Chapter 422

Donald paused for a couple of seconds. โ€œJonathan, we grew up togetherโ€”weโ€™re basically brothers. How could I ever lie to you?โ€

Jonathan smirked and tapped his cup against Donaldโ€™s. โ€œWe are brothers. No need for the โ€˜basicallyโ€™ part.โ€

โ€œMy language skills are nowhere near yours, Mr. Genius. If youโ€™re not busy tonight, let me treat you to dinner.โ€

โ€œNo need. Iโ€™ve already eaten,โ€ Jonathan replied.

Donald didnโ€™t stick around any longer.

After Donald left, Jonathan sat alone in his villa for a long time. He stared at Teresaโ€™s name on the medical report, his eyes growing deep. He was lost in thought when his phone suddenly rang. Seeing Teresaโ€™s name on the screen, he raised an eyebrow and answered slowly.

โ€œItโ€™s me. Do you have a minute? I want to see youโ€”just the two of us,โ€ Teresa said.

Jonathan paused for a moment and replied, โ€œCome find me at Forlisle Rose Estates.โ€

Teresa sat across from Jonathan. She spotted the medical report on the tableโ€”it had her name on it. Jonathan said, โ€œJennifer did the checkup, and Donald brought over the report. Since youโ€™re not pregnant, Iโ€™ll keep my promise. Iโ€™ll leave Nareigh and wonโ€™t bother you anymore.โ€

Teresa looked down, avoiding Jonathanโ€™s gaze. Her hands clenched tightly on her knees. โ€œIโ€™m here to apologize.โ€

Jonathan frowned, staring at her. โ€œWhat is it this time?โ€

Teresa said, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me you gave my mom $2.6 million? She never said a word until the money was gone.โ€

Jonathan pressed his lips into a thin line, silent.

Teresaโ€™s face turned serious. โ€œIโ€™m not here to blame you for giving her the money. Either way, Iโ€™ll pay you back.โ€

Jonathan noticed the tears welling up in her eyes and fought the urge to pull her close. โ€œForget it. You donโ€™t need to pay me back. Iโ€™m not hard up for cash.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not right. Whether it was starting the company or when I stayed at Everport, youโ€™ve helped me so much. I already owe you a lot. I have to pay you back the $2.6 million.โ€

Jonathan shot back, โ€œAnd where are you going to get the money? Didnโ€™t you give it all to Sanford?โ€

Teresa finally explained the misunderstanding. Her company had cash flow issues, and sheโ€™d planned to get a bank loan. But Sanford offered her money at a lower interest rate than the bank, so she agreed.

โ€œNever heard of โ€˜penny wise, pound foolishโ€™? Youโ€™re being naive,โ€ Jonathan said, a sharp edge to his voice.

Teresa explained, โ€œHe offered to lend me the money. Itโ€™s not like heโ€™d just run off.โ€

Jonathan let out a slow breath. โ€œMy $2.6 million, his $600,000โ€ฆ How long do you think itโ€™ll take you to pay back?โ€

Teresa gritted her teeth. โ€œIโ€™ll pay you back within three years. I promise.โ€

Jonathan saw the stubbornness in her eyes and looked away, rubbing his forehead. โ€œHow about I lend you $600,000? Pay Sanford back now, before he decides to jack up the interest and youโ€™re stuck.โ€

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t take your money.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m lending it to you. Better to owe one person than two, right?โ€

Teresa finally understood what Jonathan meantโ€”if she paid Sanford back, sheโ€™d only owe Jonathan. โ€œOkay, letโ€™s do it your way.โ€

Teresa took the $600,000 from Jonathan and immediately transferred it to Sanford, clearing her debt with him in one go.

Jonathan looked at her intently. โ€œFrom now on, you only owe me. If you ever run into trouble, come to me firstโ€”I donโ€™t like seeing you owe anyone else.โ€

Teresa was quiet for a few seconds. โ€œIโ€™ll write you an IOU. Come by my office tomorrow and weโ€™ll talk it over, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Jonathan replied.

Having said her piece, Teresa turned to leave.

Jonathan asked, โ€œHave you eaten? I havenโ€™t yet.โ€

โ€œI already have. Iโ€™ll head back now,โ€ Teresa said. She had driven here, so she could easily drive herself home.

The next day, Jonathan visited Teresouth Group to see Teresa. She came down to meet him personally, drawing the attention of all the employees. As soon as they stepped into the elevator, the receptionists began whispering.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on between Ms. Johnston and Mr. Lynn?โ€

โ€œDo you guys remember that time Ms. Johnston went on a business trip to Everport and didnโ€™t come back that night? I heard when Linda called her, it was Mr. Lynn who answered the phone.โ€

โ€œCould they be secretly dating?โ€

Teresa led Jonathan into her office and gestured for him to sit. โ€œI had our company lawyer draft a mortgage contract. Take a look,โ€ she said, handing it over.

Jonathanโ€™s brows knit together as he took the contract, and then his frown deepened. โ€œWhatโ€™s this? Youโ€™re putting Teresouth Group up as collateral?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve thought it through. If I canโ€™t pay you back within three years, then Teresouth Group will go to your company to settle the debt,โ€ Teresa replied.

Jonathan quickly did the math for herโ€”paying back $3.2 million in three years meant over a million a year. With Teresouth Groupโ€™s current annual revenue, Teresa would have to embezzle company funds to pull it off.

โ€œDonโ€™t underestimate me. If I tighten my belt and cut out unnecessary expenses, I can pay you back in three years. Worst case, Iโ€™ll just sell a few more bags, or even my car and house,โ€ Teresa insisted.

Jonathan took a sip of coffee. โ€œIโ€™ll pretend youโ€™re joking. Iโ€™m not such a jerk that Iโ€™d make my ex-wife sell her car and house and end up homeless,โ€ he said.

Teresa shrugged. โ€œA debtโ€™s a debt.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s gaze grew deep. โ€œWe were married, Teresa. You donโ€™t have to keep such strict accounts between us.โ€

But the truth was, it was Evelyn who squandered all that money, and Teresa just couldnโ€™t turn a blind eye.

Jonathan set down his cup. โ€œIf you work with me, Iโ€™ll help you make that $3.2 million back in a year,โ€ he offered.

Teresa cleared her throat. โ€œYou wanna keep me on a leash? Nah, forget it.โ€

Jonathan leaned back in his chair. โ€œI really do care about you, but you wonโ€™t remarry me. Now you think I want to keep you as my mistress?โ€

โ€œThen what are you getting at?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a business association in Shaville. If youโ€™re interested, I can take you. Thereโ€™ll be plenty of local and international investorsโ€”great for expanding your client base,โ€ Jonathan said.

On her own, Teresa didnโ€™t have the net worth to get into such a high-profile association. But with Jonathan by her side, sheโ€™d have no trouble getting in at all.

Teresa sighed helplessly. โ€œHow many favors am I going to end up owing you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just the rich helping out the not-so-richโ€”gotta work toward common prosperity, right?โ€

That made Teresa laugh.

Jonathan noticed Teresa seemed less stressed than yesterday and felt relieved. โ€œI should get going. Iโ€™ve got stuff to take care of at the office,โ€ he said, leaving the collateral contract on her desk.

Teresa offered to walk him out, and he didnโ€™t turn her down. She watched Jonathan get in his car and drive away. Only then did she return to her office. Glancing at the calendar, she noticed Michaelโ€™s birthday was approaching. Once again, she felt lostโ€”how could she ask Jonathan to spend the day with their son?
