said, โ€œWe can talk right here.โ€

Cathy and Werner exchanged a look, and Heidi spoke up, โ€œIโ€™ll go get Dad something to eat, in case he wakes up hungry and starts making a fuss.โ€

Once Heidi left, Cathy nudged Werner, signaling him to leave.

Werner said, โ€œIrene, look at the mess he has caused. You knew Gordon had dementia, but you still brought him to the wedding. This was Donaldโ€™s big day. Now look what happened.โ€

He continued, โ€œThe whole wedding was ruined. Jennifer got upset. Cathy and I had to go around apologizing to everyone. What a disaster.โ€

Irene let out a cold laugh. โ€œLike I wanted any of this. Honestly, Jennifer never should have married Donald. She is a troublemaker, but you just wouldnโ€™t listen. Now look, the wedding is a mess.โ€

Cathy interrupted, โ€œIrene, it was Gordon who lost it and ruined the wedding. If he hadnโ€™t, none of this would have happened.โ€

Irene pressed her lips together, her face cold. โ€œFine. When my dad wakes up, heโ€™ll apologize to you.โ€

Cathy breathed out and forced a smile. โ€œIrene, weโ€™re not trying to make things hard for Gordon.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re just making things hard for me, huh?โ€ Irene shot back.

โ€œYou all think Iโ€™m up to something, that I messed up Donaldโ€™s wedding on purpose, right? Thatโ€™s what you really think, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Cathy could no longer maintain her forced smile. She snorted, โ€œWe never said that.โ€

Irene said, โ€œOh, cut the act. Youโ€™re only being nice because my sonโ€™s got money and power. You just want to cozy up to us, admit it.โ€

Werner said, โ€œWe really donโ€™t think that way.โ€

Irene said, โ€œAlright, enough.โ€ She sat down in a huff, her anger flaring. โ€œWerner, you can stop pretending too. Back then, your family got so many benefits. Your brother was smarter than you, but for your sake, he gave up a high-paying job overseas.โ€

She added, โ€œHe stayed home to take care of Gordon so you could go chase your dreams without any worries. But what did you do? You went out for a few years and came back with nothing to show for it. Then you married Cathy, and my dad even paid for your house. He always favored you. When I married your brother, we got nothing. After your brother died, you finally remembered Jonathan. Now that Jonathanโ€™s made it big and started his own company, youโ€™ve all been living off him. Donโ€™t tell me Jonathan hasnโ€™t given you money. Even your sonโ€™s engagement and wedding were paid for by Jonathanโ€”almost sixty thousand dollars. And now youโ€™re expecting me to apologize to you?โ€

Irene finished, her voice shaking with anger, and Werner couldnโ€™t get a word out. Cathy couldnโ€™t stand seeing Werner like that. She said, โ€œCome on, Irene, why bring up the past?โ€

Irene said, โ€œWhat did I do wrong? None of this was my choice. Donโ€™t pin it all on me.โ€

Cathy said, โ€œThatโ€™s your dad causing this. My sonโ€™s wedding turned into a mess, and we canโ€™t even complain? Usually, we let you have your way because youโ€™re a widowโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€ Ireneโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œI donโ€™t need your pity!โ€ She shoved Cathy. โ€œGet out. Both of you, out!โ€

Werner quickly pulled Cathy away. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ He led his wife out, steering clear of Irene. Cathyโ€™s eyes filled with tears as she stormed out of the hospital, shaking off Wernerโ€™s hand.

Cathy said, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you stand up to her? Sure, weโ€™re not as rich, but itโ€™s not like she earned that money herself. Itโ€™s all because Jonathanโ€™s successful. Without him, Ireneโ€™s nothing.โ€

Werner sighed. โ€œIrene said Gordon would apologize once he wakes up, so letโ€™s just leave it at that. No need to make things worse.โ€

Cathyโ€™s tears fell harder. She asked, โ€œWhy are you so scared of her? Iโ€™ve kept quiet for years, never dared to talk back. Havenโ€™t I suffered enough?โ€

Werner led Cathy to the car, telling her to cry inside instead of making a scene. Cathy didnโ€™t even want to look at him. He tried to cheer her up by offering to buy her favorite pastries, but she found him disgusting.

Werner said, โ€œI know youโ€™re upset, but sheโ€™s still my sister-in-law. My brother looked after me when he was alive. Now heโ€™s gone. Am I supposed to bully his wife?โ€

Cathy said, โ€œOur sonโ€™s wedding is ruined, everyoneโ€™s laughing at him, and you still care more about your dead brother? Does only Ireneโ€™s pride matter? What about ours? Are we just supposed to let her walk all over us?โ€

Werner sighed again and fell silent.

Jonathan got in touch with the dealership and arranged for a deep gray Audi Q8 for Donald. The car was three times the price of Donaldโ€™s old ride. When Donald saw the sleek, impressive car, his eyes lit up. โ€œJonathan, I canโ€™t accept this.โ€

โ€œJust take it. I know you sold your car,โ€ Jonathan said.

Donald cleared his throat. โ€œNo, my carโ€™s just in for maintenance.โ€

โ€œCome on, you think I donโ€™t know? Where else did you get that 150 thousand from?โ€ Jonathan sighed. โ€œGrandpa Gordon already caused you enough trouble. If thereโ€™s anything else I can help with, just let me know.โ€

Donald shook his head. โ€œI appreciate it, Jonathan, but this really isnโ€™t your problem.โ€

Jonathan paused for a couple of seconds and asked, โ€œHowโ€™s Jennifer doing now?โ€

Donald sighed. โ€œJenniferโ€™s been staying at home, not in the best mood. Donโ€™t worry, Jonathan, Iโ€™ll take good care of her.โ€

Jonathan wasnโ€™t worried about Jennifer. He was worried about Teresa and had no idea how she was holding up.

He explained to Donald, โ€œGrandpa Gordon lost it when he saw Jennifer wearing that bracelet. He kept insisting it was Grandmaโ€™s. I wanted to ask if you know where that bracelet came from.โ€
