Chapter 411
Jennifer replied, โNo one really bothered to say anything about you.โ
Cheryl sighed, biting her lip. โUgh, what am I supposed to do? My mom keeps saying she wants to come to Lonisburg to see me. Iโve already dodged her so many times, but Iโm running out of excuses.โ
โWhy not just be honest with her?โ Teresa asked.
Cheryl glanced at Teresa. โEasy for you to say. You havenโt told your family about your kid, either, and now you want me to come clean? Are you trying to get me in trouble?โ
Teresa frowned. โItโs not the same. At least I know who the dad is. You donโt even have that.โ
โIโm not saying anything. I just canโt. Iโm scared.โ Cheryl put her hand on her belly.
The light turned red. Teresa stopped the car and tapped the screen to zoom in on the GPS. They were still three miles away from the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Lonisburg, and this red light lasted a whole minute.
As the countdown ticked down, Cheryl suddenly cried out, โAh! My stomach hurts! It hurts so much! Am I about to give birth? Itโs killing me!โ
Teresa froze for a second, and Jennifer was momentarily stunned.
Jennifer said, โLooks like the babyโs coming early.โ
With only six seconds left before the light turned green, Teresa couldnโt wait any longer. She floored it, ran the red light, and sped up.
Jennifer scolded, โSlow down, Teresa!โ
Teresa said with a frown, โI canโt risk two lives here!โ
Cheryl clutched her belly, cold sweat streaming down her forehead. Her face scrunched up in pain. Jennifer turned around to comfort her, telling her to take deep breaths and relax, while Teresa kept her eyes glued to the road, not daring to waste a second.
โHannah, call 911! Tell them weโve got a woman in labor heading to the Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Weโll be there in three minutes. Have them bring a stretcher to the entrance. Iโll pull up right in front,โ Teresa instructed.
โOkay.โ Jennifer kept coaxing Cheryl while pulling out her phone to dial 911.
Cherylโs cries of pain filled the car. โJennifer, am I going toโฆ die today?โ
โShut up, Cheryl! Hang in there. Once you have the baby, Iโll give you a big present,โ Teresa assured her.
Jennifer shot Teresa a puzzled look. โWhat kind of present is she talking about?โ she wondered.
However, Teresa didnโt explain. With a screech, she pulled up the Porsche to the hospital entrance. A group of doctors quickly got Cheryl onto a stretcher and rushed her toward the elevators.
The red light above the operating room flicked on. Out in the hallway, Jennifer turned to Teresa and said, โDid you just run a red light? Check if you got a ticket and pay the fine before you forget.โ
Teresa stared at her, not understanding how she could be so cold. โHurry up and call Donald. Just tell him his sisterโs having the baby.โ
โWhy should I be the one to bear the brunt? You heard Cheryl in the car. Sheโs the one who didnโt want to say anything,โ Jennifer complained. โBut what if something goes wrong? Whoโs going to take responsibility then, huh?โ Teresa just couldnโt be as calm or sharp as Jennifer.
Sheโd had a baby herself, so she knew how risky childbirth could be. Especially now. Teresa was terrified Cheryl might have complications.
Jennifer said slowly, โCheryl is an adult. She should deal with the consequences of her own actions, not us.โ
โFine, whatever. If you donโt call, I will. I canโt handle this kind of responsibility,โ Teresa said.
Teresa pulled out her phone, but Jennifer snatched it away. Teresa snapped, โAre you crazy? Give me my phone back! Thatโs your fiancรฉโs little sister.โ
โSheโll be fine. If something happens, weโll deal with it then,โ Jennifer said calmly.
