Listen to this chapter:

Teresa went quiet. She still owed Jonathan 3.2 million dollarsโ€”how could she just avoid contacting him?

โ€œHannah, just mind your own business and take care of yourself and your baby. Leave me alone,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œI know I shouldnโ€™t meddle so much, but Iโ€™m just trying to look out for you. All this nagging is because I care,โ€ Jennifer insisted.

โ€œAlright, alright, if thatโ€™s all, Iโ€™m hanging up,โ€ Teresa said, clearly tired of the conversation.

โ€œWait,โ€ Jennifer stopped her. โ€œYouโ€™re really not coming with me for the abortion?โ€

โ€œFigure it out yourself. If you want to get rid of it, just go on your own. Iโ€™m heading to Shaville for workโ€”Iโ€™m really busy.โ€

โ€œAnother business trip? What about Mike and Isabel? Are you taking them with you?โ€

โ€œEvelyn picked up Isabel, and I asked Miriam to look after Mike.โ€

โ€œWhy do you always ask Miriam for help? Iโ€™m off work these daysโ€”why not let me help?โ€

โ€œNo need. Mike doesnโ€™t like being with you; he prefers his godmother. And you should check in on Cheryl more. As the eldest sister-in-law, you should look after herโ€”sheโ€™s a new mom and doesnโ€™t have much experience.โ€

Jennifer muttered to herself, โ€œGuess Iโ€™ll just go get the abortion on my own when I have time.โ€

โ€œWhatever.โ€ Teresa hung up. It was obvious Jennifer only cared about her abortion and didnโ€™t care at all about how Cheryl was coping with the baby. If Teresa hadnโ€™t divorced Jonathan, it would make sense for her to worry about Cheryl. Anyway, sheโ€™d already given Cheryl over 200,000 dollars. She guessed it should be enough for Cheryl to get by for a couple of years.

The next morning, Teresa waited for Jonathan outside his villa. They were set to fly to Shaville. Jonathan showed up forty minutes late. He got in the car and explained, โ€œSorry, Werner and I had a meal together. It took longer than I thought.โ€

โ€œNo worries. Weโ€™ve still got plenty of time before the flight,โ€ Teresa replied.

Jonathan glanced at her, his look carrying a hint of something else. Teresa caught his gaze and raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhy are you looking at me like that? Is my makeup messed up?โ€

Jonathan shook his head, a faint smile on his lips. โ€œMy uncle was asking about why we got divorced. He wondered if it was because we couldnโ€™t have kids.โ€

Teresa tensed up instantly. โ€œSo? What did you tell him?โ€

Jonathan picked up a magazine and pretended to read. โ€œI said it wasnโ€™t my problem.โ€

โ€œYou!โ€ Teresa snatched the magazine from his hands. โ€œIf itโ€™s not you, then it must be me. So now your familyโ€™s going to think itโ€™s my fault?โ€

Jonathan grinned. โ€œWhy are you so worked up? I wasnโ€™t finished. I told him Iโ€™m always away on business, so we didnโ€™t want kids because I wouldnโ€™t have time to take care of them.โ€

Only then did Teresaโ€™s expression soften a little. Jonathan rubbed his forehead, his eyes lingering on Teresa with a hint of regret. โ€œLooking back now, do you realize how many chances you took away from me to have a child?โ€

โ€œHow did I ever take that away from you?โ€

โ€œHow many times did you take contraceptive pills?โ€

Teresa went silent. That stifling feeling of wanting to speak but not being able to tell the truthโ€”she felt it deeply right now. She had to bite down hard just to keep her real thoughts from slipping out.

She changed the subject. โ€œWeโ€™ve been divorced for ages, and your family still has the time to gossip about us? They must be really bored.โ€

โ€œMy uncle knows I havenโ€™t really moved on. He hopes weโ€™ll get back together. He means well.โ€

Teresa pressed her lips together and said nothing. Jonathan suddenly snapped his magazine shut and glanced at her stomach through the pale green dress she wore. โ€œIf the pregnancy is still early, is it possible that it wouldnโ€™t show up on a test?โ€
