Chapter 434
Teresa struggled to sit up in bed, answered the phone, and took a sip of water to soothe her throat. โHey, youโre back?โ
โJust landed at the airport, Iโm coming over to see you now,โ Jonathan said.
โNo need to rush. Just come to Rosary Estates at eight,โ Teresa replied, rubbing her still-dizzy head. โIโm still at the office; I havenโt gone home yet.โ
โAlright.โ Jonathan paused for a couple of seconds. โWhatโs up with your voice? Did you catch a cold?โ
Teresa pressed a hand to her chest, took a breath, and said, โNo, probably just talked too much in meetings this afternoon. My throatโs a bit hoarse. Anyway, Iโve got things to handle here. Iโll hang up now.โ
She forced herself to eat a little and drink some water, then went to wash. Looking at her pale, exhausted reflection in the mirror, Teresa thought, โIf Jonathan saw me like this, heโd definitely start overthinking!โ
Propping herself up, she sat at her vanity, did her hair and makeup, and put on some lipstick to look less washed out. Her phone rang again, and Teresa picked up.
โIโm downstairs. Are you coming down, or should I come up?โ Jonathan asked.
Teresa glanced at the timeโit was only six-thirty. โDidnโt I tell you to come at eight?โ
โI went to your office to find you. The security guard said you didnโt show up today. Why did you lie to me?โ
Teresa hadnโt expected him to actually go to Teresouth Group. She finally said, โI wasnโt feeling well today, so I didnโt go in. I didnโt tell you because I didnโt want to bother you if you were busy.โ
โIโm not busy at all. I just want to know what it is you really want to say to me.โ Jonathan pressed.
Teresa was silent for a few seconds. โGive me five minutes. Iโll come down,โ she said at last. After all, there were still some of Michaelโs things at home.
โAlright.โ Jonathanโs Maybach was parked downstairs, its headlights gleaming in the night.
When Teresa walked over, Jonathan let out a sigh, opened the passenger door, and handed her a bag of medicine. As he did, his hand naturally rested on her foreheadโshe wasnโt running a fever.
โI got you some throat lozenges, and something for a fever. If you need anything else, just let me know.โ
โItโs just a minor cold. Iโm fine now,โ Teresa said, glancing up at him. She saw Jonathan staring intently and quickly looked away.
โDid you finish your work?โ Jonathan made a sound of acknowledgment, still watching her. โYou told me to come back today. Like Iโd dare not come back. So, what did you want to say to me?โ
โIโm sorry.โ
Those two words, so calm and quiet, made Jonathanโs heart sink. โYou called me back just to say that? What exactly are you apologizing for this time?โ
โBecauseโฆ I wanted to give you this.โ Teresa slowly took a jewelry box out of her pocket and handed it to him.
Jonathan opened it. His eyes flashed, then his brows furrowed in disbelief. He took out the ring and examined it closely. Then he got the truth. โThis is my wedding ring from when we got married. Didnโt you throw it into the river?โ
He still remembered that day. She had grabbed his hand and tossed his ring into the river. There was a splash, ripples spreading across the water as the ring sank.
The memory was still vivid. His initials were still engraved on the inside.
โWhen the tide went out, the ring washed right up to my feet. So I just picked it up,โ Teresa said.
Jonathan clenched the ring tightly and let out a cold laugh. โYou really think Iโll believe that?โ
