Chapter 402
When Teresa got home, Isabel and Michael ran to greet her, and she embraced them in a big hug. Ever since Teresa returned from Strico, Isabel's attitude had noticeably improved. But occasionally, she would look at Teresa with sad eyes and ask, โIs my mom going to leave me? Will you leave me too, Teresa?โ
Teresa would reassure her, โYour momโs not going to leave you. And even if itโs just me, Iโll take good care of you.โ
The children munched on custard tarts, but Teresa seemed lost in thought. Her mind kept returning to Jenniferโs situation, leaving her feeling helpless. She didn't want to know Jennifer's secret, and hoped Jennifer wouldn't involve her in the ensuing mess.
After dinner, a call from Cathy startled Teresa. For a moment, she worried Cathy had discovered Jenniferโs pregnancy.
โHello?โ Teresa answered, her voice more cautious than usual.
โTeresa, youโre still up, right? I hope Iโm not bothering you,โ Cathy said.
โNo, Cathy. Itโs only ten. I donโt usually go to bed this early.โ Teresa locked her bedroom door; with Michael and Isabel asleep, she didn't have to worry about the children interrupting.
Cathy got to the point. โI just sent you some money on PayPal. Can you check if I got your account right?โ
Teresa, fresh from the shower, hadn't checked her phone. Opening PayPal, she saw Cathy had returned the 220 thousand dollars sheโd transferred earlier.
โCathy, whatโs this about?โ Teresa asked.
Cathy explained, โWell, Teresa, Werner and I talked it over, and we really canโt accept that money. You work hard for what you earn, and about the house, Donald was out of line. He should have told us before using the car money to help your sister buy a place. But whatโs done is done. Now that Donald and your sister are engaged, weโre all family. Werner and I think itโs best to just let it go.โ Cathy glanced at Werner beside her.
Werner nodded, having just opened a bottle of fine wine Jonathan had sent. He sipped it as they spoke.
โCathy, you and Werner really donโt need to worry. That money was just what my sister owed Donald, and I paid it back for her. Iโm doing fine. Teresouth Group pays me a good salary,โ Teresa reassured them.
โEven so, Teresa. Werner and I just think if you and Jonathan ever got back together, weโd still be one family. Thereโs no need to make things awkward between us, right?โ Cathy asked.
Teresa fell silent. After a long pause, she said, โJonathan and I arenโt getting back together.โ
โTeresa, Iโve always thought of myself as your family, so I hope you donโt mind me asking something personal. Iโm just being honest, so donโt take it the wrong way,โ Cathy said.
โGo ahead, Cathy,โ Teresa replied, unsure what was coming.
Cathy hesitated, sounding a little embarrassed. โWas it because you and Jonathan didnโt have kids?โ
Werner leaned in, gesturing for Cathy to put the call on speaker. He wanted to hear Teresaโs answer, too.
Teresa sighed inwardly. โCathy, Jonathan and I have been divorced for over three years. We just werenโt right for each other, and thatโs all.โ
โIf itโs just a matter of personality differences, you can always work through it. But if itโs about not having kidsโฆ Technology has come so far, and Jonathan is rich now. Donโt give up so easily,โ Cathy advised.
Teresa was bewildered. She didnโt understand why Cathy kept focusing on children.
She said, โThatโs not it at all, Cathy. It had nothing to do with having kids. We were both busy with our careers and just didnโt get around to it. Itโs not that we couldnโt have kids. Really, please donโt overthink it.โ
