Chapter 434

Teresa struggled to sit up in bed, answered the phone, and took a sip of water to soothe her throat. โ€œHey, youโ€™re back?โ€

โ€œJust landed at the airport, Iโ€™m coming over to see you now,โ€ Jonathan said.

โ€œNo need to rush. Just come to Rosary Estates at eight,โ€ Teresa replied, rubbing her still-dizzy head. โ€œIโ€™m still at the office; I havenโ€™t gone home yet.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Jonathan paused for a couple of seconds. โ€œWhatโ€™s up with your voice? Did you catch a cold?โ€

Teresa pressed a hand to her chest, took a breath, and said, โ€œNo, probably just talked too much in meetings this afternoon. My throatโ€™s a bit hoarse. Anyway, Iโ€™ve got things to handle here. Iโ€™ll hang up now.โ€

She forced herself to eat a little and drink some water, then went to wash. Looking at her pale, exhausted reflection in the mirror, Teresa thought, โ€˜If Jonathan saw me like this, heโ€™d definitely start overthinking!โ€™

Propping herself up, she sat at her vanity, did her hair and makeup, and put on some lipstick to look less washed out. Her phone rang again, and Teresa picked up.

โ€œIโ€™m downstairs. Are you coming down, or should I come up?โ€ Jonathan asked.

Teresa glanced at the timeโ€”it was only six-thirty. โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you to come at eight?โ€

โ€œI went to your office to find you. The security guard said you didnโ€™t show up today. Why did you lie to me?โ€

Teresa hadnโ€™t expected him to actually go to Teresouth Group. She finally said, โ€œI wasnโ€™t feeling well today, so I didnโ€™t go in. I didnโ€™t tell you because I didnโ€™t want to bother you if you were busy.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not busy at all. I just want to know what it is you really want to say to me.โ€ Jonathan pressed.

Teresa was silent for a few seconds. โ€œGive me five minutes. Iโ€™ll come down,โ€ she said at last. After all, there were still some of Michaelโ€™s things at home.

โ€œAlright.โ€ Jonathanโ€™s Maybach was parked downstairs, its headlights gleaming in the night.

When Teresa walked over, Jonathan let out a sigh, opened the passenger door, and handed her a bag of medicine. As he did, his hand naturally rested on her foreheadโ€”she wasnโ€™t running a fever.

โ€œI got you some throat lozenges, and something for a fever. If you need anything else, just let me know.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just a minor cold. Iโ€™m fine now,โ€ Teresa said, glancing up at him. She saw Jonathan staring intently and quickly looked away.

โ€œDid you finish your work?โ€ Jonathan made a sound of acknowledgment, still watching her. โ€œYou told me to come back today. Like Iโ€™d dare not come back. So, what did you want to say to me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

Those two words, so calm and quiet, made Jonathanโ€™s heart sink. โ€œYou called me back just to say that? What exactly are you apologizing for this time?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆ I wanted to give you this.โ€ Teresa slowly took a jewelry box out of her pocket and handed it to him.

Jonathan opened it. His eyes flashed, then his brows furrowed in disbelief. He took out the ring and examined it closely. Then he got the truth. โ€œThis is my wedding ring from when we got married. Didnโ€™t you throw it into the river?โ€

He still remembered that day. She had grabbed his hand and tossed his ring into the river. There was a splash, ripples spreading across the water as the ring sank.

The memory was still vivid. His initials were still engraved on the inside.

โ€œWhen the tide went out, the ring washed right up to my feet. So I just picked it up,โ€ Teresa said.

Jonathan clenched the ring tightly and let out a cold laugh. โ€œYou really think Iโ€™ll believe that?โ€
