Chapter 485

When they walked out of the mall, Cheryl muttered, โ€œTeresa, you canโ€™t treat me like this. Or Iโ€™ll tell Benny about Michael.โ€

Teresa heard her. โ€œReally? Threats again? Want me to drop you off on the side of the road?โ€

Cheryl shook her head dramatically, her braids swinging. โ€œI know you wonโ€™t dare.โ€

โ€œWanna see if I will?โ€ Teresa said, and actually stopped the car. Cheryl knew when to quit and quickly apologized.

They got home earlier than planned. On the way up, Cheryl swore Serena would still be asleep. But as soon as they walked in, they saw Michael gently patting Serenaโ€™s tummy, trying to soothe her. โ€œSleepy babyโ€ฆ go to sleepโ€ฆโ€

Cheryl smacked her forehead. She messed up.

โ€œMichael,โ€ Teresa called.

โ€œMommy!โ€ He looked up and ran over, smiling. โ€œYou and Auntie Cheryl are back!โ€

Teresa patted his head. โ€œI bought you some snacks.โ€

โ€œThanks, Mommy! The baby woke up, so I took care of her. I did good, right?โ€ asked Michael.

โ€œYou did amazing,โ€ Cheryl chimed in, pinching his cheek. โ€œSee, Teresa? I told you we could trust Michael.โ€

Teresa gave her a look. โ€œQuit grinning. Go check if Serenaโ€™s hungry.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Cheryl said and headed over.

Teresaโ€™s phone started ringing. When she saw who it was, her smile vanished. It was Donaldโ€™s number, but the voice that came through was Jenniferโ€™s. โ€œYou still havenโ€™t taken me off your block list, so I had to use Donaldโ€™s phone. I need to talk to you. Itโ€™s about my wedding.โ€

Teresa walked into a room, closed the door behind her, and answered, โ€œYou can talk to Evelyn about that.โ€

Jennifer said, โ€œItโ€™s about the house. Iโ€™m in Nareigh right now and I donโ€™t have a place to stay. Evelyn doesnโ€™t either. The only place left is your place at Rosary Estates.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re saying you want to leave for your wedding from my house?โ€ Teresa finally understood. She replied firmly, โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWhy not? I can have Michael stay in a hotel.โ€

โ€œWhy should my son stay in a hotel? Cheryl and Serena are staying with me, too. You want to use my house, and Iโ€™d have to rearrange everything for you. I donโ€™t have the time, and honestly, I donโ€™t want my house used for that.โ€

Jennifer paused for a few seconds, then her tone cooled. โ€œIโ€™m already at Rosary Estates. Letโ€™s talk in person.โ€

Teresa didnโ€™t say anything. As she rushed out, Cheryl called after her, โ€œTeresa, where are you going?โ€

Teresa didnโ€™t respond. She just asked Cheryl to look after the two kids.

Down in the garden, Jennifer parked her car. As soon as she saw Teresa, she started questioning her. โ€œWhy is Cheryl here again? And she brought her daughter, too?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s none of your business. Just stick to talking about the wedding,โ€ Teresa replied.

Jennifer dropped the Cheryl topic and got to the point. โ€œI really didnโ€™t want to bother you, but this is my wedding. It matters. Packing up is no big deal. Just stash Michaelโ€™s stuff somewhere. Nobody will notice.โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s just for show, then use a hotel. Or stay at your dorm at the hospital. Or pick any place and fix it up however you want. Do whatever you like,โ€ Teresa said, turning to leave.

Jennifer grabbed her wrist. โ€œSo thatโ€™s a no? Grandpa and Grandma gave you that house because they thought I was dead. If they knew I was alive, I think they wouldโ€™ve split it,โ€ she said.

Teresa was clearly annoyed and pulled her arm back. โ€œWhat are you trying to say?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to fight you over the house. Iโ€™m just really hurt. I was hoping I could be picked up for my wedding from Rosary Estates, like it was my home. But you wonโ€™t even allow that,โ€ Jennifer said, her voice cracking.

โ€œAll these years, I had no one. You had Grandpa and Grandma. They raised you, loved you. But I didnโ€™t have any of that. I had to depend on myself. You had a better life, but you never appreciated it,โ€ Jennifer continued.

Teresa clenched her fists tight. Something in Jenniferโ€™s words clearly hit a nerve. She shut her eyes for a second, then opened them and said coldly, โ€œFine. Just tell me how much you want. Iโ€™ll give it to you. Iโ€™m not going to your wedding. And after this, weโ€™re done.โ€

โ€œDone?โ€ Jennifer narrowed her eyes. โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œThen what did you mean?โ€ Teresa shot back.

Jennifer didnโ€™t know how to respond. Seeing the look in Teresaโ€™s eyes, full of anger and resentment, Jennifer took a deep breath and said, more calmly, โ€œIโ€™m just sad. You seem to have so many issues with me nowโ€ฆ so many misunderstandings.โ€

โ€œBefore we knew we were sisters, we got along really well. Youโ€™d drink and talk with me, and weโ€™d go shopping. Besides Miriam, you told me everything. But nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEver since we found out weโ€™re sisters, why did things have to get so ugly between us?โ€

โ€œWas it me who wanted to end up like this?โ€ Teresa asked her calmly. โ€œOr was it me who left you all alone these years? You keep using our grandparents to play the victim. Whatโ€™s the point? I donโ€™t owe you anything. Your bad luck isnโ€™t my fault. I donโ€™t have to carry your pain,โ€ Teresa said.

โ€œAs sisters, I thought I did enough, financially, help-wise, support-wise. But what about you? Every time I mess up even a little or donโ€™t do what you want, you start mocking me or playing the victim about how hard your life has been, telling me how tough things were for you.โ€

โ€œJennifer, itโ€™s not only you whoโ€™s had a tough time. Everyone has struggles.โ€

โ€œYou say youโ€™re helpless and suffering, but you didnโ€™t want to come back.โ€

Jennifer froze, staring at Teresa. Teresa stared right back, every word sharp as a knife.

โ€œYou had the chance to come back, but you were scared. Scared to face Evelyn and Philip fighting, scared of their yelling and pressure. So you didnโ€™t dare come back.โ€

โ€œYou said I was your only family, but you didnโ€™t care if I lived in their chaos. You ran off to hide in Genevieveโ€™s arms and live your new life.โ€

โ€œYou betrayed me long ago.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Jennifer shook her head, her face turning pale. โ€œDonโ€™t think like that of me. I never meant to ignore you. I always thought of you as my sister. I wanted us both to be happy.โ€

Teresa shook her head. โ€œFrom start to finish, you only ever thought about yourself and whether you could be happy.โ€ Teresa walked past Jennifer.

Suddenly, light rain started to fall.
